Verizon says global capabilities coming to select Android handsets this summer

Verizon Wireless on Monday confirmed that the DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX, HTC Rezound, and DROID 4 will receive global roaming capabilities later this summer, enabling the handsets to access voice and data services in more than 200 countries, Droid-Life reported. “Customers will see a notification on their device when the software update is available for their device,” a Verizon spokesperson said. “After the software update, customers will be able to take their smartphone overseas and use voice service in more than 220 countries and receive data in more than 205 countries.” While the carrier didn’t give a specific timeline, there is a possibility the update may be included with the smartphone’s upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich updates, which are also slated for a summer release.

Verizon CEO Dan Mead announces Viewdini, a video aggregation app with Comcast Xfinity as its first partner

At the 2012 Cable Show in Boston, Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead (seated second from right) just announced that the carrier will be launching a new mobile video platform called Viewdini, an announcement Mead calls “one of our most important of the year.” Viewdini was described as “a mobile video portal for aggregation and delivery of mobile content,” with Comcast’s Xfinity announced as the first video partner for the new service. Mead said that Verizon’s been working on the service for several years as a response to the consumer desire to “absorb any video on any device that they have any time they want” and noted that Verizon’s LTE network helped make this platform a reality.

Verizon preparing to raise FiOS broadband speeds and prices?

If it’s available in your area, there’s no disputing that Verizon’s FiOS is one of the fastest broadband services available — and it may be getting even faster, for a price. According to DSL Reports, Big Red is planning on upping the speeds on two of the four FiOS tiers, bumping the 25 Mbps offering to 50 Mbps downstream and 25 Mbps upstream, while the 35 Mbps service would take a leap all the way to 75 Mbps downstream. There’s no specific plans mentioned to alter the 15 / 5 Mbps service nor the 150 / 35 Mbps high-end option, but the company is said to also be considering a 300 Mbps tier for some markets. According to DSL Reports the service changes could arrive as soon as June 18th, but of course nothing’s official until we hear it…

Verizon reportedly prepping global roaming feature for HTC Rezound

In January Verizon revealed that it would be activating global roaming functionality in the Motorola Droid 4 and LG Spectrum, but it appears the HTC Rezound may also be on deck. Droid Life has a photo of a purported Verizon store product display tag, which specifically calls out the global feature — allowing the phone to be used in 185 additional countries — as “coming soon.” We first heard rumors about the inclusion of GSM radios within the Rezound from some individuals at xda-developers, who discovered a “global mode” earlier this year; the phone is used as a CDMA and LTE device on Verizon’s network.
