Retro City Rampage for Vita looks like this

Retro City Rampage for Vita looks like this

Image

We may not have any idea when to expect Retro City Rampage on the Vita (and various other platforms), but we’re starting to see what it’ll look like once it’s finally done.

Potential rampagers need not worry about the Vita’s smaller screen size, according to developer Brian Provinciano, as the portable version has been outfitted with two different scaling options; one that scales the game to ensure everything is clearly visible, and another that maintains the console version’s original 16:9 aspect ration and stylized borders.

Touchscreen functionality has also been “tastefully” implemented, but only so far as to aid in navigating menus and during shopping sprees. “If you’re an absolute purist,” Provinciano adds, “you can still play the game 100% with the buttons.” The Vita version also supports “continuous play” with the PS3 version, meaning that saves transfer between the two platforms and both versions share the same universal scoreboard.

Additionally, the Vita and PS3 ports will come packed with visual filters that make the game look like various systems of yore, such as the all-red “Virtual Burn” and monochrome “Brick Handheld” settings.

Watch this: SpaceX launch live on NASA TV at 3.44am ET / 8.44am BST

spacex falcon nasa TV

After a series of delays and false starts, the historic SpaceX mission to the International Space Station is set to launch this morning. Liftoff is scheduled for 3.44am ET, or 8.44am BST, and if all goes to plan SpaceX’s unmanned Dragon capsule will become the first privately-owned craft to dock with the ISS early on Friday morning. It’s worth noting that we’ve gotten this far before and ended up disappointed by a last-minute abort, but we have a good feeling this time around. You can watch the launch online over at NASA TV — coverage has already started, and there’s less than an hour to go. NASA will also be streaming a post-launch news conference at 5.15am ET / 10.15am BST.

Babel Rising should’ve been named ‘Babel Falling,’ this trailer suggests

What would life be like if you could fell entire civilizations with a flick of your wrist, crush hordes of men with a downward swat and destroy worlds with a ridiculous, wide-armed downhill skiing motion? You’d either be Lord Voldemort, or you’d be playing Babel Rising on Kinect, like the stylish young man in the video above.

Babel Rising is set to launch in June for PlayStation Move and Xbox 360′s Kinect.

Unleash ‘The Power of Liking’ in Infinity Blade 2′s ‘Vault of Tears’ this Thursday (tissues not included)

It’s not a new box set from The Cure, nor from Joy Division, nor from Him. It’s not a Tears for Fears reference, nor is it access to Prince’s 1980s clothing selections! Nope, Infinity Blade 2‘s “Vault of Tears” is actually a massive (free) content update headed to Epic’s latest iOS entry this Thursday.

Several new enemies are being added, as well as “more than 50 new items” and rewards. Most bizarrely, the ability to “earn extra turns and invite their friends, family, and other non-Infinity Blade players to do in-game damage with the power of liking and re-tweeting battle calls.” You read that right, folks: “the power of liking and re-tweeting battle calls.” In the biz, we call that a “paradigm shift.” Also, awful.

Watch this: one-time 1983 special ‘Battle of the Video Games’

Battle of the Video Games THE AWL

The arcade as we know it may not exist anymore in the US, but there was a time when they were big enough to garner their own TV shows. The Awl has dug up the intro to “Battle of the Video Games,” a spectacular taste of the culture of 1983 — that’s nearly thirty years ago if you’ve conveniently let that slip from your mind. The one-time special features Heather Locklear, Happy Days‘ Anson Williams, Lou Ferrigno, Scott Baio, and other ’80s — erm — stars. The contest pits the celebrities, split into two teams, against each other in three rounds: Ms. Pac-Man, BugerTime, and Frogger. Unfortunately it appears that only the introduction to the show has survived to make it onto YouTube, but it’s certainly worth a watch to see the gameplay…

Play This: ‘Super Strict Farmer’

Super Strict Farmer

The Ludum Dare game jam, themed this year around “tiny worlds,” has previously proved a fertile source of browser games, most recently Extensionism. Super Strict Farmer (built, like several of the others, in 48 hours) takes inspiration from Settlers of Catan or even FarmVille, but in a miniature form that’s limited to twelve rounds. Two players (or one player and a devilishly good AI) compete to strip the resources from a floating island, building structures and gathering enough food to stave off starvation long enough to score victory points before the end of the game. The rules are explained on the game page here, but it’s more fun to learn through playing a quick game or two, and the fast pace keeps it from getting frustrating or…

Watch this: inside Jim Henson’s animatronics shop

animatronics

In a video simply titled Animatronics, special effects creator Adrian Parish gives us a brief look behind the scenes of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Highlights include a polar bear from The Snow Queen and a very thirsty Camel from a Volvic commercial, and the entire video is set to a rigorous drum ‘n’ bass soundtrack. Now excuse us while we go and work out where exactly the troll animatronics were used in the CGI-laden Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Play this: ‘Star Drill’

Star Drill

In Star Drill you only have one goal: to grab as many diamonds as you can before you die. It’s a kamikaze mission to be sure, but it’s no less addictive because of it. It’s yet another excellent game from the most recent Ludum Dare competition, and it plays sort of like a sci-fi version of Dig Dug. You play as a tiny spaceship burrowing your way through planets in order to harvest diamonds, but along the way you’ll need to avoid incoming projectiles, lava explosions, and even explosive charges buried beneath the surface. You can only go down, and when you finish with one planet you’ll need to fly your way to the next. The gameplay is pretty simple — all you need are the arrow keys — but the one-hit kills make sure each round is…

Watch this: ‘Community’ video game finale is a dazzling retro adventure

Watch this: ‘Community’ video game finale is a dazzling retro adventure

Community

Fans of NBC’s Community are no stranger to bizarre and unexpected twists, since the show’s creator has often taken dramatic license with its format from episode to episode. And Thursday’s finale, set in a beautifully conceived video game world, is probably one of the most unique and exciting primetime episodes of television we’ve seen in some time. The episode tracks the Greendale Community College’s infamous study group as it travels through a rougelike retro gameworld in pursuit of the character Pierce’s (Chevy Chase) inheritance. While the game itself is obviously a far-fetched creation, it’s a joy to watch the characters figure out how to grapple with its challenges as they face off against a devious archenemy played by the…
