The promotion was announced by Alec Saunders, the company’s VP of developer relations, with developers having been given until February 13th to submit their applications. Read

Windows 8 tablets could be priced right out of contention

Windows 8 tablets could be priced right out of contention

Tablets were the talk of the Consumer Electronics Show this year, but not the same way they were last year. In 2011 we saw more than 100 slates unveiled, the lion’s share of which were powered bu Android, and companies pushed hard to compete with Apple’s iPad. This year, barely any Android tablets were shown off at the show, but a number of companies had nameless prototypes on hand that were intended to show us what Windows 8 will be capable of once it hits the market. Unfortunately, according to a new report, the fantastic “Wintel” tablets we saw on display at this year’s show may end up with price tags that could deter most consumers and hurt Windows 8 tablets’

CES 2012 recap: New TV tech excites, tablets are toast

It was estimated that between 140,000 and 150,000 people attended the show in Las Vegas this week — CES’s record stands at 149,529, achieved last year — and the show was as busy as we’ve ever seen it. Hundreds of companies touted thousands of gadgets and all of the big names were there showing off their upcoming wares. As is always the case, however, a few products managed to outshine the rest. Tiny gamepad connects to PC, tablets, or phones over Bluetooth

Tiny gamepad connects to PC, tablets, or phones over Bluetooth

It would appear the “thing” at CES this year is iPhone/iPad controllers. Following the announcement of three such devices from iCade, SteelSeries has revealed the Ion Mobile Controller, a tiny control pad designed to work over Bluetooth with PCs, tablets, or phones. It has a full suite of buttons and analog sticks, and a rechargeable battery for up to 20 hours of use.

As is unfortunately the trend with these things, no list of compatible software has been announced. More details, including pricing, will be revealed as its Q3 release approaches.

Other accessories featured in SteelSeries’ lineup include an “ultra-portable” headset and a bunch of different mice. It’s CES! That’s prime “here’s a list of accessories” season.

USB 3.0 coming to smartphones and tablets by the end of 2012

USB 3.0 coming to smartphones and tablets by the end of 2012

On Sunday, the USB standards setting organization announced that USB 3.0 ports will be coming to smartphones and tablets by the end of the year. Mobile devices will feature a microUSB port based on USB 3.0 technology to fit the small size of the devices, said chief technology officer of the USB Implementers Forum Rahman Ismail. Currently smartphones and tablets use the older and slower USB 2.0 technology, but upgraded devices will sport data transfer rates as fast as 800Mbps. “What takes 15 minutes will roughly take 1 minute and 10 seconds,” said Ismail. USB 3.0 mobile transfer speeds will be considerably slower than their PC counterparts, though, which can reach up to 5Gbps. However, smartphones and tablet will feature faster charging due to
