NHK successfully transmits Super Hi-Vision 8K video over terrestrial TV signals

NHK successfully transmits Super Hi-Vision 8K video over terrestrial TV signals

panasonic nhk 8k 145

Japanese broadcaster NHK has managed to transmit an 8K video over a regular UHF TV broadcast, a feat it’s calling a world first. The transmission was sent over a distance of 4.2km (about 2.6 miles) across Tokyo, and employed multiple-channel transmission (NHK refers to it as MIMO, like modern Wi-Fi networks) to cram all the information into the stream. While terrestrial broadasts of HDTV signals are in use around the world, this is a first for UHDTV (Super Hi-Vision is an NHK brand) — with a resolution of 7680 x 4320, the picture is 16 times more detailed than regular HD signals.

There’s no word from NHK on when it hopes to bring this tech into widespread use, but it’s another milestone in bringing Super Hi-Vision to the general public…

A match made in heaven: BlackBerry PlayBook and… Windows Phone? [video]

A match made in heaven: BlackBerry PlayBook and… Windows Phone? [video]

BlackBerry PlayBook Running Windows Phone

What do you get when you cross a struggling vendor’s debut tablet with a mobile operating system that has spent the past 18 months running into the brick wall that is Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iOS? One Dutch developer seemingly needed to find out, so he ported Microsoft’s perpetually-emerging Windows Phone OS onto RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook. The result is a somewhat responsive slate that gives us a look at what will never be; Microsoft is on record in stating that it has no interest in bringing Windows Phone — emphasis on “Phone” — to tablets. Of course, with the software giant’s next-generation Windows 8 platform on the horizon there is no reason to put Windows Phone on a tablet. But for those curious to know what a Windows Phone tablet might look like, a video of the developer’s PlayBook running Microsoft’s mobile OS follows below. “Gamer109X,” the developer behind this curious chimera, said he plans to release a Windows Phone build for the PlayBook to the public in the coming months.

Sony NEX-F3 preview: entry-level APS-C shooter adds pop-up flash, comfy grip, and 1080p video for $599.99

Gallery Photo: Sony NEX-F3 hands-on pictures

Last month, we heard that Sony had a redesigned entry-level NEX camera on the way, and the leak was spot-on: today, the company’s introducing the NEX-F3, a $ 599.99 interchangable lens shooter with a 16.1 megapixel APS-C sensor, the pop-up flash previously only available on the pricy NEX-7, a brand-new 180-degree tilting LCD screen for self-portraits, 1080p24 video recording, and plenty of internal upgrades. In other words, it’s a feature-packed replacement for the NEX-C3, which Sony is phasing out immediately.

We spent an afternoon shooting with the camera, and we discovered it’s actually far more akin to the excellent NEX-5N than its forebear, right down to the power switch and sizable new grip. It doesn’t come with an external…

BBC’s live Olympics video stream will include pause, rewind, alerts, and Twitter integration

Photo

The BBC unveiled its new online video platform in London yesterday, giving us a first glimpse at how it plans to live stream every event from the Summer Olympics. The new browser-based player will offer pause and rewind options, along with live participant information (such as leaderboards and results) and clickable alerts that can take you to other streams when key moments are happening elsewhere. There’ll also be integrated data-driven profiles of the competing athletes that will pull in their Twitter feed alongside public reactions. Anyone that’s ever used BBC’s iPlayer will know it’s not the highest quality stream, and thankfully the broadcaster has taken note; the new player will now stream at up to 3.5Mbps, up from iPlayer’s…

Sharp Aquos Phone SL hands-on video

Sharp Aquos Phone SL hands-on video

aquos phone sl

Japan has a lot of mobile users that aren’t quite ready to make the move up to a smartphone — many see the touch controls as intimidating or difficult to use. As such, there’s still a market for certain form factors that are all-but-dead in other parts of the world. Sharp has capitalized on this before with its Aquos Phone The Hybrid series of Android clamshells and sliders on SoftBank, and it’s unveiled a similar product today as part of KDDI / au’s summer 2012 lineup.

The Aquos Phone SL IS15SH is a portrait-orientation slider with a 3.7-inch qHD LCD screen, a 1.4GHz Snapdragon S2 processor, and an 8-megapixel camera, along with standard issue Japanese features like water and dust resistance, infrared, and 1seg TV. It’s 14.9mm thick…

Sharp Aquos Phone Serie hands-on (video)

Sharp Aquos Phone Serie hands-on (video)

aquos phone serie

When we reviewed the Sharp Aquos Phone 104SH, we were struck by its Western feature set, sleek hardware, and attractively minimal Android 4.0 skin. The Aquos Phone Serie, announced at today’s KDDI / au summer lineup launch event, could not be further away from those ideals — it’s a hefty device with an array of Japan-specific features and “Feel_UX,” one of the most radical Ice Cream Sandwich skins we’ve ever seen.

Feel_UX basically does away with the traditional home screen in favor of a permanent app drawer. There aren’t any capacitive buttons, and no onscreen home button either until you actually jump into an app — pressing Home will then simply return you to the apps tray. Swiping left will bring you to a single scrolling page of…

Analyst fears video game industry may hit six-year low

Analyst fears video game industry may hit six-year low

Video Game Sales Slide In 2012

NPD Group last week announced that video games sales for the month of April were down 26% and software sales plummeted from $ 630.4 million to $ 307.2 million, representing a 42% decline from April 2011. The numbers shocked industry analysts, who predicted a maximum software decline of 27%. The only segment of the gaming industry that did not suffer was the accessories segment, which grew a mere 0.5% from $ 147.8 million last year to $ 148.6 million this year. According Gamasutra analyst Matt Matthews, “should the contraction from 2011 continue at this pace, annual U.S. retail video game revenue in 2012 could fall below the $ 12.6 billion figure from 2006,” representing a six-year low since the first full year of Xbox 360 sales and the launch year for both the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3.

Android applications can run on Samsung-backed Tizen OS [video]

Tizen OS Runs Android Apps

Tizen, the mobile operating system being developed by Samsung and Intel, can support programs written with Samsung’s Bada SDK as well as Android applications, The Handheld Blog reported. The operating system supports a program called Application Compatibility Layer (ACL), which is similar to Research in Motion’s Android player for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Open Mobile, the company behind ACL, claims Android apps will be able to run on a Tizen-powered device with 100% compatibility and feature the same responsiveness users would expect on a native Android device. The company hopes that the program will be integrated into smartphones and tablets by vendors and not end users. A video demonstration of Android apps running on a Tizen tablet follows below.
