Retro City Rampage for Vita looks like this

Retro City Rampage for Vita looks like this

We may not have any idea when to expect Retro City Rampage on the Vita (and various other platforms), but we’re starting to see what it’ll look like once it’s finally done.

Potential rampagers need not worry about the Vita’s smaller screen size, according to developer Brian Provinciano, as the portable version has been outfitted with two different scaling options; one that scales the game to ensure everything is clearly visible, and another that maintains the console version’s original 16:9 aspect ration and stylized borders.

Touchscreen functionality has also been “tastefully” implemented, but only so far as to aid in navigating menus and during shopping sprees. “If you’re an absolute purist,” Provinciano adds, “you can still play the game 100% with the buttons.” The Vita version also supports “continuous play” with the PS3 version, meaning that saves transfer between the two platforms and both versions share the same universal scoreboard.

Additionally, the Vita and PS3 ports will come packed with visual filters that make the game look like various systems of yore, such as the all-red “Virtual Burn” and monochrome “Brick Handheld” settings.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time snatches a spot on Vita

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time snatches a spot on Vita

Having made a lifelong profession out of pocketing items of high value, Sly Cooper should feel right at home on the PlayStation Vita. Sony and developer Sanzaru Games, which updated and packaged Sly’s PS2 adventures in an HD trilogy collection, have announced that Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will also launch on Vita, day-and-date with the PlayStation 3 version.

In addition to being portable and cross-save compatible with the PS3 version, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will offer a few augmentations specific to the Vita hardware. When Sly dons an archer’s outfit, for instance, his arrows can be steered into their targets – and connect Sly to those areas via a rope bridge – by tilting the Vita. (Sixaxis? What’s that?)

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is due on both PS3 and Vita sometime in Fall 2012. When questioned, a Sanzaru representative told Joystiq that it had not yet been decided whether purchasing one version would grant you complimentary access to the other.

Konami confirms June 12 launch date for Metal Gear Solid HD on Vita

Konami confirms June 12 launch date for Metal Gear Solid HD on Vita

The retailers were right. Konami has finally officially announced a June 12 North American launch date for Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on the PlayStation Vita and it’s unsurprisingly June 12 in North America. The Vita port includes new control options, utilizing the touch-screen and rear touchpad, allowing players to “zoom in on captivating cut-scenes, peek around corners, interrogate enemies, cycle through weapons, and perform rapid attacks with their knife.”

In addition to the new control options, the PS Vita version of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection can use Transfarring to sync save files with the PS3 game. Of course to use this feature you need to own Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on both the PS3 and PS Vita.

Report: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit devs working on Vita title

Report: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit devs working on Vita title

Image

UK studio Criterion Games is apparently prepping a project for release on the PlayStation Vita. Superannuation spotted a job listing for a software engineer that at one point reportedly listed “optimising and tuning the game resource system for the PS Vita” as part of the position’s overview. The listing was seemingly altered since, as it now reads, “Optimizing and tuning the game resource system for other platforms.”

Aside from the bite-sized Burnout Crash launched on XBLA last year, Criterion Games has been rather quiet for the past couple years. The team’s last console release was the fantastic Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit in 2010, and many expect that the next Need for Speed entry will be handled once again by Criterion. We’ve yet to hear a peep from the studio in 2012, but E3 isn’t too far away.

We contacted Criterion’s parent company, EA, for comment.

There’s a new Vita brain training game for you, ‘Smart As’

There’s a new Vita brain training game for you, ‘Smart As’

Image

Sony is boldly experimenting with the idea of a brain training game on a handheld. “Smart As,” coming to Vita this fall, is a “social brain training experience” that calculates players’ Brain Power through daily exercises based on 20 different puzzle games – and then encourages them to compete with their friends with online leaderboards and Facebook integration.

The 20 brain games fall into the categories of “Logic, Arithmetic, Language, and Observation,” and use all of the Vita’s input methods, including cameras, AR, and both touchscreens. Regional challenges will give you more to do based on where you are when you play it.

