Time Warner confirms HBO Go coming to Xbox 360 and Roku today

HBO Go

Yesterday a report surfaced that the HBO Go streaming service would be available to Time Warner customers on both the Roku and Xbox 360, and now Time Warner has confirmed that this is the case. The app should be available to subscribers on all three platforms at some point today — Time Warner says that it could take “a few hours” before everyone has access. While the HBO Go app originally launched on the 360 back in March, the streaming service previously wasn’t available to Time Warner subscribers. However, the cable service’s customers have been able to use the app via a Samsung Smart TV since early this year. The app should be available to all subscribers by tonight, so if you don’t see it yet be sure to check back later in the day….

Time Warner customers, others getting HBO Go on Xbox 360 and Roku tomorrow?

hbo go

HBO will reportedly extend access to its HBO Go streaming service to more cable customers tomorrow. Engadget has screenshots of Xbox 360 and Roku activation menus that show the previously unavailable Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks logos, along with Comcast and DirecTV appearing for Roku. The site’s sources also say that Time Warner Cable customers will be able to access HBO Go on Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players, though the service actually rolled out for TWC on Samsung Smart TVs back in February. No mention of specific models was made.

HBO and Time Warner Cable are yet to comment, but if you subscribe to one of the mentioned providers it might be worth trying the activation process once or twice come May 17th. The rest of…

Is Time Warner bringing its live streaming TV service to Roku boxes?

Is Time Warner bringing its live streaming TV service to Roku boxes?

TWC TV desktop app press

After debuting on iOS and later expanding to web browsers and Android, Time Warner’s live streaming TV service, TWC TV, may soon be made available for Roku set top boxes. Citing an unnamed source, Engadget claims that company representatives are currently being briefed on the software, but cautions that a public rollout could still be several months away. With Comcast’s Xfinity app launching on the Xbox 360 last month, potentially reaching millions of new users via Xbox Live, the heat is on for Time Warner to offer its streaming service on more devices.

Roku to launch in Canada with over 100 channels, pre-orders start today

Roku 2 XS full size hero

We heard that Roku was planning to go international with its tiny streaming boxes, and after launching in the UK a couple of months ago, the company has announced that its products are available to pre-order in Canada as of today. Those in the north will only get to choose from the Roku 2 XD and XS for CA$ 89.99 and CA$ 109.99, respectively, from Amazon, Walmart, London Drugs, and Roku’s own website. Both models are expected to ship later this month, and they come with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 1080p streaming. The step-up XS has an Ethernet and USB port, and includes a gaming remote to play with the included copy of Angry Birds. Roku says the streamers come with over 100 channels, including Netflix, Crackle, NHL, MLB.TV, Facebook, Flickr, and…

New Roku HD media streamer reportedly reaches stores, priced at $60

New Roku HD media streamer reportedly reaches stores, priced at $60

Roku HD seen in stores

Last month we got a glimpse of a new Roku device thanks to an FCC filing, and it appears the miniature media streamer is now landing on store shelves. Zatz Not Funny reportedly found one of the devices — named simply the Roku HD — at an unnamed brick-and-mortar retailer. Said to be priced at $ 60, the device offers 720p streaming, HDMI outputs, and also brings back the composite audio and video connectors that had been dropped from previous iterations of Roku’s products. It’s still not quite clear what the company’s strategy is with the new device; it has yet to appear on either Amazon or Roku’s own site, and the naming puts it at a distinct marketing disadvantage when compared to the rest of the Roku 2 line (not to mention the…

Official Plex channel comes to Roku media streamers with new UI and photo browsing

Official Plex channel comes to Roku media streamers with new UI and photo browsing

Official Plex channel for Roku screenshot

Roku just announced a software update earlier in the month, and now owners of the diminutive boxes have something else to smile about: an official Plex channel. While Plex had already offered a client through its own private channel, this is an officially-sanctioned addition, available right in Roku’s own Channel Store. It brings with it a number of improvements, including an improved grid UI and theme, full support for online myPlex account information, and a number of bugfixes. The new channel also also adds the ability to browse through any audio files or photos that may be present on your Plex Media Server, and provides transcode-free playback of formats natively supported by Roku boxes as well. If you’d like to get started, the new…

Roku 2 and LT players get version 4.3 update

Roku 2 and LT players get version 4.3 update

Roku 2 XS full size hero

Roku has started rolling out a version 4.3 update to its media players. It’s not quite as feature-rich as the 4.2 update was, focusing on a range of compatibility fixes and performance improvements. A lot of the tweaks are focused on Netflix, which should see faster startup time, improved audio and subtitle settings, and “optimized performance of screen navigation.” Elsewhere, there’s improved support for multiple gaming remotes, SSDP mobile device discovery, and HLS streaming. Roku started pushing the update out to users a couple of days ago, but if you haven’t yet received it you can get it direct from the Settings menu. It’s compatible with all Roku 2 boxes, along with the lower-priced LT.

New Roku 2 HD box appears in FCC filing

New Roku 2 HD box appears in FCC filing

roku 2 hd fcc

A new Roku HD player has shown up in an FCC filing. The box looks very similar to the Roku 2 HD player, and indeed the manual refers to it as a “Roku 2″ with the giveaway “HD” letters visible on the top side. There are only a few external differences that we can see: the bottom of the box is bright purple making the device look like an inverted Roku LT, the microSD slot has been jettisoned in favor of 2GB internal memory, and there’s a full-sized composite output on the back in place of the old 3.5mm adapter. The last change is an unusual direction for the company to go — we don’t think the number of people using composite cables is rising, exactly — but with the Apple TV essentially an HD-only affair the lower-priced Roku boxes…

Roku iOS app gets updated with additional controls

Roku iOS app gets updated with additional controls

roku remote

Roku updated its iOS remote app this week, offering a few new ways for users to get around their tiny video streamer. The biggest change is an update to the apps navigation controls. Roku added a more traditional D-pad than the previous version, and users can now easily switch between it and swiping to navigate. The app also offers quick shortcuts to Netflix, Pandora, and Crackle, as well as easier pairing with your Roku box. And for those of you with Android devices, Roku has said a remote app for Google’s mobile OS is on the way. The update is available now in the App Store, or you can get the app at the source link below.

Roku HD-XR and Roku SD Player announced

Roku HD-XR and Roku SD Player announced

Roku

Adding two new versions to their popular Netflix, Amazon streaming device, Roku has introduced Roku HD-XR and Roku SD. For $129, the Roku HD-XR carries all the specs of the Roku HD with the addition of a USB port and 802.11n WiFi. At the moment, the USB port serves no purpose, but we wouldn’t count a firmware update to make use of it. The Roku SD on the other hand is for all who just want the movies regardless of the quality. Unlike the Roku HD, it will not include HDMI, component, S-video or optical audio out. Pricing for the SD model will be $79.
