Nintendo releasing retail games on 3DS eShop, starting with New Super Mario Bros. 2

Nintendo releasing retail games on 3DS eShop, starting with New Super Mario Bros. 2

Satoru Iwata dropped the proverbial bomb today in an investor presentation, announcing plans to distribute certain retail 3DS games on the eShop download service, where they will be stored on the SD card. The first game to receive this dual release treatment is New Super Mario Bros. 2, due worldwide in August. In addition, the “Onitore” Brain Training game will be sold in this manner.

As for the kinds of games Nintendo wants to distribute digitally, Iwata offered the following explanation: “Nintendo publishes various titles that enable you to enjoy daily communication, such as ‘nintendogs,’ ‘Animal Crossing’ and ‘Tomodachi Collection,’ in addition to the ones like ‘Onitore’ (temp.), with which you might like to practice every day, and database-type software like ‘Hana to Ikimono Rittai Zukan’ (sold in Japan only). It must be easier for the Nintendo 3DS owners to feel the merit of being able to carry around only the Nintendo 3DS system with, in particular, these kinds of software titles stored inside.”

He added that even other, non daily-communication-related titles stored on a single system would be “handy.”

Nintendo plans to sell codes for downloadable versions at retailers, in addition to directly through eShop, in order to avoid cutting its retail partners out, and to avoid alienating users who prefer to buy everything at retail. “Furthermore,” he said, “we recognize that one of the biggest hurdles for the expansion of our digital business is the limited methods to expose digitally downloadable products to potential consumers. This recognition is one of the reasons why we are taking this sort of approach.”

3DS sold under cost since price cut, Nintendo ‘hoping’ to profit by March 2013

3DS sold under cost since price cut, Nintendo ‘hoping’ to profit by March 2013

Nintendo took a big hit last year when it dropped the price of its then-nascent handheld, the 3DS, to $ 180 just a few short months after initial launch. Such a hit, apparently, that Nintendo is selling the unit for less than it costs the company to produce, as revealed in the company’s latest financial earnings. “Its hardware has been sold below cost because of its significant price cut in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012,” the financial report says.

But don’t count Nintendo out! The company says it “expects to cease selling it below cost by the middle of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013.” Which, in normal human terms, means Nintendo expects to start making money on the console around August of this year. So, you know, if you’re really trying to stick it to Nintendo, go buy the 3DS between now and August. That’ll show ‘em!

The 3DS currently sells for $ 170, down from the $ 250 price tag it launched with back March of 2011.

Nintendo celebrates Kirby’s 20th Anniversary on Wii

Opening up the Nintendo Direct conference livestream, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the company has big plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kirby. A new Wii game will collect past titles and package them on a retail disc – which classic Kirby titles would be included is a mystery.

Outside of the existence of Kirby’s 20th Anniversary on Wii, nothing else is known right now.

Nintendo announces ‘New Super Mario Bros 2′ and major 3DS firmware update

Nintendo announces ‘New Super Mario Bros 2′ and major 3DS firmware update

nintendo mushroom 3ds

Nintendo has announced New Super Mario Bros 2 for 3DS. The game will be out in August in Japan, and is in the same 2D/3D style as the previous New Super Mario Bros games on DS and Wii. The company also announced a major 3DS firmware update coming April 25th that will enable folder organization (finally!) and allow game patches and upgrades to be issued easily.

Also on the way this year is a 20th anniversary compilation of Kirby games for Wii, along with a confirmed autumn launch in Japan for Tobidase: Doubutsu no Mori, the 3DS iteration of the Animal Crossing series.

The news comes via a webcast currently being broadcast to Japanese audiences.

Nintendo Direct time travels with news tonight, tomorrow, yesterday

Nintendo Direct time travels with news tonight, tomorrow, yesterday

Image

Nintendo Direct, the all-Nintendo-news, some-of-the-time video series from official Nintendo headquarters, is hitting the airwaves tonight. Technically, it’s noon EST tomorrow, April 21, but folks in the US can expect announcements from the Japanese feed starting at 8:30 p.m. PST tonight, Friday, April 20. The European announcements will hit at 1 p.m. CET (4 a.m. PST), April 21.

Nintendo hasn’t revealed what it will discuss tonight, but it has left us a trail of clues. CEO Satoru Iwata sent out invitations to this weekend’s Nintendo Direct on 3DS’ Spot Pass, showing him with a giant, suspicious Kirby plushie. Kid Icarus: Uprising‘s Masahiro Sakurai tweeted to expect Uprising news and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy‘s Masanobu Suzui suggested fans should watch the feed, Andriasang translates.

We’ll have our eyes and fingertips ready to roll for any breakout Kirby-Kid-Icarus-Theatrhythm crossover news tonight, because really, it’s not like we had any plans on a Friday night or anything.

Nintendo patents handheld game emulation on ‘low-capability’ systems

Nintendo patents handheld game emulation on ‘low-capability’ systems

Image
Nintendo has been awarded a US patent for emulation of handheld video games on other platforms, something that may not impress anyone playing a Game Boy game through the 3DS Virtual Console right now.

Nintendo applied for the patent back in 2003, for technology to emulate a handheld game system (examples given: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance) on low-powered systems like cell phones and displays in airplane seat backs.

Nintendo may have been exploring options like in-airplane Game Boy games (SNES-based systems were a staple in airplanes for years), but it’s much more likely that the company was attempting to get a footing from which to defend its IPs against other, unauthorized emulation.

Beamdog: No Baldur’s Gate for Wii U, bad Nintendo experience to blame

Beamdog: No Baldur’s Gate for Wii U, bad Nintendo experience to blame

Taking to Twitter once again, Beamdog’s Trent Oster has made it painfully clear that Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition will not be ported to the Wii U. When asked about the possibility, Oster told a fan that “we don’t do Nintendo development,” adding that Beamdog’s “previous experience with Nintendo was enough to ensure there will not be another [Nintendo project].”

Oster’s issues with Nintendo extend from Beamdog’s WiiWare port of MDK 2. A 6,000 unit sales requirement before a developer receives payment – combined with a drawn-out certification process soured Oster’s feelings for WiiWare. He also noted that the Wii’s “exceptionally low attach rate” is “bad for devs” and essentially makes the Wii “a toy.”

We contacted Oster for clarification on Beamdog’s experience with Nintendo, and he tells Joystiq, “It’s pretty simple.”

Nintendo showing Wii U Mario game at E3

Nintendo showing Wii U Mario game at E3

Image
In an article about the Louvre’s 3DS integration, Spanish newspaper El Mundo said that Miyamoto revealed plans to show a new Super Mario game for Wii U at E3. However, without a direct quote, it seemed likely that he had been talking about the Wii U and the (confirmed) 3DS Super Mario game, and the two had become conflated. The other, less likely option, is that Miyamoto had let slip the existence of an unannounced game, which is out of character for anyone at Nintendo.

However, that’s exactly what happened. Eurogamer received confirmation from Nintendo. “In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year’s E3 Expo,” the Nintendo representative told the site. “We’ll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.”

During the last E3, Nintendo showed a Wii U game (above) based on New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It’s possible that demo may have evolved into this new game, or it could be something totally different. All we know at this point is that it’s a “Super Mario Bros. game.”
