3DS sells over 6 million units in Japan

Image
The 3DS has crossed six million units sold in Japan, according to Enterbrain data reported by Enterbrain-owned magazine Famitsu. The last news about Japanese 3DS sales milestones came when it passed 5 million after less than a year, more quickly than any system to date. The system has sold 17.13 million units worldwide as of March 31.

Regional sales totals are not available for the 3DS’s main competitor system the PlayStation Vita, which was released in Japan about ten months after the 3DS and two months later worldwide. However, the 1.8 million systems sold to date worldwide provide contrast.

The 3DS suffered similarly slow sales in the period before its price drop and holiday releases; as of April of last year, it was at 3.6 million worldwide. Which is slow, even if it is twice the Vita’s current life-to-date total.

Apple’s Tim Cook top-paid US CEO of 2011 with $378 million, says WSJ

Apple’s Tim Cook top-paid US CEO of 2011 with $378 million, says WSJ

tim cook apple

According to the Wall Street Journal‘s annual survey of CEO pay in the US, Tim Cook of Apple was by far the most handsomely compensated chief executive last year. He took home $ 378 million in 2011, almost all of which came from a grant of one million shares awarded last August. Cook’s base salary is $ 900,000, along with annual incentives to the same amount — almost insignificant next to his stock options, but a lot higher than the $ 1 that Steve Jobs famously drew.

Compensation tied to Apple’s performance

There are a couple of catches, though. Apple considers the share package compensation for the next ten years, so we might not see Cook riding quite so high on the list next time around. The package also comes with a set of restrictions…

38 Studios successfully pays $1.125 million to Rhode Island

38 Studios successfully pays $1.125 million to Rhode Island

38 Studios’s $ 1.125 million check to the state of Rhode Island has cleared, governor Lincoln Chafee announced during a press conference this afternoon, thus fulfilling the first required payment on the studio’s loan from the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation.

Rhode Island is changing its legislation on tax breaks, closing loopholes pertaining to state funds being used for motion-picture endeavors, Chafee said. The state’s interest lies in protecting the taxpayers, balanced with keeping 38 Studios solvent, since “taxpayers have had a very generous deal for 38 studios,” Chafee said.

“It’s time for them to go out and get private capital funding,” Chafee said. “That’s the deal. It’s a generous deal, but stick to it.”

Rhode Island officials believe that the total of the $ 49 million loaned to 38 has been spent. Chafee said that until late April, meetings with 38 suggested that they would make their May payment. “I want to make sure we’re doing everything possible to make sure 38 doesn’t fail,” Chafee said. “We’re in deep.” Everything possible except giving them more money.”There’s not going to be any money from the state. They’re not coming here for easy money.”

According to Chafee, “Basically, the access to private capital hasn’t materialized.”

38 Studios’ next payment is a debt service payment due November 1 of $ 2.6 million, and Rhode Island officials believe the studio will have the capital to cover it.

38 Studios will then owe $ 12.6 million in full annual debt service in 2013, and “that’s on their dime,” officials said.

Chafee said he recognized the risk involved in starting a new gaming studio, but the state would have benefited greatly from the studio’s “huge success” had it done well.

“I said from the beginning that it was a risky enterprise,” Chafee said. Regarding how 38 Studios will function if it doesn’t have the funds to pay its employees, Chafee reiterated, “Again, these are the ramifications of being in a risky business.”

Chafee doesn’t plan on taking a gamble of this nature again: “Never, never ever. Not under my watch,” he said.

Galaxy S III preorders approach 10 million

Galaxy S III preorders approach 10 million

Samsung Galaxy S III Preorders

Samsung said earlier this year that is hoped to sell 10 million units of its smartphone-tablet hybrid, the Galaxy Note, in 2012. End-user sales reached 5 million units in March, putting Samsung well on its way to achieving the lofty goal. If 10 million is a magic number for Samsung, the company is undoubtedly pleased with pre-sales performance of its next-generation flagship smartphone, which may reach 10 million units before the smartphone even hits store shelves. South Korea-based newspaper Korea Economic Daily on Friday cited an unnamed Samsung official in reporting that carrier preorders of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III have already hit 9 million units. Reuters, which relayed the report, notes that Samsung’s South Korean factory is currently building the Galaxy S III at full capacity of 5 million units per month, according to the paper. Samsung’s Galaxy S III will launch in Germany on May 29th before rolling out in other markets around the world. The flagship smartphone is expected to begin launching on carriers in the United States this summer.

Samsung Galaxy S III garners over 9 million pre-orders worldwide

galaxy s iii

You might have heard that Samsung has a new phone coming out soon, but even if you’re not planning to buy the Galaxy S III it seems like the phone’s success is all but assured. An unnamed Samsung official, speaking to the Korea Economic Daily, said that the new flagship handset has had over 9 million units preordered worldwide. This total includes devices sold by more than 290 carriers in 145 countries.

