TiVo Premiere Elite DVR gets a name change, now the Premiere XL4

TiVo Premiere XL4 (ZATZ NOT FUNNY)

TiVo introduced the Premiere Elite quad-tuner DVR last September, and now the company’s flagship box is getting a name refresh. Zatz Not Funny reports that the $ 399.99 device will now be known as the Premiere XL4, placing it atop both the standard Premiere and the Premiere XL models. On the hardware front things will remain the same, with the newly-minted XL4 providing 300 hours of HD recording to go along with its four tuners. Unfortunately, the device still only works with digital cable and FiOS subscribers; the other two Premiere models can work with over-the-air antennas as well. Then again, if you’re splurging on TiVo’s high-end device, you probably left over-the-air signals behind quite some time ago. While the names haven’t yet…

Comcast Xfinity On Demand rolling out to TiVo Premiere subscribers in SF Bay Area

Comcast Xfinity On Demand rolling out to TiVo Premiere subscribers in SF Bay Area

tivo comcast xfinity

As expected, Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand service is now rolling out to TiVo Premiere subscribers. Existing Comcast and TiVo Premiere customers in the San Francisco Bay Area will have the update pushed to their DVRs over the next few weeks, and TiVo says that the service will come to other US markets “in the coming months.” It’s the first time Comcast has made Xfinity available to TiVo users, though you shouldn’t take this as another reason to cut the cable — you’ll still have to maintain a Comcast subscription to access the on-demand content. If you’re outside California entirely, you can sign up for notifications at TiVo’s site to receive information on when the service will become available elsewhere.

TiVo tweaks pricing on Premiere lineup, updates Premiere model with 500GB storage

TiVo tweaks pricing on Premiere lineup, updates Premiere model with 500GB storage

TiVo Premiere STB

TiVo is tweaking its product lineup this Sunday, replacing the current TiVo Premiere 320GB model with a 500GB hard drive, which the company says will be good for up to 75 hours of HD content. Along with that refresh is coming a new pricing scheme. The price for the TiVo Premiere will be $ 149.99, which is $ 50 more expensive. However, the monthly service fee will drop to $ 14.99 with a one-year contract — though obviously current customer will be sticking at their current levels. Pricing for those who pick up multiple boxes will drop for $ 12.99. The Premiere XL and Premiere Elite boxes will remain unchanged, but their prices will go to $ 249.99 and $ 399.99, respectively.

Apparently the current 320GB model is being sold for clearance prices…

TiVo co-founder and CTO Jim Barton resigns

TiVo Premiere STB

TiVo is losing its CTO and co-founder, Jim Barton. The news was released in an SEC filing that says that Barton resigned, effective yesterday, and will take up a $ 25,000 per month consulting role at the company “related to patent matters, litigation, and certain technical matters” for the next three years. TiVo hasn’t publicly released the news, but Deadline.com reports that CEO Tom Rogers said “We are extremely grateful to Jim for his years of dedication and his commitment to innovation that he has provided to TiVo since its founding. We are pleased that he will remain on in an advisory capacity and look forward to working with him in this new capacity in the future.” It’s not clear what Barton plans to do next, other than that he’s…

TiVo transcoder and IP-based set top box coming ‘by the end of summer’

TiVo transcoder and IP-based set top box coming ‘by the end of summer’

TiVo prototype

Nestled within TiVo’s surprisingly decent fourth quarter results was a statement from CEO Tom Rogers, who said that “By the end of the summer, we’ll further that lead with the addition of the four-stream transcoder and an IP-STB.” If that sounds like a confusing mess of acronyms to you, let us translate. The four-stream transcoder is likely to be the commercial version of the box that we previewed at CES. It will allow you to wirelessly stream content from your TiVo DVR to an iPad or to wirelessly sideload that same content for later viewing. The IP-STB is a box that sits somewhere between a TiVo and a Roku or Boxee box, offering the same TiVo streaming but also potentially offering direct access to video content from internet sources…

AT&T to pay TiVo $215 million through 2018 to settle patent lawsuit

AT&T has settled a patent lawsuit with TiVo in which it will pay the DVR vendor $ 215 million through June 2018, including an initial payment of $ 51 million. AT&T will also pay “incremental recurring per subscriber monthly license fees” to TiVo through July 2018 if its subscriber base surpasses a certain level, TiVo said in a statement Wednesday. AT&T and TiVo were locked in a patent battle after AT&T began to market its own digital video recorder using a technology patented by TiVo. TiVo also recently settled similar lawsuits with Dish Network and EchoStar Corp. Read on for more. “We are extremely pleased to reach an agreement with AT&T, which acknowledges the value of our intellectual property,” said Tom Rogers,
