KickStarter projects looks to transform Android tablets from boring to gorgeous [video]

Chameleon Android Tablets

Google has focused a great deal of effort over the years on making its Android operating system more attractive. Android partners’ first attempts at tablets were lackluster to say the least, and while Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich have revamped the user interface, they still leave much to be desired for many users. Luckily, Android users have the option of completely customizing their devices with various home screen replacement apps, and a nearly endless number of custom ROMs. These alternatives cannot compete with Chameleon, however, an Android home screen replacement app like no other.

Chameleon replaces the standard Android home screens and app launcher with a custom layout of widgets and apps that deliver users a wide range of information. The software can change its appearance and functionality based on GPS locations, Wi-Fi network connections and time zones, along with Home, Office and Evening modes, that will automatically adjust to a user’s needs. Chameleon will also include numerous widgets based on popular apps and services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Nextflix, Instagram, Google Drive, Gmail, Clock, Calendar, Weather, Media Player and an RSS Reader.

Chameleon requires a tablet to be running Android 3.2 Honeycomb or newer, with a 10.1-inch display and a 1280 x 800 resolution or higher. Early adopters can pre-order the app through KickStarter for as little as $ 5 and will receive Chameleon in August, prior to its September release on the Google Play Store. A video demonstration follows below.

Viewdini: hands-on with Verizon’s new mobile video aggregation app

Viewdini: hands-on with Verizon’s new mobile video aggregation app

Gallery Photo: Viewdini hands-on photos

Verizon’s showing off Viewdini, its new video aggregation app, down on the floor of the 2012 Cable Show, and the company just gave us few minutes to put it through its paces. The key thing to note about the app is that it’s purely meant for helping users find video content across a number of services — there’s no player component to Viewdini. When you search for a movie or TV show, Viewdini kicks back a list of every partner source with your desired content. For example, if your search is available on Netflix and Xfinity, for example, you can choose your desired source, the partner app opens (e.g. the standard Netflix app), and your movie begins. If you’re not currently subscribed to the services presented, Viewdini will bring you…

Verizon CEO Dan Mead announces Viewdini, a video aggregation app with Comcast Xfinity as its first partner

Cable Show panel

At the 2012 Cable Show in Boston, Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead (seated second from right) just announced that the carrier will be launching a new mobile video platform called Viewdini, an announcement Mead calls “one of our most important of the year.” Viewdini was described as “a mobile video portal for aggregation and delivery of mobile content,” with Comcast’s Xfinity announced as the first video partner for the new service. Mead said that Verizon’s been working on the service for several years as a response to the consumer desire to “absorb any video on any device that they have any time they want” and noted that Verizon’s LTE network helped make this platform a reality.

The long-term goal is for Viewdini to allow users to search…

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon comes to Facebook [video]

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon comes to Facebook [video]

Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Facebook

Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site, is filled with a large selection of social and casual games, such as Draw Something, Words With Friends and FarmVille. While the topic of Facebook gaming is widely discussed, there isn’t much there in the way of titles that would attract the hardcore gaming crowd. Ubisoft is looking to change that, however, with the release of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Commander. The game, unlike its console counterpart, is not a first-person shooter but instead a 2D game with an overhead viewpoint that contains both social and more complex aspects. Players are given the option to invite and team up with their Facebook friends to form alliances and complete a variety of missions. The Facebook game is also integrated with “Ghost Recon Future Soldier” on consoles, allowing players to unlock characters, experience points and currency that can be used in both games. Ghost Recon Commander is available now on Facebook, and Ubisoft’s trailer follows below.

Unofficial concept video demonstrates some cool new ideas for Google Calendar, Contacts, and Maps

Unofficial concept video demonstrates some cool new ideas for Google Calendar, Contacts, and Maps

Russian Google unofficial concept video

Last year’s rollout of a refreshed UI across Google’s essential suite of web apps proved that the company isn’t afraid to experiment with design. Now, a group of Russian designers have offered up a video containing some additional changes they’d like to see at some point in the future. Titled “Google New Features,” at first glance the YouTube clip almost looks like it came directly from the folks in Mountain View, focusing on usability upgrades to Calendar, Maps, and Contacts. Sadly, the maligned Google Reader layout doesn’t seem to be on the design firm’s radar.

The concept video teases some intriguing updates to Calendar, including the ability to create events spanning multiple days from the default view, and a feature that auto…

Watch this: one-time 1983 special ‘Battle of the Video Games’

Battle of the Video Games THE AWL

The arcade as we know it may not exist anymore in the US, but there was a time when they were big enough to garner their own TV shows. The Awl has dug up the intro to “Battle of the Video Games,” a spectacular taste of the culture of 1983 — that’s nearly thirty years ago if you’ve conveniently let that slip from your mind. The one-time special features Heather Locklear, Happy Days‘ Anson Williams, Lou Ferrigno, Scott Baio, and other ’80s — erm — stars. The contest pits the celebrities, split into two teams, against each other in three rounds: Ms. Pac-Man, BugerTime, and Frogger. Unfortunately it appears that only the introduction to the show has survived to make it onto YouTube, but it’s certainly worth a watch to see the gameplay…

Newcastle University neuroscientists use video game for stroke rehab

Newcastle University neuroscientists use video game for stroke rehab

Image

Video games aren’t neuroscience, unless they’re helping stroke victims recover physical function in a scientific, medical capacity: then they’re totally neuroscience. The above video shows off Circus Challenge, an action game from Newcastle University and Limbs Alive Ltd designed to help stroke patients regain motor control of their weakened hands and arms.

Circus Challenge uses “next-gen” motion controllers – not the Wii, as other rehab systems have – to have patients fling pies at clowns, juggle, dive and perform other Big Top-inspired feats, with the difficulty progressing as motor skills improve. Newcastle received £1.5 million from the Health Innovation Challenge Fund for its project, and hopes to use the funds to provide remotely monitored, at-home therapy for stroke patients.

Aside from all the philanthropy and innovation in the Circus Challenge project, we think the game design is pretty pretty as well. Check it out for yourself up top.

Preserving video games in the digital age

Preserving video games in the digital age

Flickr Super Nintendo

Digital preservation is an issue for just about every medium — from film and literature to the web itself — and video games are no different. And when it comes to keeping the Super Nintendo alive, Byuu is one of the most prominent figures thanks to his bnes emulator, which attempts to emulate Nintendo’s 16-bit console as accurately as possible. This March, after years of work, the project finally managed to accurately emulate each and every SNES coprocessor — leading to an emulator that could play every officially released game. He’s even gone a step further with the SNES Preservation Project, in which he has spent more than $ 10,000 to gather every Super Nintendo game released in North America. The collection is complete, and he’s…

Watch this: ‘Community’ video game finale is a dazzling retro adventure

Watch this: ‘Community’ video game finale is a dazzling retro adventure

Community

Fans of NBC’s Community are no stranger to bizarre and unexpected twists, since the show’s creator has often taken dramatic license with its format from episode to episode. And Thursday’s finale, set in a beautifully conceived video game world, is probably one of the most unique and exciting primetime episodes of television we’ve seen in some time. The episode tracks the Greendale Community College’s infamous study group as it travels through a rougelike retro gameworld in pursuit of the character Pierce’s (Chevy Chase) inheritance. While the game itself is obviously a far-fetched creation, it’s a joy to watch the characters figure out how to grapple with its challenges as they face off against a devious archenemy played by the…
