Sony putting IPTV plans on hold because of Comcast bandwidth caps

The last we heard of Sony’s rumored IPTV ambitions was a fairly non-commital “never say never,” but now an executive has shed some light on what’s been taking the company so long. Sony Network Entertainment VP and GM Michael Aragon told the Variety Entertainment & Technology Summit that Comcast’s policy of capping bandwidth is putting the company off making a move:

These guys have the pipe and the bandwidth. If they start capping things, it gets difficult.

Comcast has come under fire of late for its decision not to count data from its Xfinity video-on-demand service towards broadband bandwidth caps, with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings accusing the company of violating net neutrality principles. Aragon reportedly says that Sony is waiting…

Verizon has announced that the Sony Xperia Play received an update today. No, it’s not the Android 4.0 update we’re sure you’re waiting for (that’s scheduled for late May or early June), but there are a couple of minor but significant changes in the latest software version. The update bumps up the phone to Android 2.3.4, and lets you use the right trigger button to take photos. Additionally, the new version adds continuous autofocus to the phone’s video capabilities, and you’ll be able to take a screenshot by holding down the power button. There are a menagerie of other changes, as well, including support for the Wireless Emergency Alert system, improved controls during Bluetooth music playback, and new pre-loaded Verizon Wireless apps…

Sony awarded patent for Xperia Play with double the keyboards

Sony awarded patent for Xperia Play with double the keyboards

Image

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has assigned Sony a patent for “electronic devices having multiple keypads and related methods,” which when translated out of Patentese and into The Queen’s English, means “cell-phones with two sliding keyboards and stuff.”

The patent application is chock full of ballistically confusing descriptions like “a second slidable unit having a second keypad thereon, the second slidable unit being slidably connected to the upper unit and the first slidable unit,” but the basic idea of the patent is fairly straight forward: Rather than having one slide-out keypad like the existing Xperia Play, this device would have two keyboards stacked on top of each other, and the user would decide which to slide out depending on the situation.

Obviously, the most practical application of this tech would be to equip one keyboard with a QWERTY layout and the other with PlayStation controls, but whether or not this patent will get any actual use remains to be seen. With phones getting larger, physical keyboards falling to the wayside and the PlayStation Suite still in beta testing, the chances of Sony taking a risk on a device that’s market is slowly waning seems unlikely.

Sony NEX-F3 leaked photo reveals 16-megapixel sensor, 180-degree tilting screen, and pop-up flash

Sony NEX-F3 leaked photo reveals 16-megapixel sensor, 180-degree tilting screen, and pop-up flash

sony nex-f3 (sony alpha rumors)

The next entry in Sony’s popular mirrorless camera series is set to be the NEX-F3. Sony Alpha Rumors has the first picture of the camera, and says it’s due to be announced next month as a replacement for the NEX-C3. From the picture we can see that it has a 16-megapixel sensor (likely the excellent Sony unit used in the NEX-5n, Nikon D7000, and others), a white body, AVCHD video, and what looks like a pop-up flash. That last feature has only been found on the premium NEX-7 until now, with all other NEX models shipping with a small clip-on flash. Like all other NEX cameras the F3 has a tilting screen, but it looks like this one can tilt 180 degrees for framing self-portraits — could this become the mirrorless camera of choice for…

First waterproof Sony Handycam coming to Japan on May 25th

First waterproof Sony Handycam coming to Japan on May 25th

via asset3.cbsistatic.com

We’ve seen several waterproof products in the past few months, and it looks like the technology has caught on enough to be included in one of Sony’s popular Handycam camcorders. The HDR-GW77V, announced yesterday for the Japanese market, can be dunked in water as deep as five meters (16 feet) for up to an hour. It should also repel dust and can be dropped from a height of 1.5 meters (five feet). Otherwise, the HDR-GW77V is a nice but fairly normal high-definition camcorder that can shoot in 1080p resolution and take 20.4-megapixel stills with 10x optical zoom and 16GB of internal storage. It’s rounded out with a few extra features, including a built-in GPS for geotagging and mapping pictures or video.

In Japan, the new Handycam will be…

Sony PlayMemories Online cloud storage launches in the UK, France, and Germany

Sony PlayMemories Online cloud storage launches in the UK, France, and Germany

via dl.dropbox.com

Sony’s PlayMemories online storage service is now available in the UK, France, and Germany, allowing users to store up to 5GB of photos and videos in the cloud. From there, they can be accessed by a number of means — the service is integrated into the PlayStation 3, Bravia TVs, and the company’s digital photo frames, as well as offering apps for iOS and Android. As the name suggests, there’s an online element too, allowing you to organize your images wherever you are. It’s also supported by Sony’s Bloggie range of cameras, allowing you to upload the photos you take direct to the cloud.

Once your pictures and videos are uploaded, you can create postcards to share them with friends via the web. The obvious draw of the service will be for…

Sony registers domain for ‘PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale’

Sony registers domain for ‘PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale’

Image

Back in November of last year, rumors swirled over Title Fight, which was reportedly an unannounced brawler/fighting game staring characters from various Sony and PlayStation-exclusive franchises, like Heavenly Sword and God of War.

The game was said to be in development at SuperBot Entertainment, and that’s about all that ever came of it, since the rumor died off almost as quickly as it had flared into life. Now though, new life has been injected into its whimpering husk with the registration of an extremely longwinded URL: http://www.playstationallstarsbattleroyale.com

If we follow the rumor train’s logic tracks, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is Title Fight‘s actual name, and the game is set to be officially announced on Spike TV this Thursday. The URL does belong to “Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC,” according to the its whois information, so that much at least has been verified as totes legit. As for whether this thing is what became of Title Fight, however, we’ll have to wait and see. One thing’s for sure, though: That URL is way too long.

Sony restores PSN games that allowed Vita hack (but there’s another one)

Sony restores PSN games that allowed Vita hack (but there’s another one)

Image

Sony pulled two PSP titles, Hot Shots Tennis and MotorStorm Arctic Rift, from the PlayStation Network in March when they were found to be open portals to Vita hacking heaven, allowing people to use homebrew programming through the Vita’s PSP emulator. Both of these titles are currently back on the Vita and the hack scare is gone forever and ev – er, maybe not.

Vita version 1.67 closed off the ability for hackers to run the VHBL program in Hot Shot Tennis and MotorStorm Arctic Rift, but the folks at Wololo.net have found another game that runs the same program even after the update. The above video shows Wololo’s Doom running on a Vita. It hasn’t yet disclosed which game allows the hack.
