Microsoft sees Windows 8 as ‘rebirth’

Microsoft Windows 8 Steve Ballmer

Microsoft is betting big on its upcoming Windows 8 operating system, which looks to bridge the gap between smartphones, tablets and desktop computers. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on Tuesday called the operating system a “rebirth” of the Windows brand and described it as the ”deepest, broadest and most impactful” Windows software ever created, Agence France-Presse reported. “It’s really, in some senses, a dawning of the rebirth of MS Windows… It’s certainly the most important piece of work we’ve done,” he said at a forum in Seoul, South Korea, adding that an estimated 500 million users will have Windows 8 on next year. The CEO went on to promise the “best economic opportunity” for device makers and app developers who adopt the company’s newest operating system. Microsoft’s Windows 8 is rumored to launch in October, and BGR reviewed Microsoft’s Windows 8 Consumer Preview earlier this year.

Windows 8 boots ‘too quickly’ to be interrupted, Microsoft adding a new ‘boot options’ menu

Windows 8 boots ‘too quickly’ to be interrupted, Microsoft adding a new ‘boot options’ menu

Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Did you know that an SSD-equipped Windows 8 PC can boot up in under seven seconds? Watch the video below if you don’t believe it, Microsoft has really optimized the hell out of the startup operations of its next OS — although that has come at a somewhat amusing cost: you no longer get enough time to interrupt the boot process. The current ability to press F8 while your PC is powering up and the ever-familiar BIOS menu prompt of “Press F2 to enter setup” will both be missing from Windows 8 computers, simply because the hardware and software have advanced to such an extent as to leave users with too little time to access them.

Chris Clark, program manager at Microsoft’s User Experience team, notes in a Building Windows 8 blog post that…

Microsoft says 350 million Windows 7 devices will ship by the end of 2012

Microsoft Windows 7 Sales Estimates

Despite the fact that Windows 8 is expected to launch in October, Microsoft still has high hopes for its Windows 7 operating system. The software giant predicts that 350 million Windows 7 devices will ship by the end of 2012, Bloomberg reported. “It makes Windows the most popular single system,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at a forum in Seoul, South Korea, although he didn’t provide any figures for comparison. Windows 7 was released in October 2009 and within two years, the operating system surpassed Windows XP to become the world’s most popular OS.

Microsoft wins ban on Motorola Android devices from the ITC

Microsoft wins ban on Motorola Android devices from the ITC

Motorola Razr

We saw this week just how powerful an import ban can be as US Customs officials enforced an ITC exclusion order delaying the importation of new HTC One X and Evo 4G LTE smartphones into the country, and it looks like Motorola Mobility could be facing a similar fate. On Friday, the full commission of the ITC sided with Microsoft in ruling that Motorola Android devices infringe US patent no. 6,370,566, issuing an order that could keep products like the Razr, Atrix, Xoom tablet, and several other models off US shelves in the future. The ’566 patent claims priority back to 1998 and covers appointment scheduling using email addresses and contact information, and synchronizing those events across phones and PCs.

Motorola must post a bond of 33…

Microsoft Kinect transformed into surgical assistant

Microsoft Kinect transformed into surgical assistant

Microsoft Kinect Surgery

Microsoft’s Kinect motion and voice-based controller accessory was launched with gaming in mind, but researchers have taken the technology in a number of different directions. German researchers transformed the Kinect into an interactive augmented reality X-ray machine, and Microsoft Research is now in the process of trialing the use of its Kinect sensor as a surgical assistant.

On May 8th, a surgeon at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospital in London used a custom Kinect installation to browse through medical images and real-time X-rays while repairing an aneurism in a patient’s aorta, NewScientist reports. The system created by Microsoft Research allows surgeons to call up images or perform a number of other tasks without assistance and without having to touch anything, thus avoiding any potential contamination.

“Up until now, I’d been calling out across the room to one of our technical assistants, asking them to manipulate the image, rotate one way, rotate the other, pan up, pan down, zoom in, zoom out,” says Tom Carrell, a consultant vascular surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’. With the Kinect, the surgeon says he had “very intuitive control.”

Carrell is eager to continue trials with the system. ”I thought this was going to be a lot more awkward to start off with, but I was very pleased with the way it went today.”

Microsoft reveals Windows 8 desktop UI changes, drops Aero Glass

Microsoft reveals Windows 8 desktop UI changes, drops Aero Glass

WIndows 8 desktop UI

Microsoft has revealed that it has made some big changes to its desktop UI for Windows 8, which includes moving away from Aero Glass — the UI first introduced with Vista. According to the company, this means visual changes that include “flattening surfaces, removing reflections, and scaling back distracting gradients.”

Despite all of these changes with the interface, the company doesn’t appear to be worried about the issue of “learnability.” Instead, Microsoft believes that with a little help it won’t take long for users to adapt to the new operating system. “We will help people get off on the right foot,” the company explained in a blog post, “and we have confidence that people will quickly find the new paradigms to be…

Microsoft PSA: upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5 if you want to keep using Marketplace

Nokia Lumia 900 marketplace (912px)

Microsoft is putting the finishing touches on its work to require Windows Phone 7.5 to buy, download, or update apps from the Marketplace. The company previously warned in April that users would need to upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5 or face a life without new or updated apps, but it’s reminding users again this week that the Marketplace changes are nearing. There’s no exact date on when the Marketplace will be restricted to Windows Phone 7.5, but Microsoft says it will remind everyone again on the day the requirement begins.

“A handful of folks” haven’t upgraded yet according to Microsoft, but judging by handful of the comments on Microsoft’s latest blog post some might be holding off due to the disappearing keyboard bug. “This…
