Chinese search giant Baidu has unveiled the first phone to run the latest iteration of its cloud-focused Android fork. It turns out that the device leaked last week is known as the Changhong H5018, a low-end device with a 3.5-inch 320 x 480 screen, a 650MHz processor, and a three-megapixel camera inside a 10.3mm-thick frame. What sets it apart is the new Baidu Cloud OS, which is based on Android 2.3 and comes with 300GB of storage, along with predictable customizations such as a Baidu search widget. You won’t find the Google Play Store, of course, but Baidu has set up its own marketplace for apps and music. The phone costs 899 yuan (about $ 142) off-contract, and is compatible with both WCDMA and GSM SIM cards — just in case you want to…

LaCie has updated its network attached storage unit today with the 2Big NAS, a mild refresh that bumps up the maximum throughput speed by 40MB/s to a total of 100MB/s thanks to a new processor and an “improved file system.” The new unit also drops the power drain in deep sleep mode by 90 percent compared to the previous model, the 2Big Network 2. Like the that model, it supports RAID 0 and 1 for either maximum speed or maximum security, and has Ethernet, eSATA, and USB 2.0 ports. It also runs LaCie’s NAS OS 2, which supports the MyNAS app for iOS that’ll let you check out your files from your phone. If you’re interested, the 2Big NAS is available now with a bring-your-own storage model ringing up at $ 299.99, though it will be sold with…

Droplr Pro: file-sharing service goes big-time with 100GB of cloud storage for $3 a month

droplr app

There are lots of options out there for quickly sharing files, blocks of text, screenshots, and the like, but several of us at The Verge are big fans of Droplr. It’s a great free service, giving you 1GB of storage and allowing uploads up to 25MB in size, but if you’re a heavy user you’ve no doubt run into these limits. Well, today Droplr is announcing Droplr Pro, giving you 1GB uploads and 100GB of storage for introductory pricing of just $ 3 a month or $ 30 a year. If you don’t need to keep folders synced on multiple devices, the price undercuts everyone in our cloud storage faceoff at the 100GB tier — for comparison, 100GB of Google Drive storage will run you $ 4.99 a month, and the same amount of storage at Dropbox will set you…

Sony’s PlayMemories online storage service is now available in the UK, France, and Germany, allowing users to store up to 5GB of photos and videos in the cloud. From there, they can be accessed by a number of means — the service is integrated into the PlayStation 3, Bravia TVs, and the company’s digital photo frames, as well as offering apps for iOS and Android. As the name suggests, there’s an online element too, allowing you to organize your images wherever you are. It’s also supported by Sony’s Bloggie range of cameras, allowing you to upload the photos you take direct to the cloud.

Once your pictures and videos are uploaded, you can create postcards to share them with friends via the web. The obvious draw of the service will be for…

Google ups free Gmail storage to 10GB

Google ups free Gmail storage to 10GB

Google on Tuesday unveiled its new “Google Drive” cloud storage solution, taking direct aim at Microsoft’s SkyDrive, Dropbox and other similar services. The new offering includes 5GB of free cloud-based storage and allows users to store, collaborate on, and share documents and other files. At the same time as its new Google Drive service was rolling out across the Web, Google also quietly gave Gmail users a capacity boost of more than 35% according to reports. Gmail launched in 2004 with 1GB of free storage and that figure has been increasing steadily to just over 7GB as of earlier this week. On Tuesday, Gmail’s free storage climbed to 10GB according to a report from Engadget. We haven’t seen the storage boost hit our inboxes yet, but a number of users reportedly have. Google has not formally announced the update.
