After a series of delays and false starts, the historic SpaceX mission to the International Space Station is set to launch this morning. Liftoff is scheduled for 3.44am ET, or 8.44am BST, and if all goes to plan SpaceX’s unmanned Dragon capsule will become the first privately-owned craft to dock with the ISS early on Friday morning. It’s worth noting that we’ve gotten this far before and ended up disappointed by a last-minute abort, but we have a good feeling this time around. You can watch the launch online over at NASA TV — coverage has already started, and there’s less than an hour to go. NASA will also be streaming a post-launch news conference at 5.15am ET / 10.15am BST.

BBC’s live Olympics video stream will include pause, rewind, alerts, and Twitter integration

BBC’s live Olympics video stream will include pause, rewind, alerts, and Twitter integration

Photo

The BBC unveiled its new online video platform in London yesterday, giving us a first glimpse at how it plans to live stream every event from the Summer Olympics. The new browser-based player will offer pause and rewind options, along with live participant information (such as leaderboards and results) and clickable alerts that can take you to other streams when key moments are happening elsewhere. There’ll also be integrated data-driven profiles of the competing athletes that will pull in their Twitter feed alongside public reactions. Anyone that’s ever used BBC’s iPlayer will know it’s not the highest quality stream, and thankfully the broadcaster has taken note; the new player will now stream at up to 3.5Mbps, up from iPlayer’s…

We’re all back and recovered from last week’s CTIA, which can mean only one thing: a coherent, well-rested podcast. Actually, “coherent” is debatable… but well-rested, anyway.

Watch Polygon’s live ‘Diablo III’ playthrough stream for a chance to win the game

diablo 3

Diablo III launched today after years of development and anticipation, and our friends at Polygon have been hard at work in the demon-killing business since the wee hours of the morning. But they’re still going strong in their quest, and you can hop on over to watch them play through the game via their Twitch TV livestream (spoiler alert: you’ll be watching the later stages of the game). Be sure to join in soon, since Polygon will be giving away a copy of the game to one lucky audience member sometime in the next half-hour.

Color for Facebook makes mainstream push with Verizon and Saturday Night Live

Color for Facebook makes mainstream push with Verizon and Saturday Night Live

Photo

Color for Facebook is an app that refuses to settle for anything less than mainstream adoption and, in celebration of the Droid RAZR Maxx’s $ 100 price cut, Verizon has created a commercial that puts the app front and center. This commercial is part of Verizon’s recent marketing shift that eschews the violent robots, dark scenery, and loud noises of previous Droid adverts in favor of a more positive, human message. In this commercial, Verizon weaves an inspiring narrative of a young basketball player streaming a heartfelt speech (with audio) to his friends, peers, and parents using the Color app.

As it this weren’t enough media attention for Color, backstage footage of the the May 19th episode of Saturday Night Live featuring Mick Jagger…

Wireless emergency alert texts going live this month on AT&T, Verizon, and other carriers

Wireless emergency alert texts going live this month on AT&T, Verizon, and other carriers

via www.noaanews.noaa.gov

A nationwide system of extreme weather and other emergency alerts is set to go live this month on all major US carriers. The wireless emergency alerts (WEA) system is a free location-based service that sends short texts to subscribers who are currently in areas experiencing tornadoes, flash floods, earthquakes, or other disasters. AT&T, Cellcom, Cricket, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon Wireless are all participating; Sprint began testing its system late last year.

When the system goes live, customers will be automatically signed up to receive three types of text: presidential alerts for national emergencies, AMBER alerts for missing children, and the aforementioned weather alerts, although they can opt out of all but…

NBCUniversal exec condemns Aereo’s live TV streaming service, worries cable companies could copy it

NBCUniversal exec condemns Aereo’s live TV streaming service, worries cable companies could copy it

Gallery Photo: Aereo hands-on pictures

We knew content providers were dead set against letting Aereo’s web-based live TV streaming service see the light of day after they collectively filed suit against the company back in March. Comments raised in a federal court today only reinforce that volatile opposition, with several high-level network executives painting a doomsday scenario for the cable industry should Aereo be allowed to proceed with its plans. The statements came as part of an effort to obtain a preliminary injunction against Aereo, which would essentially prevent it from getting off the ground while court proceedings are ongoing.

Among the most outspoken critics was Matt Bond, executive vice president of content distribution at NBCUniversal. “It makes little…

Jam Live Music Arcade launches the week of May 16

Jam Live Music Arcade launches the week of May 16

Those dusty, old, cobweb-ridden, spider-infested peripheral instruments collecting mold and animal dander in your living room corner may soon see some use, as Zivix and Reverb Publishing’s Jam Live Music Arcade is now set to pump up your 360/PS3′s jams and/or volume sometime during the week of May 16.

If you made the space-saving decision to rid your apartment of its plastic instruments long ago, you’ll still be able to remix tracks from the likes of Atmosphere and Rise Against with a conventional controller. We suppose wearing a giant homemade Deadmau5 mask is also optional, if you can really consider it proper music production without one.

Are you hoping to experience the thrill and excitement of a game manufacturer E3 press conference, but lacking the credentials to attend? Democracy!

Spike and Xbox Live’s coverage begins one day ahead of the big show on Monday, June 4 – Microsoft likes to kick things off before anyone else at E3, you see. Interested parties can tune in at 12:30PM ET/ 9:30AM PT to catch the whole thing live. Keep an eye out for us in the crowd!
