Three more playable characters for new Double Fine game

Three more playable characters for new Double Fine game

Double Fine is building up an intriguing cast of characters for its mysterious, bone-themed game. First we had the monk, the hillbilly and the time traveler, and now we have three more random occupations to ponder: the adventurer, the scientist and the knight.

Double Fine’s Ron Gilbert posted images of each of these characters on his blog, Grumpy Gamer. The only other information gleaned from the reveals appears to be that the knight isn’t exactly Sir Bravery, but we could have gotten that from the little shaking knees in his picture.

CableWiFi to offer more than 50,000 free access points to cable subscribers

CableWiFi to offer more than 50,000 free access points to cable subscribers

CableWifi Hotspots

Five major U.S. cable companies have teamed up to offer more than 50,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots to subscribers. The service will be known as “CableWiFi,” and will be offered to customers of Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable. The service initially launched in New York City and central Florida earlier May, and is set to expand to other markets in the coming months. “This effort adds great value to our high speed Internet customers by providing free wireless Internet access on all of their WiFi enabled devices in our markets and additional areas across the country,” said Nomi Bergman, President of Bright House Networks. The joint press release follows below.

Major U.S. Cable Companies Join Forces on WiFi

Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable Will Share Access to over 50,000 Hotspots, Expand WiFi Availability and Simplify Access for their High Speed Internet Customers

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable today announce that they will enable each other’s high-speed Internet customers to access their metro WiFi networks, totaling over 50,000 hotspots. To simplify access, a new network name, “CableWiFi”, has been created for subscribers to use when accessing the WiFi hotspots outside their home market. The first implementation is already complete as Bright House Networks and Cablevision launched “CableWiFi” alongside their branded WiFi networks in the New York City area and central Florida earlier this month. Over the next few months, the “CableWiFi” network name will be added by each of the cable companies to their branded WiFi hotspots.

“This effort adds great value to our high speed Internet customers by providing free wireless Internet access on all of their WiFi enabled devices in our markets and additional areas across the country,” said Nomi Bergman, President of Bright House Networks.

“We believe that WiFi is a superior approach to mobile data, and that cable providers are best positioned to build the highest-capacity national network offering customers fast and reliable Internet connections when away from their home or business broadband service,” said Kristin Dolan, Cablevision’s senior executive vice president of product management and marketing. “We’ve built an extensive WiFi network in our own service area, and see real value and potential in other leading providers joining with us to extend that connectivity to major markets across the country.”

Dave Watson, Chief Operating Officer of Comcast Cable added, “Mobility is an increasingly important part of our Xfinity services product roadmap. WiFi technology, coupled with our agreements with Verizon Wireless, are two significant ways we are executing on our strategy to deliver the best in- and out-of-home communications experience for our customers.”

“The way customers are using our service continues to evolve,” said Jill Campbell, Cox Communications COO. “This is a new area of opportunity that we need to explore.”

“We have long been the leading providers of high-speed internet services in our customers’ homes. Through our rollout of WiFi and the benefits of this collaboration we greatly increase the value and reach of our high-speed internet service, providing access to broadband outside the home and in cities across the country,” said Rob Marcus, President and COO of Time Warner Cable.

When traveling outside their home markets, high-speed Internet subscribers of the participating companies will look for the “CableWiFi” network and through a simple sign-on process connect using the same credentials as when accessing their providers’ WiFi networks. In the coming months, users will be able to have their devices auto-connect to the Internet when located in any of the “Cable WiFi” hotspots.

The participating cable operators currently offer more than 50,000 WiFi hotspots located in New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area, Los Angeles, Tampa, Orlando, and Philadelphia. The operators plan to continue to grow the number of WiFi hotspots and expand into several additional cities. The network has both indoor and outdoor WiFi hotspots located in popular, high traffic locations, such as shopping districts, cafes, malls, arenas, restaurants, parks and beaches. Subscribers will be able to find the nearest WiFi hotspots by visiting the WiFi homepage of their current cable provider or going to www.cablewifi.com.

This is the largest and most inclusive WiFi sharing effort among cable operators to date. In early 2010, Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable entered into an agreement allowing their customers in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Connecticut to access WiFi hotspots offered by each operator in these areas.