What part of the brain makes you able to understand Near? Because we don’t have that.

Cave Vita games reportedly canceled as COO resigns

Cave Vita games reportedly canceled as COO resigns

ImageMikio Watanabe, Cave’s executive vice president and COO, is leaving the company as of May 31 for personal reasons, according to a press release issued by the company today. Watanabe will continue as representative director until the next shareholder meeting in August. Following his departure, CEO Ito Masahito will become the only remaining representative director.

At the same time, the latest Famitsu magazine (reported by Andriasang) lists two Vita games by the publisher as canceled. One of the games is a Vita release of its casual/social castle building game Shirotsuku; the other is an unspecified shooter.

If you’re feeling worried about the seemingly vulnerable company, now might be a good time to remind you that Akai Katana Shin, the company’s latest Xbox 360 shooter, is out in North America this week.

I Am Alive tops April 2012 PSN downloads; Escape Plan still atop PS Vita list

I Am Alive tops April 2012 PSN downloads; Escape Plan still atop PS Vita list

The full PlayStation downloads list for April – as opposed to the sneak peek we got thanks to Pulse earlier this month, where the list is not segregated by platform – has been released and Ubisoft’s I Am Alive was indeed the top download. On the PS3 and PSN list, thatgamecompany’s Journey followed Ubisoft’s long-awaited title. Reverge Labs’ debut Skullgirls managed to snag the third spot.

On the PS Vita side, Escape Plan continued to dominate – no surprise since there’s not much else for the PS Vita right now, though that changes today. Modern Warfare 3‘s Content Collection #1 drop on PSN also did well, topping out the PS3 add-on category. Finally, Final Fantasy VII was the top PSOne Classic, but then again you already knew that because it’s always Final Fantasy VII.

Finally, you can play Cho Aniki Zero on your Vita (finally!)

Finally, you can play Cho Aniki Zero on your Vita (finally!)

Grandma sure did like playing Rainbow Six: Vegas on that old PSP when you’d make your weekly homage for family dinner, didn’t she? “Blap! Blap! Blap!” she’d shout. And things really haven’t been the same since you traded up to a Vita, what with its lack of support for many PSP titles. We understand.

Thankfully, so does Sony. This morning, the US PlayStation blog announced today’s launch of several PSP games on the Vita (including Grandma’s fave), as well as a variety of PSP Minis (full list after the break). As usual, if you already own the games digitally for your PSP, all you’ll have to do is re-download the files to your PSN-tied Vita. If not, well, you’ll have to pony up some virtual cash.

Interestingly, Sony also mentioned “improved playability” for some titles beyond the up-res’d graphics – we’re checking to see what exactly that means. The line has since been removed from Sony’s blog post.

LittleBigPlanet Vita beta now accepting applications

LittleBigPlanet Vita beta now accepting applications

Image

The beta for LittleBigPlanet on Vita is gearing up, and Sony is inviting interested players to enroll in the test run right here. Sony promises “many of you” willl have the opportunity to participate in the beta. The enrollment form consists of simple questions, such as “Which LittleBigPlanet games have you played before?” and asks if you’ve created levels in any of the LittleBigPlanet titles.

It also asks, “Do you own a PS Vita?” For those looking to get in the Vita beta, we think that may be the only question with a wrong answer.

I Am Alive tops April PSN downloads, just one Vita game charts

Ubisoft’s post-apocalypse third-person-survivor I Am Alive apparently struck a chord with PlayStation 3 owners last month, topping the PlayStation Network’s download charts for April 2012, even edging out March’s big PSN release, Journey.

The Walking Dead’s game adaptation from Telltale managed more than a shambling start as well, taking up two spots on the top 10 with the season pass and first episode in third and fifth place, respectively. Just one Vita title landed on the list, Escape Plan, in the number 10 spot. All of this information – and more! – can be found in the latest PlayStation “Pulse” video, which we’ve dropped just below the break.
