Target to stop carrying Amazon Kindle hardware due to ‘conflict of interest’?

Amazon Kindle Store down

Since Target stores began selling Amazon’s Kindle line back in 2010, the devices have always appeared to do well; the Kindle Fire was even the retailer’s best-selling tablet during Black Friday last year. It appears that’s about to change, however, with a source telling us that the company is going to stop carrying the line of products due to a “conflict of interest.” According to an internal Target memo we’ve received, the company will be removing Amazon hardware from its locations starting this month. Certain accessories will remain in stock, but shipments of Kindles themselves will cease as of May 13th.

A quick search through Target’s online store reveals that Amazon’s e-readers have already vanished from its listings, and the K…

Cricket expands its retail reach with move into Target stores

cricket samsung android qwerty 2000

Things just got a little easier for US smartphone owners looking for a budget-friendly carrier, with Cricket announcing that it will be selling its wares at Target stores throughout the United States. Cricket is known for offering contract-free plans at prices that are bargains when compared to the company’s more well-known brethren like Verizon and AT&T. Of course, there is a trade-off; you won’t be getting cutting-edge devices from Cricket, but the move should provide plenty of chances for the company to expand its subscriber base. You can find the carrier’s phones and plans at almost 1,600 different Target locations now.

Sprint’s target 2014 4G LTE coverage map revealed

Sprint’s target 2014 4G LTE coverage map revealed

Sprint LTE Map 484

In a speech at the Rural Cellular Association’s Spring Expo in Orlando, a Sprint executive flashed the above slide and Sascha Segan of PCMag snagged a shot of it. What you’re looking at is a map of Sprint’s 4G LTE coverage circa 2014, when it intends to have completed its “Network Vision” plan. Areas in dark green represent direct LTE coverage while the light blue would be handled by roaming agreement. It’s a rosy picture of a nationwide network, especially since the company has yet to launch LTE anywhere yet. However, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are all slated to receive Sprint’s LTE first, by the middle of this year, so we shouldn’t have too long to wait to see if Sprint is on its way to filing out this map without the…

Wired: NSA building massive surveillance facility, ‘everybody with communication is a target’

National Security Agency Utah Data Center Org Chart

In 2005, a New York Times article broke the news that the National Security Agency had been engaging in a warrantless wiretapping program that monitored domestic communications — but the agency may have much bigger ambitions in mind. Wired takes a look at the construction of a top-secret $ 2 billion facility in the Utah desert — known simply as the Utah Data Center — that will reportedly be a storehouse for incredible amounts of both public and private data from international and domestic citizens. The facility is said to be filled with 25,000 square feet of servers, housing everything from Google searches, online product purchase records, as well as intercepted emails and cell phone calls. According to Wired, the incoming data is…

Wal-Mart, Target and other retailers secretly working on mobile payments system, reports WSJ

NFC Contactless Payments reciever (1020)

If you were hoping that the powers that be would settle on one tap-to-pay smartphone system, you’re out of luck: The Wall Street Journal reports that “roughly two dozen retailers” including Target and Wal-Mart are collaborating on a new mobile payment system of their own. While some of the publication’s facts appear to come from anonymous sources, there doesn’t seem to be any doubt in the report: consulting firm BetterBuyDesign spoke on the record about the technology, saying that retailers decided they could do better than than existing mobile payment systems like Isis and Google Wallet, both in terms of privacy and security and in providing targeted offers (like these, perhaps?) to customers. Target wouldn’t share any details, but it…

Facebook to become the newest target of hacker group Anonymous [video]

Facebook to become the newest target of hacker group Anonymous [video]

Over the past week, notorious hacker group Anonymous has launched numerous DDoS attacks that disrupted service to a number of popular websites. The global hacker collective recently took down websites belonging to the Department of Justice, Universal Music, the Record Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America to protest SOPA, PIPA and the takedown of Megaupload. According to a new video posted on Monday, Anonymous now aims to take down Facebook. It in unclear as to why Facebook is the group’s new target; while the video mentions SOPA as part of its reason for the attack, Facebook openly opposed the controversial bill. In the past, Anonymous has listed potential targets as the United Nations, Xbox Live, U.S. Bank, Twitter and YouTube. [Via BusinessInsider]

Sterne Agee: RIM still a solid acquisition target, but only at a discount

Sterne Agee: RIM still a solid acquisition target, but only at a discount

Struggling smartphone vendor Research In Motion is still a solid takeover target according to a new report, but only at a deep discount below RIM’s already low market value. RIM has lost 75% of its value over the past year but Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu says RIM’s true value lies below its current market capitalization, which sits at approximately $ 8.7 billion. Logical buyers according to Wu include Samsung — though the company has gone on record instating it is not interested in acquiring RIM — as well as Amazon, Microsoft and maybe even Facebook. Read on for more. “While we believe there is some intrinsic value in RIMM as an acquisition target with its 75 million subscribers, patent portfolio,

Target confirms that it will have 25 stores with mini Apple stores

During a presentation on Thursday, Target confirmed that it will have 25 stores featuring “special displays” of Apple products. Apple may open stores inside 25 Target locations

Apple may be planning to open retail stores inside as many as 25 Target locations, according to recent rumors. The partnership would likely be similar to Apple’s deal with Best Buy, which sells the Cupertino-based company’s products from dedicated mini-stores within more than 600 Best Buy locations. AppleInsider said Friday that Apple is likely interested in Target so that it can offer its products in markets that are too small for a full blown Apple Store. Apple’s senior vice president of retail operations, Ron Johnson, once served as an executive at Target, so there is a new link between the two companies that could add some weight to this rumor. Read
