Canalys: Smartphone shipments surpassed PC shipments in 2011

Smartphone shipments overtook client PC shipments for the first time in 2011, according to new data from market research firm Canalys. Vendors shipped a total of 158.5 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, representing a 57% increase compared to the 101.2 million units shipped in the same quarter a year earlier. Shipments for the full year of 2011 rose 63% to 487.7 million units, up from 299.7 million shipped in 2010. The PC market only grew 15% to 414.6 million units in 2011, which included an astonishing 274% increase in tablet shipments — tablets accounted for 15% of all PC shipments last year according to Canalys. Apple and Samsung to pull in 90% of smartphone profits in 2012, UBS says

Industry watchers agree that smartphone sales will continue to balloon in 2012, but much of the projected growth will seemingly be enjoyed by just two companies. In a report to clients earlier this week, UBS analyst Maynard Um lowered his full-year unit sales projections for cell phones to 1.69 billion from his earlier estimate of 1.7 billion units. New Samsung smartphone running Android 4.0 revealed ahead of MWC announcement

Samsung has plans to announce a new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-powered smartphone at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona later this month. An image of the unknown device was published on Thursday by industry insider Eldar Murtazin, though no additional details were provided. The handset looks very similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S II handset, but the buttons beneath the display have clearly been updated to support Android 4.0. The phone is likely not the upcoming flagship Galaxy S III, however, as Samsung recently stated that its Galaxy S II successor would not be announced at MWC. Samsung unveils the Galaxy S Advance smartphone; global roll-out begins next month

Never afraid of a mouthful when it comes to device names, Samsung on Monday unveiled the Galaxy S Advance smartphone. The new phone is seemingly set to be positioned as a mid-range handset with specs that fall between the original Galaxy S and the updated Galaxy S II line. The Galaxy S Advance features a curved design with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with 480 x 800-pixel resolution, a dual core 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera, HSPA 14.4 support, 768MB of RAM and up to 16GB of internal storage. Apple reclaims No.1 smartphone spot in Q4

Apple is once again the top smartphone vendor in the world by shipment volume according to a report released late Thursday. Market research firm Strategy Analytics noted that total fourth-quarter smartphone shipments grew 54% year-over-year in 2011 to hit 155 million units. BlackBerry users are older and wealthier than average smartphone users, study suggests

BlackBerry owners tend to be older and wealthier than other smartphone users according to a new report released this week. Data from comScore Data Mine suggests BlackBerry users are “more likely to have a household greater than $ 75,000 when compared to average smartphone owners.” BlackBerry owners were also more likely to have at least part of all of their monthly mobile bill paid for by their employers. Android accounted for less than 19% of Q4 smartphone sales at AT&T

Apple’s share of the global smartphone market reportedly topped the market share of all Android vendors combined in the fourth quarter last year, and nowhere was the iPhone’s lead more dominant than at AT&T. The nation’s No.2 carrier on Thursday reported its earnings for the December quarter, stating that smartphone activations totaled 9.4 million units. Apple’s iPhone lineup accounted for 7.6 million activations, or 81% of all smartphones AT&T activated during the three months ended in December. Sony ST25i ‘Kumquat’ Android smartphone possibly leaked
