Club Nintendo card case is worth the fake money

Club Nintendo card case is worth the fake money

Nintendo’s never sent me a Club Nintendo bonus for review before, and I thought it was kind of odd when one arrived. But I don’t think there’s ever been a Club Nintendo bonus this nice. The 3DS Game Card Case is both beautiful and genuinely useful, holding 18 DS or 3DS games in a case the size of a single DS game box. That’s a rarity among DS game cases.

The transparent case comes with four reversible covers, for a surprisingly versatile look. I grabbed some random DS and 3DS cartridges from my desk, stored them in the case, and took some pictures so you can see for yourself.

Nintendo testing classroom text-to-speech tech with DSis

Nintendo testing classroom text-to-speech tech with DSis

Nintendo and Japanese telecom company NTT are working together on a voice recognition project, aimed at making it easier for students with hearing or other disabilities to keep up in classrooms.

The project, which NHK reports is undergoing trials in Okinawa and Tottori Prefecture, captures instructor speech, converts it to text, and saves it to the cloud while also sending it to devices — like the DSi. That way, students can read along, and have an automatic record of lessons. See it in action in the video on NHK’s site.

The downside to this plan, of course, is that it creates a situation in which a student is expected to be paying very close attention to his or her DS in the back of the classroom — a situation ripe for abuse of the Retro Game Challenge variety.

Nintendo: 3DS sales prove there’s still room for dedicated gaming handhelds

Nintendo: 3DS sales prove there’s still room for dedicated gaming handhelds

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata believes the company has proven that there’s still a market for dedicated gaming handheld hardware like the 3DS. In a briefing — which covered a lot of ground — Iwata revealed the pictured chart above, comparing internal Nintendo weekly sales data of the Wii, DS and 3DS. The executive said that the initial sales pace of the 3DS was “unsatisfactory,” but the device gained momentum after the price cut and the launch of popular titles like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 (and Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) G in Japan).

“Last summer, when the sales pace of the Nintendo 3DS was slow, there were extreme remarks saying, ‘With the penetration of smartphones, will there still be a market for handheld hardware?,’ which was almost equal to ‘Handheld hardware is not necessary anymore,’” Iwata remarked. “I believe we proved that such opinions are incorrect.”

In the end, however, Nintendo did not reach its internal sales goal for the device, despite the 3DS gaining momentum and ending the year with a respectable 15 million unit sales. Iwata says the company could not cover the lack of units sold pre-price drop, which is one of the reasons for its negatively revised financial forecasts.

Nintendo cuts 3DS sales forecast, will report first annual loss

Nintendo cuts 3DS sales forecast, will report first annual loss

Nintendo recently published a note in which it said it will report an annual operating loss of 45 billion yen ($ 575 million) for the December quarter. Analysts had expected the Japan-based gaming giant to report a 4.2 billion yen loss, Reuters said Thursday. The company now expects to ship 10 million Wii consoles, instead of the original 12 million projected, and 14 million units of its portable 3DS gaming consoles, down from 16 million units. ”We had higher expectations for the year-end season, but failed to meet them,” President Satoru Iwata said while speaking to press in Osaka, Japan. Three analysts speaking to Reuters all agreed that Nintendo needs to rethink its strategy and understand that consoles could be a thing of the past. ”Their

Nintendo doesn’t plan on fixing Maka Wahu track in Mario Kart 7

Nintendo doesn’t plan on fixing Maka Wahu track in Mario Kart 7

“Wuhu Island” may sound like an innocuous place, but it’s apparently rife with dirty, dirty cheaters. And that cheating doesn’t sound like it’s stopping anytime soon, with Nintendo telling StickTwiddlers that the island’s “Maka Wuhu” track in Mario Kart 7 won’t be patched or updated to fix the glaring glitch found at the start.

“We are aware that it is possible to navigate a certain part of the track in Wuhu Island in a way that allows a large part of the course to be bypassed,” Nintendo rep Buddy Roemer (no, not that Buddy Roemer) told the site. And though Nintendo acknowledges the glitch, Roemer said there “are no plans to update the game to remove this shortcut.” Not for the moment, at least.

The logic behind not updating the game is perhaps even more bizarre than acknowledging the glitch and refusing to fix it. “Doing so would create an unfair advantage for the users of the original release of the game,” Roemer said, though he did also say the request for a fix has “been added to our records for Mario Kart 7.” We imagine a printout of the email is now sitting in an official three-ring binder somewhere, biding its time next to fan art of Yoshi with a glider.

Buy Dr. Mario, Majora’s Mask with Club Nintendo coins

Buy Dr. Mario, Majora’s Mask with Club Nintendo coins

If you’d rather use your Club Nintendo coins to get actual video games than exclusive swag, you have some new choices, as Nintendo has cycled in some different 3DS eShop, WiiWare, and Wii Virtual Console games for redemption.

For 100 coins, you can get Dr. Mario Online Rx (WiiWare) or the Virtual Console version of Kirby’s Dream Land (3DS). For 150 Coins each, you can get The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (Wii VC) or Dr. Mario Express (3DS). Note that Dr. Mario Express is actually a DSiWare game, but this offer can only be redeemed for a 3DS download code.

If you’re interested in turning your coins (which you got from buying games) into one of these games, you have until January 31. Nintendo will cycle in more games after that point.

[Thanks, Alan]

Fake Miyamoto takes to Twitter and revitalizes Nintendo franchises in Flash

Fake Miyamoto takes to Twitter and revitalizes Nintendo franchises in Flash

As if the saga of Fake Peter Molyneux weren’t an exciting enough Twitter story, today we were introduced to Faux Shigeru Miyamoto, who creates amazing Flash games using classic Nintendo characters. Both Mario and Kirby are lampooned in Flash on the impersonator’s Tumblr site, as well as the legendary creator himself of course. Presumably the totally-not-retiring slash potentially retiring developer isn’t just pulling a fast one on us all, and we very much doubt these are prototypes for that original game he’s making.

Regardless, we suggest one thing before heading into any of the games on said site: turn your volume way, way down. Or up, if you’re extremely hard of hearing, but otherwise, ya know, it’s super loud. Deafeningly so.
