New Verizon, Redbox joint venture to offer Netflix-like video streaming

Verizon and Redbox-owner Coinstar on Monday announced a new joint venture in which the two companies will offer a new streaming video service. The joint venture was originally called “Project Zoetrope” and initial details began to surface in December of last year. It’s still unclear what the joint venture will be called or what exactly each company’s role will be, however Verizon said that the companies will begin to offer a “video on demand streaming and download service” that will no doubt compete directly with services such as Netflix and Vudu. Verizon’s press release follows below. Verizon and Coinstar’s Redbox Form Joint Venture to Create New Consumer Choice for Video Entertainment Joint Venture Will Offer the Best of Both Worlds

Natural Selection 2 demonstrates Darwin’s theory in new video

Natural Selection 2 demonstrates Darwin’s theory in new video

With the advent of antibiotics, platinum credit cards and thermal underwear, the purist’s notion of natural selection remains a long-forgotten, useless ideal — at least until the aliens attack. Sequel to a 2002 Half-Life mod, Natural Selection 2 will act as a survival-of-the-fittest simulation for both sides: Players will inhabit the bodies of aliens and Marines to see which traits will be passed on to the following generations. We’re guessing large teeth and precise trigger fingers will make the cut, but not necessarily on the same species.

Natural Selection 2 is set to launch this summer, but those who pre-order will get early access via the beta on Steam.

Google wants people to ‘Solve for X’ with new conference [video]

Google wants people to ‘Solve for X’ with new conference [video]

Google unveiled its new “Solve for X” website early Monday morning, and it looks as if the Mountain View-based company is planning a TED-like think tank to encourage problem solving and teamwork. “Solve for X is a place where the curious can go to hear and discuss radical technology ideas for solving global problems,” reads the Solve for X website. “Radical in the sense that the solutions could help billions of people. Radical in the sense that the audaciousness of the proposals makes them sound like science fiction. And radical in the sense that there is some real technology breakthrough on the horizon to give us all hope that these ideas could really be brought to life.” One of Google X’s chief scientists, Richard DeVaul,

PlayStation Vita’s Feb. 8 update adds video capture, OS X support, GPS tracking

PlayStation Vita’s Feb. 8 update adds video capture, OS X support, GPS tracking

PlayStation Vita firmware version 1.60 is set to drop on February 8 (as least in Japan), and it’ll bring several major features when it arrives. Among those features are standards like GPS tracking via a newly added Maps application, the ability to capture video, and the release of a support application for Mac OS X. It can also now serve mixed vanilla/chocolate froyo swirl. Finally!

Additionally, the update will banish mentions of the the phrase “PlayStation Network” from various services and replace it with the newly renamed “Sony Entertainment Network” branding. Considering that the PSP is still supported by Sony but has yet to receive any form of Mac support for content management, we’re gonna go ahead and call this a big step forward.

Shank 2 video schools us all on survival

In Shank 2‘s Survival mode, you may think staying alive is simply slicing and/or shooting dudes before they slice and/or shoot you. Turns out, it’s not that simple.

Video review: Mad Catz Arcade FightStick Soul Edition

Video review: Mad Catz Arcade FightStick Soul Edition

A few weeks ago, Mad Catz sent me one of its latest arcade sticks, the SoulCalibur 5 branded Soul Edition arcade fightstick. After daily testing on SC5, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Mortal Kombat, the Soul Edition not only met my expectations, but exceeded them, as you can tell from the review video above.

The company’s Tournament Edition sticks have always been excellent pieces of hardware, and the Soul Edition is no exception. It’s solidly constructed from arcade-quality parts and is heavy enough to stay in place, regardless of whether you fight on a table-top or your lap. The stick’s striking motif and subtle design elements set it apart from every other mass-produced arcade stick on the market; if you want to stand out at your local Ranking Battles without incurring the cost of a custom-made stick, you’d be hard pressed to find a piece of fighting tech that’s this unique, right out of the box.

Skyrim takes top honors at NY Video Game Critics Circle Awards

Skyrim takes top honors at NY Video Game Critics Circle Awards

You’d have to be a fus-ro-dummy to think that Skyrim would be through with receiving accolades. At last night’s New York Video Game Critics Circle Awards, the Bethesda Game Studios-developed RPG took home yet one more, earning the “Big Apple Award for Best Game” as decided by a cabal of NY-based game journos from various outlets.

Other winners include two apiece for Bastion and Portal 2, portable love for Super Mario 3D Land and Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP, and explosive nods to both Crysis 2 and Saints Row: The Third. Harold Goldberg’s “All Your Base Are Belong To Us” took home the “Algonquin Roundtable Award for Best Book” and Sony’s “Michael” commercial won the “Mad Men Award,” mysteriously beating out Robin Williams’ luxurious beard. Frankly, we were baffled. The full list of winners can be found below the break.

Lawmaker launches assault on violent video games

Lawmaker launches assault on violent video games

An Oklahoma lawmaker has proposed levying a new tax on violent video games. Oklahoma Democrat Will Fourkiller has suggested the tax be applied to all games that receive an ESRB rating, which is intended for adults only. In addition, Fourkiller thinks T-Rated games should also have a tax added to the cost of the games, since some include “simulated gambling.” But a tax on all T-Rated games would be too broad, Ars Technica points out, as there are also titles that are rated T for “cartoon violence, crude humor and suggestive themes.” Read on for more. During his effort to gain backing for the proposed tax, Rep. Fourkiller refers to a crime in which a man killed a police officer and stole his car

Avid releases video editing app for the iPad

Avid releases video editing app for the iPad

Apple’s iMovie mobile application has new competition when it comes to mobile video editing. Long-time digital video editing software vendor Avid has released its Avid Studio mobile video editing app for the iPad. The app is currently available in the App Store for an introductory price of $ 4.99 and will increase to $ 8 after 30 days. Avid Studio for the iPad is the company’s first video editing program for any of Apple’s platforms; Avid had previously only built Windows software. Avid Studio looks to provide most of the features offered through the desktop version, going above and beyond what iMovie is capable of in many cases. The app comes only two days after Apple released a big update for Final Cut Pro X for
