Nokia removes Skype from Marketplace on Lumia 610, blames poor user experience

Only weeks after saying Skype “worked well” on the Lumia 610, Nokia Hong Kong announced today that it has decided to remove Skype from the Windows Phone Marketplace on the device, because the app’s experience doesn’t live up to the company’s expectations. The likeliest culprit seems to be the 256MB of RAM inside the Lumia 610 — the Skype app listing says it requires 512MB of memory. Nokia Hong Kong released an official statement on the matter, as reported by welovewp.hk:

Nokia attaches great importance to the launch of products and services to bring the user experience, so even if the Skype Windows Phone version on the Nokia Lumia 610 does, but after intensive testing, we found the user experience does not guarantee to Nokia and Skype…

Bing API now available from Azure Marketplace, 5,000 searches per month for free

Bing API now available from Azure Marketplace, 5,000 searches per month for free

Photo

Microsoft has announced a free tier of 5,000 searches per month as part of its move to monetize the Bing search API. Microsoft told us that the new tier was “thanks to the feedback and interest from the developer community.” The pricing structure should come as a relief to many sites, which were understandably upset when Bing first announced it would charge for the API.

Since its launch, the API has been entirely free to use, whereas Google charges sites that use more than 100 searches per day. After a site uses its free quota, pricing starts at $ 14 or $ 20 per month for 10,000 data or web searches. Google charges $ 5 per 1000 queries over the 100 per day limit. The two services deal with their free quotas differently, so it’s difficult to…

Microsoft PSA: upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5 if you want to keep using Marketplace

Microsoft PSA: upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5 if you want to keep using Marketplace

Nokia Lumia 900 marketplace (912px)

Microsoft is putting the finishing touches on its work to require Windows Phone 7.5 to buy, download, or update apps from the Marketplace. The company previously warned in April that users would need to upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5 or face a life without new or updated apps, but it’s reminding users again this week that the Marketplace changes are nearing. There’s no exact date on when the Marketplace will be restricted to Windows Phone 7.5, but Microsoft says it will remind everyone again on the day the requirement begins.

“A handful of folks” haven’t upgraded yet according to Microsoft, but judging by handful of the comments on Microsoft’s latest blog post some might be holding off due to the disappearing keyboard bug. “This…

Xbox Marketplace renames Obsidian’s South Park as ‘South Park: The Stick of Truth’

Xbox Marketplace renames Obsidian’s South Park as ‘South Park: The Stick of Truth’

Image

Not only has an Xbox Marketplace listing for Obsidian’s South Park: The Game turned up with an astoundingly erroneous release date of today, but it’s also revealed what appears to be the game’s actual title: South Park: The Stick of Truth.

None of the other assets in the listing (screenshots, description, etc) are particularly revealing, although the box art and banner do look exceedingly legit. Obviously, none of this is official until Obsidian or THQ make some sort of announcement, which hasn’t happened yet.

It might be possible that some rogue Microsoft employee, in a nefarious attempt to cause mayhem and wanton confusion, manufactured false artworks and an inaccurate Marketplace listing, but where’s the motive? Was he spurned by a former lover? Did he do it for the money, for the fame? Nope, sorry, this screenplay just isn’t coherent enough. Get out of my office.

Windows Mobile Marketplace shutdown pushed back to May 17th

Windows Mobile Marketplace shutdown pushed back to May 17th

Motorola q9c windows mobile 6

Microsoft had previously told users still rocking classic Windows Mobile smartphones that the marketplace for those devices would be closing down on May 9th. Today it’s circulating an email pegging the date as May 17th and the company’s notice page confirms the date. Users can and should update any apps they’ve purchased from the store before that day, but unfortunately those apps will become unavailable if the device is hard reset or otherwise wiped clean. If that happens, you’ll be on your own to contact the individual developers who created your apps one by one to make your case for getting it directly.

The extra 8 days are perhaps cold comfort to those gripping legacy Windows Mobile devices — but at this point, well, there’s a darn…

Zune Desktop software will no longer be able to access Marketplace

Zune Desktop software will no longer be able to access Marketplace

Microsoft on Tuesday announced on its Windows Phone Blog two changes regarding its Windows Phone Marketplace that will “help pave the way for new store features and new apps in the months ahead.” The Redmond-based company will be removing the option to shop for Windows Phone apps from the Zune Desktop software and will now require handsets to be running Windows Phone 7.5 to buy and download new apps, or update existing ones. The Zune Music Marketplace will remain open, and the software will be used to back up music and photos, and to install updates on the Zune HD.

Army Software Marketplace offers shortcuts to approved iOS apps

Army Software Marketplace offers shortcuts to approved iOS apps

army software marketplace

The US Army might be in the process of building it’s own tightly controlled smartphone (along with other government agencies), but it’s also taking a more straightforward approach when it comes to delivering training materials to soldiers’ devices. The recently launched Army Software Marketplace is a mobile website that curates training apps developed by the Army’s Connecting Soldiers to Digital Apps (CSDA) program. But rather than distribute the apps, as the name might imply, it simply offers links to download the apps in the iOS App Store. This means that everything in the Army Software Marketplace is readily available to the public; the website just makes it easier to find them.

There are currently twelve apps available in the…

Windows Phone Marketplace tops 70,000 apps

Windows Phone Marketplace tops 70,000 apps

Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace has reportedly reached another milestone according to Chinese website Sina. The company’s chairman and chief executive officer for the Greater China region Simon Leung said that the mobile platform is now home to over 100,000 registered developers who have made more than 70,000 apps available in 63 different markets. The number of apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace, however, is still a relatively small figure when compared to Apple’s App Store, which boasts more than 500,000 apps, and the 450,000 apps in the Google Play marketplace.

Assassin’s Creed 3 four-player co-op listed by XBL Marketplace

Assassin’s Creed 3 four-player co-op listed by XBL Marketplace

The Xbox Live Marketplace’s listing for Assassin’s Creed 3 briefly counted “Online co-op 2 – 4″ among the game’s various features, as well as “Online multiplayer 2 – 8.” While the online multiplayer classification remains, the co-op listing has since been removed from both the European and North American Xbox Live Marketplace.

Situations like this are tricky, because the Xbox Live Marketplace has been known to list some patently false information. At times, however, it can be right on the money, so we’re bringing it your attention. While multiplayer is nothing new at this point for Assassin’s Creed, campaign co-op would be a major addition to the franchise.

Just In Time For SXSW, Getaround Car Rental Marketplace Launches In Austin

Just In Time For SXSW, Getaround Car Rental Marketplace Launches In Austin

getaround

Getaround, a car rental community that only launched in May 2011 and subsequently won TC Disrupt NY, is ready to get you where you need to be in time for SXSW.

The app that lets you rent a car by the hour, day or week, and comes fully loaded with insurance, 24-hour roadside assistance, and a Getaround car-kit has broken ground in some new territories, including (yep, you guessed it) Austin, Texas.

The app received a $ 3.4 million seed round in September, with participation from Netflix founder Marc Randolph, Powerset founder Barney Pell, WordPress’ Matt Mullenweg, Redpoint Ventures, General Catalyst, Michael Arrington‘s Crunchfund and others. At that point Getaround was only available in the Bay Area, but has since gone on to disrupt the Portland area and San Diego.

You see, Getaround isn’t rushing the service into any market without being sure that there’s enough demand, variety and inventory. Luckily for all of you venturing out to SXSW this week, Getaround will be ready for you.

The company says that market-by-market expansion is imminent in the next couple of months.
