Leaked part points to taller Retina display on next iPhone

Leaked part points to taller Retina display on next iPhone

Apple iPhone 5 Rumor 4-inch Display

Following a report that Apple is currently testing multiple next-generation iPhone prototypes with a taller Retina display, images of a purported front panel from an unreleased iOS device may provide further evidence that Apple is working on a new iPhone with a larger display. MacRumors on Tuesday published two images of what its unnamed source claims to be the front panel from an upcoming refreshed iPod touch. The opening for the display panel is taller than the one on Apple’s current iPod touch, measuring 4.1 inches diagonally. If the part is authentic, it suggests that the next iPod touch — and Apple’s upcoming sixth-generation iPhone — will include a larger Retina display. The Wall Street Journal and Reuters both reported last week that Apple plans to release a new iPhone this year with a display that measures at least 4 inches. Another image of the purported iPod touch front panel follows below.

Google’s Motorola buyout approved by China, expected to close next week (update)

Google’s Motorola buyout approved by China, expected to close next week (update)

Motorola Google droid ears

Google’s purchase of Motorola has been a long time in the making, but it looks like the last hurdle has finally been cleared: the Associated Press is reporting that China regulators have approved the transaction. A Google spokesperson confirmed that the Chinese government cleared the purchase on Saturday; the deal is now expected to close next week.

Update: Since this story broke, the AP as well as the Wall Street Journal have both reported that Chinese regulators attached a major stipulation to their approval: Google must keep Android available for free to anyone who wants to use it for at least the next five years. Presumably, this is to keep Google from closing off Android to run on only Motorola devices.

The US and the EU granted…

Tech companies are looking for ninjas, Jedis, and rockstars; what’s next?

YOUTUBE CREDIT Ninja Unboxing

The tech industry — and especially startup community — has a reputation for not holding too much regard for the corporate hierarchies of old (just look at Valve, a company that says it doesn’t have a single manager), and one place where that shows are the titles that companies hand out. According to job search website Indeed.com, listings containing the word “ninja” have increased by about 2756 percent since May 2006 (up from just 18 to a current total of 469). Other terms like “Jedi” and “rockstar” have also seen a large bump. The whole thing is just a way for companies to show that they have got some attitude and pizazz, instead of just posting a listing asking for a boing old coder. Of course, with such an increase in the usage of…

Apple’s next iPhone may feature one of Steve Jobs’s last designs

Apple’s next iPhone may feature one of Steve Jobs’s last designs

Apple iPhone 5 Design

Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone may be one of the last products unveiled by the Cupertino, California-based technology giant that was designed by Steve Jobs. The company’s late co-founder and chief executive worked very closely on the retooled iPhone before his untimely passing last October, Bloomberg reports. The news organization also reiterates earlier claims that the next-generation iPhone will feature a larger display than the 3.5-inch panel utilized by its predecessors. BGR exclusively reported last year that Apple plans to launch a completely redesigned iPhone this fall that features a new antenna system and a new case, likely comprised of glass and aluminum. Apple’s sixth iPhone is also expected to include a larger 4-inch display and 4G LTE connectivity.

Epic Mickey 2 and ‘The Power of Next Gen’

Epic Mickey 2 and ‘The Power of Next Gen’

Epic Mickey’s first foray was a Wii-exclusive affair. This time around, Junction Point is bringing Mickey’s epic-ness to what it’s calling “next-gen consoles.” We might call them “7-year-old consoles,” but, well, Mickey’s best bud is from 1920, so we can appreciate the anachronism at play here.

Lionhead listing for ‘MMO-like title for next generation consoles’

Lionhead listing for ‘MMO-like title for next generation consoles’

Image

Lionhead’s latest job post brings up two salient points:

  • That listing for a multiplayer level designer with “a deep understanding of online multiplayer games” may encompass more than a simple FPS title with online capabilities.
  • Microsoft could be looking to bring MMOs to its console market in a big way.

The most recent want ad, spotted by Superannuation and since removed, described the potential game as an “MMO-like title” and an original IP for the “future generation of platforms.” It “will be an RPG-based game with a radical new take on how co-operative and multiplayer gameplay feeds into the experience, while blending online and single-player into one complete experience,” the listing read, as reported by MCV.

The title “will have a complex progression system, multiple routes through the campaign and an MMO-like multiplayer experience that will affect the outcome of the player experience, and many other attributes surrounding their profile (such as the environment and the outcome of certain actions).” Superannuation notes that it was labeled as a multithreaded RPG with four-player co-op.

Lionhead’s specific use of “MMO-like” and the description’s emphasis on a “radical new” genre leaves the game’s direction open to interpretation, while nodding at the style of former creative lead Peter Molyneux.

MMOs can be a big gamble, even for an established studio, and especially if its audience is tethered to a single console unfamiliar with the genre as a whole. Good luck, Lionhead. You may need it.

Rumor: Mass Effect 3′s next DLC is the Rebellion Multiplayer Expansion

Rumor: Mass Effect 3′s next DLC is the Rebellion Multiplayer Expansion

The next DLC for Mass Effect 3 won’t be the “Extended Cut” DLC planned for this summer, if a pulled listing on Sony’s Hong Kong site is to be believed. The next piece of content will apparently be focused on multiplayer.

The Rebellion Multiplayer Expansion is a series of multiplayer maps and other goodies. “The Rebellion Multiplayer Expansion opens two new fronts against the Reapers: Firebase Jade’s jungle reservoir and Firebase Goddess on Thessia,” Kotaku reports. “In-game reinforcement packs now include three new weapons as well as equipment, consumables, and six new classes: Quarian Engineer and Infiltrator, Vorcha Soldier and Sentinel, Phoenix Adept and Vanguard.” The listing has since been pulled from Sony’s site, so we’re unable to confirm the contents of the listing.

We’ve contacted EA and BioWare for comment and will update as they respond.

Apple’s next iPhone will have a 4-inch display, WSJ says

Apple’s next iPhone will have a 4-inch display, WSJ says

Apple iPhone 5 Rumor 4-Inch Screen

Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone handset will reportedly feature a larger display that measures “at least 4 inches diagonally.” Mirroring numerous earlier reports, The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday cited multiple anonymous sources in claiming that Apple’s next iPhone will include a new larger display. The Journal adds that panel orders have been placed, however, and that Apple has tasked LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display with supplying the new screens. A recent report claimed the next-generation iPhone would utilize the same 3.5-inch screen found on Apple’s iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, however multiple earlier reports suggested that the new iPhone will finally receive a larger 4-inch Retina display and 4G LTE compatibility. BGR exclusively reported in December that Apple will launch a completely redesigned iPhone this fall that will include a redesigned antenna system, likely alongside a new aluminum case and 4-inch display.
