After a series of delays and false starts, the historic SpaceX mission to the International Space Station is set to launch this morning. Liftoff is scheduled for 3.44am ET, or 8.44am BST, and if all goes to plan SpaceX’s unmanned Dragon capsule will become the first privately-owned craft to dock with the ISS early on Friday morning. It’s worth noting that we’ve gotten this far before and ended up disappointed by a last-minute abort, but we have a good feeling this time around. You can watch the launch online over at NASA TV — coverage has already started, and there’s less than an hour to go. NASA will also be streaming a post-launch news conference at 5.15am ET / 10.15am BST.

SpaceX launch aborted at last second

SpaceX launch aborted at last second

In a dramatic turn of events in Cape Canaveral this morning, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch was aborted at T minus 0.5 seconds. The launch countdown actually reached zero, and the engines visibly ignited before being cut off. The abort was blamed on an excessive pressure reading in the fifth of the rocket’s nine engines, which caused the onboard computer to automatically shut down the launch. The next launch window for SpaceX will be this Tuesday at 3:44 AM EDT, and the company’s founder Elon Musk tweeted that the necessary adjustments will be made ready for a “countdown in a few days.”

Rhode Island governor gives 38 Studios’ Copernicus MMO a June 2013 launch

Rhode Island governor gives 38 Studios’ Copernicus MMO a June 2013 launch

Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee told attendees of a 38 Studios-related press conference that the long awaited 38 Studios MMO – only known currently as “Project Copernicus” – is set to launch in June of 2013. Chafee said, “What I understand is Copernicus is June of ’13.”

Considering we’ve literally never heard any information on the Amalur-based MMO (aside from the fact that it’s an Amalur-based MMO), it’s a bit hard for us to believe that the game will arrive by next year. “I said from the beginning that it was a risky enterprise,” Chafee told press of the troubled business deal between 38 and Rhode Island.

38 Studios is supposed to start paying back its $ 75 million loan – facilitated by the state of Rhode Island and supported by bond investors – by the beginning of 2013. It’s unclear how 38 will afford those payments, but Chafee repeatedly pointed out 38′s intention to seek private capital (read: more money from private investors – and not from the state). Said private capital has yet to be secured, Chafee said.

Konami confirms June 12 launch date for Metal Gear Solid HD on Vita

Konami confirms June 12 launch date for Metal Gear Solid HD on Vita

The retailers were right. Konami has finally officially announced a June 12 North American launch date for Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on the PlayStation Vita and it’s unsurprisingly June 12 in North America. The Vita port includes new control options, utilizing the touch-screen and rear touchpad, allowing players to “zoom in on captivating cut-scenes, peek around corners, interrogate enemies, cycle through weapons, and perform rapid attacks with their knife.”

In addition to the new control options, the PS Vita version of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection can use Transfarring to sync save files with the PS3 game. Of course to use this feature you need to own Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on both the PS3 and PS Vita.

Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome and Soyuz rocket launch in pictures

Soyuz rocket

With the demise of NASA’s space shuttle program, Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome has now become a main launching point for rockets headed to the International Space Station. And now you can check out the Kazakhstan-based facility without hopping on a plane, as The Atlantic‘s In Focus blog has compiled more than 40 images of the location, including the Soyuz rocket, which only recently launched on its way to the ISS. And if that’s not enough, you can also view a great image gallery of the rocket’s launch courtesy of NASA. Of course, the Russian crew will eventually have some company from SpaceX, which plans to launch its ISS mission on May 19th, pending any further delays. Though the Russian program does have a secret weapon — a robot that…

HTC Evo 4G LTE to miss May 18th launch due to US Customs investigation

HTC Evo 4G LTE to miss May 18th launch due to US Customs investigation

HTC Evo 4G LTE hero (1024px)

News broke last night that shipments of HTC’s One X for AT&T and Evo 4G LTE for Sprint were indefinitely delayed at US Customs as the agency investigates the devices for potentially infringing Apple’s patents. Unfortunately for those Sprint customers looking forward to getting the Evo 4G LTE this Friday, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that HTC has said this delay will keep Sprint’s latest device from hitting store shelves on time. For its part, Sprint has removed launch dates from the Evo 4G LTE pages on its website, and is no longer accepting online pre-orders (due to the pre-order inventory being sold out). The site now directs potential purchasers to “check back soon for the national launch). Unfortunately, Sprint customers who…

Budget MVNO Voyager Mobile postpones launch, blames ‘malicious network attack’

Voyager Mobile logo 640

Last night we reported on Voyager Mobile, a new MVNO that planned to offer unlimited voice and texting plans starting at $ 19 a month. Voyager’s website was set to launch this morning, but was taken offline almost immediately thereafter due to what the company is calling a “malicious network attack.” It’s unclear just how long the site was actually active, if at all; the company tweeted that the site was live at 6:02AM EDT, but the missive was replaced just five minutes later by another tweet indicating that it was down due to the alleged attack.

According to a message on the company’s website, it now expects the service to be launched “in the very near future.” We’ve reached out to Voyager Mobile for additional information and will let…

15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display said to be nearing launch

15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display said to be nearing launch

15-inch MacBook Pro Coming Soon

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new 15-inch MacBook Pro laptop with a high-resolution Retina display and a new ultra-thin design. Citing anonymous sources within Apple’s supply chain who have supposedly handled parts from the upcoming notebook computer, 9to5Mac claims the new Ivy Bridge-powered MacBook Pro model will launch this summer. In line with earlier reports, the new MacBook Pro is said to be thinner than the existing 15-inch notebooks but thicker than Apple’s MacBook Air lineup. The new laptops are also said to be equipped with “jaw-dropping” Retina displays as well as USB 3 compatibility, and they will shed their optical drives, like Apple’s MacBook Air and Mac mini have before them, in order to faciliate the new thinner design. Production of the new MacBook Pro models reportedly began in April.