Like the Galaxy S II, the III will be sold in a huge number of localized models, and we’ve already seen variation in the processors and amount of RAM used. The early pre-order success, however, suggests that a lot of people are excited for the phone whatever form it takes. It goes on sale in Europe on May 29th, with a North American…

Trials Evolution moves half a million in just three weeks

Trials Evolution moves half a million in just three weeks

Image

Screaming at monitors while attempting to make just one more crushingly difficult checkpoint is apparently a pastime shared by many, many gamers. This week, Ubisoft revealed that the latest Trials franchise entry – Trials Evolution – sold approximately 500,000 units since its launch in mid-April.

Sure, it’s no Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, but half a million sales in less than a month is quite impressive for a title on Xbox Live Arcade. How impressive, you ask? Well, we’d love to tell you, but Microsoft doesn’t release sales numbers for XBLA games. Those rascals! For context’s sake, though, we’d point out that it took just over a year for the first Trials game on XBLA to hit 1 million units sold. We get the feeling it’ll take a bit less time with Evolution.

In the same slide, RedLynx is called out as having many brands with “great multiplatform potential.” A quick glance at RedLynx’s catalog confirms our suspicion that Trials is indeed the Finnish studio’s biggest “brand.” How about that!

38 Studios whiffed last loan payment, received nearly $50 million from Rhode Island thus far

38 Studios whiffed last loan payment, received nearly $50 million from Rhode Island thus far

The hits keep coming for ex-baseballer Curt Schillings’ 38 Studios. The company reportedly missed its latest loan payment of $ 1.125 million to the state of Rhode Island on May 1, effectively defaulting its $ 75 million loan. WPRI spoke with Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox who confirmed the news.

The loan’s facilitator, Rhode Island’s Economic Development Corporation, called an “emergency meeting” for tomorrow morning, wherein it will discuss “an unexpected occurrence that requires immediate action to protect the public regarding the 38 Studios financing.” As reported earlier, if 38 Studios were to fully default on its loan obligations to investors supplying the loan via the Rhode Island government, the responsibility would fall to Rhode Island’s taxpayers – to the tune of $ 112.6 million.

Of the $ 75 million borrowed by 38 Studios from the state of Rhode Island, $ 49.8 million was received by the studio as of March 15, WPRI reports. Given that, it seems worrisome at best that 38 Studios was unable to fulfill its recent payment of $ 1.125 million. 38 Studios is working on the Kingdoms of Amalur MMO – the game was originally promised for a launch ahead of 2013, when 38 Studios is set to begin paying back bondholders on its $ 75 million loan. It’s unclear what stage its MMO is at, and 38 Studios hasn’t made a public statement regarding its recent issues.

If 38 Studios collapses, Rhode Island taxpayers owe $112.6 million

If 38 Studios collapses, Rhode Island taxpayers owe $112.6 million

Image

With Rhode Island politicians and 38 Studios silent on the precarious financial condition of the developer, the potential cost of the doomsday scenario to taxpayers has come to light. WPRI reports that if 38 Studios can’t pay the bonds it received from the state, taxpayers will actually be responsible for paying back $ 112.6 million through 2020.

The math works a little something this this: The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation borrowed $ 75 million from private investors for 38 Studios, at interest rates between 6 – 7.75 percent, with the expectation that 38 Studios would pay it back with the sale of games.

For the record, 38 Studios has only launched one product, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, which it only had due to its acquisition of developer Big Huge Games. Big Huge Games was already working on an RPG prior to the sale, but altered it to fit the Amalur world after the purchase.

If 38 Studios can’t pay, the governor is required to ask the General Assembly to repay bondholders.

Game industry sources tell Joystiq that if 38 Studios does collapse, despite this specific deal having been widely criticized from the start, it could have wider repercussions for the industry trying to obtain tax breaks in other states. The silence out of Providence right now is deafening.

Minecraft XBLA sold 1 million copies in five days

Yep, that’s a 1 followed by six 0s and two – count ‘em, two - commas. Minecraft on Xbox 360 has sold 1 million copies since its launch on May 9, Microsoft announced today. Minecraft runs $ 20 a pop on XBLA, making its initial revenue bump against $ 20 million, supposedly split between Mojang, port developer 4J Studios and Microsoft.

Players have so far spent more than 5.2 million hours mining on XBLA, played 4 million multiplayer sessions and clocked more than 2.4 million multiplayer hours, Microsoft reported. Original Minecraft developer Markus “Notch” Persson reacted to the news in what we think is an appropriate manner: “Wow.”

At $2.78 million, this Leica is the world’s most expensive camera

At $2.78 million, this Leica is the world’s most expensive camera

Photo

A vintage prototype 35mm film Leica camera has sold for €2.16 million (around $ 2.78 million) at the WestLicht Photographica auction in Vienna, making it the world’s most expensive camera. The Leica Null-Serie (also known as the 0-Series) camera was one of 25 produced in 1923 for testing, only 12 of which are known to have survived to this day.

The Null-Serie was the precursor to Leica’s first commercially-available 35mm camera, which was released two years later. Bidding started at €300,000, and the camera had an estimated price range of €600,000 – 800,000. After just four minutes, however, the auction ended with a winning bid of €1.8 million (the final price of €2.16 million includes the buyer’s premium). The sale smashed the…
