Sidecar offers in-call media sharing, free Wi-Fi calls to US and Canada

Sidecar 2-shot

Sidecar is launching a new app on iOS and taking it out of beta on Android today. It’s an ambitious attempt to rethink what CEO Rob Williams calls the most common and least innovative icon on a smartphone’s screen: the phone app. The basic premise is simple: when you’re on a call with another Sidecar user, you’ll have large buttons to instantly share video, pictures, contact information, or location information with the person on the other end.

Those features aren’t necessarily enough to bring in users — especially since they require people on both ends to install the app. To help ease the way, Sidecar is offering a carrot to potential users: free Wi-Fi calling to any number in the US and Canada. That’s the carrot, but the…

Rumor: Elder Scrolls Online media revealed

Rumor: Elder Scrolls Online media revealed

Image

We know next to nothing about Elder Scrolls Online at this point, but we may have our first glimpse of what the game will look like. A smattering of images, including concept art and what appear to be either screenshots or target renderings, have been published by All Games Beta. Elder Scrolls fans will certainly spot a few familiar elements, notably a flame Atronach.

Windows 8 drops DVD playback, only available with paid Media Center upgrade

Windows 8 drops DVD playback, only available with paid Media Center upgrade

optical disc dvd cd pile stock 1024

You might have heard that Windows 8 won’t come with Media Center, but that’s not the only missing multimedia piece of the puzzle. This week, Microsoft revealed that the new operating system won’t have any kind of DVD playback, unless you specifically purchase Media Center or use third-party DVD software.

At the official Building Windows 8 blog, the company justifies the move by claiming that television and DVD use on personal computers is “in sharp decline,” and says that it would have to spend “a significant amount in royalties” to offer support for optical media going forward. Microsoft says online media is the focus for Windows 8, and will include H.264, VC-1, MP4, AAC, WMA, MP3, PCM and (as announced earlier today) Dolby Digital…

One-third of Americans using social media to share health information, survey finds

One-third of Americans using social media to share health information, survey finds

Twitter Stethoscope Box

Doctors may be rightfully skeptical of internet-based diagnoses, but patients are increasingly using social media in a variety of other ways when they get sick. A survey of about 1,000 US adults by consulting house PwC Health Industries found that a third of them had shared health information or solicited advice through social media, including Facebook and Twitter. As you might expect, that number was far higher for younger adults: 80 percent of those 18 to 24 said they would be willing to share health information over social media (even if they hadn’t necessarily done it), compared to 45 percent of those 45 to 64. Even so, that’s a large group across the board. A third of consumers said they would even be willing to have social media…

Chicago police exploit social media to crack down on delicious food trucks

Chicago police exploit social media to crack down on delicious food trucks

sweet ride food

Police in Chicago have begun cracking down on illegally-stationed food trucks, allegedly using some of the same social media tools that many vendors rely upon. As the Chicago Sun-Times reports, several truck operators have reported a surge in ticketing and fines over the past month, with some claiming that police show up within just minutes of their arrival.

This has led some to conclude that authorities are tracking the city’s trucks on Facebook and Twitter, which many vendors use to announce their location on a given day. Lupita Kuri, owner of the Sweet Ride bakery, said she was ticketed one day before even serving her first customer. “You can’t get me for premeditated selling of a cupcake,” Kuri protested. A spokesman for the police…

Sony announces Nasne, a TV tuner and media box to bring the company’s ecosystem together

Sony announces Nasne, a TV tuner and media box to bring the company’s ecosystem together

nasne

Sony has announced Nasne, a digital media box that will connect to several of the company’s products. Many of the features are taken from the similarly-named Torne, a PlayStation 3 TV tuner accessory that uses the console’s hard drive to record shows. Nasne has a 500GB hard drive of its own, however, and will extend deeper into the Sony ecosystem by letting Sony Tablet and Xperia phone users access recorded content when on the same home network. There will also be an app for the PS Vita, which currently offers limited streaming ability with Torne, and VAIO users will be able to watch and record TV broadcasts from their computers.

Unlike the Apple TV-esque Torne, Nasne is designed to stand vertically, and its curved shape is reminiscent…

New Roku HD media streamer reportedly reaches stores, priced at $60

New Roku HD media streamer reportedly reaches stores, priced at $60

Roku HD seen in stores

Last month we got a glimpse of a new Roku device thanks to an FCC filing, and it appears the miniature media streamer is now landing on store shelves. Zatz Not Funny reportedly found one of the devices — named simply the Roku HD — at an unnamed brick-and-mortar retailer. Said to be priced at $ 60, the device offers 720p streaming, HDMI outputs, and also brings back the composite audio and video connectors that had been dropped from previous iterations of Roku’s products. It’s still not quite clear what the company’s strategy is with the new device; it has yet to appear on either Amazon or Roku’s own site, and the naming puts it at a distinct marketing disadvantage when compared to the rest of the Roku 2 line (not to mention the…

Time study says ‘digital natives’ switch between devices and platforms every two minutes, aren’t as emotionally engaged with media

Time study says ‘digital natives’ switch between devices and platforms every two minutes, aren’t as emotionally engaged with media

Digital native (SHUTTERSTOCK)

A new study revealed by Time indicates that those who grew up with mobile tech are restless and emotionally detached consumers, switching between TVs, magazines, tablets, smartphones, or channels within platforms about 27 times an hour while experiencing “fewer highs and lows of emotional response.” The study says that these “digital natives” use media to “regulate their mood,” and that as soon as they’re bored or tired, they shift their attention elsewhere. And while a cursory glance at any vacuous, smartphone-equipped person might be enough to declare the findings plausible, Time’s study appears to be more scientific: researchers used biometric monitoring and point of view video capture to monitor people’s daily media consumption…