Nintendo’s got more than a few ways to watch its E3 2012 press conference

What will you be doing on June 5 at noon ET? Nintendo sure hopes your answer to that question revolves around its impending E3 2012 press conference, and it’s got a whole bevy of options should that be the case. Beyond partnering with Viacom to broadcast the show live (and commercial-free) on Spike TV and MTV2 (there’s still an MTV2?!?!), Nintendo will offer the conference via internet on its usual E3 site.

Nintendo’s E3 presentation this year will focus on its next home console, the Wii U, though we’ll no doubt hear a few new nuggets about the 3DS. As always, we’re hoping for a triumphant return from Ravi Drums. Don’t keep breaking our hearts, Nintendo! Let Mr. Drums free!

Sony and Microsoft are also streaming their respective press conferences; more info can be found on each here and here.

Hasselblad discounts several pro cameras, still a lot more than your average Canon

Hasselblad discounts several pro cameras, still a lot more than your average Canon

via cdn3.sbnation.com

Hasselblad — the maker of professional grade, medium-format cameras — has reduced the pricing of its H series cameras in an effort to appeal to a larger audience of creative professionals. The camera maker is discounting the H4D-31 and the H4D-60 by approximately 20 percent, which puts them at $ 11,995 and $ 30,995, respectively. Both have medium-format sensors, but the H4D-31 clocks in at 31-megapixels and the H4D-60 comes in at a whopping 60 megapixels

Hasselblad is also dropping the price of a few other models as well, like the H4D-50, H4D-50MS, H4D200-MS, and the CFV-50. Make no mistake, the company’s “reduced” pricing still puts this gear firmly outside the reach of mere mortals. If you’re a professional photographer, though —…

‘Inexact’ computer chip is 15 times more efficient than current models

‘Inexact’ computer chip is 15 times more efficient than current models

inexact computer chip

A research team has managed to build a computer chip that it claims is 15 times more efficient than current chips — and all it has to do is make a few mistakes. The so-called “inexact” chip allows its processing components to make the occasional error, which researchers have found both cuts down energy use and boosts performance. The design of the chip uses a technique called pruning, which removes some of its rarely used components, and has the added benefit of making the chip even smaller. The concept has been in development since 2003, but now the team has built an actual working prototype.

“I am delighted that these working chips have met and even exceeded our expectations,” project leader Krishna Palem said. The research was a…

There’s no better way to flaunt your mastery of the art of having $ 55 than with the Kingdom Hearts 3D “Mark of Mastery” edition. The newly announced special edition comes with a clear 3DS case and a set of art cards that look like they can be slipped into said case, and five AR cards to unlock in-game Dream Eaters. All of this comes in a big box with a magnetic clasp.

This edition shows one of the advantages of portable games: the limited edition boxes don’t cost quite as much as those for console games.

Nielsen’s ‘top five smartphone apps’ data raises more questions than it answers

Nielsen’s ‘top five smartphone apps’ data raises more questions than it answers

Apple iTunes App Store Field of Icons

Mobile marketing continues to grow in importance for advertisers, and as such Nielsen’s made mobile usage statistics a major part of its data reporting. Its latest report focuses on how consumers use apps on their smartphones, and amid some relatively unsurprising statistics (the number of iOS and Android users in the US more than doubled in the last year, from 38 million to 84 million, for example) was a note on the top five apps smartphone owners use. Somewhat surprisingly, the top apps were Facebook, YouTube, Android Market, Google Search, and Gmail — the same as Nielsen saw last year. While Facebook and YouTube aren’t terribly surprising, the other three apps are rather unexpected — the sizable population of iOS users obviously…

38 Studios, Schilling ask Rhode Island for more money; state officials freeze

38 Studios, Schilling ask Rhode Island for more money; state officials freeze

Image

Today’s emergency meeting by Rhode Island officials to determine what they are going to do about Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios has concluded with officials freezing like deer in headlights. Nothing happened.

Rhode Island’s Economic Development Corporation will take no immediate action to aid the developer, following a closed-door meeting attended by Governor Lincon Chafee and Schilling, who asked for additional help to save the company. Schilling refused to answer press inquiries and officials wouldn’t declare how much money the studio is seeking.

“How do we avoid throwing good money after bad?” Chafee is quoted as saying after the three-hour emergency meeting finished.

If the studio doesn’t receive assistance, it appears Rhode Island taxpayers may very be on the hook for the $ 75 million 38 Studios loan that, after interest, would require paying back $ 112.6 million through 2020.
