Tokyo couple awarded $7,400 after iPod nano burst into flames

Nikkei is reporting that Apple Japan has been ordered to pay a Tokyo couple ¥600,000 (about $ 7,425) for medical fees and pain and suffering after their first-generation iPod nano caught fire. The history of issues with first-generation nanos has been well-documented, leading to a recall first in Korea in 2009, then later in Japan and 19 other countries including the US. The prosecutor told Nikkei that the court rarely finds Apple at fault for these kinds of incidents in Japan.

According to the judgment, the couple purchased the device shortly after its release, in September of 2005, but an attempt to charge it in July of 2010 caused the battery to overheat, catching the device on fire, and causing burns to the wife’s hands that took a…

Rhapsody founder Rob Reid’s ‘Copyright Math’ proves that your iPod could be worth $8 billion

Rhapsody founder Rob Reid’s ‘Copyright Math’ proves that your iPod could be worth $8 billion

Copyright Math

The MPAA is fond of throwing out numbers that show just how damaging copyright theft is to the US economy. Stealing content costs more than $ 58 billion annually, for instance, and robs 373,000 Americans of jobs. With his tongue planted firmly in his cheek, Rhapsody founder Robert Reid used a new technique called Copyright Math to reveal just how massive these numbers actually are. For example, $ 58 billion equals the total output of some of the country’s biggest crops. “This is the equivalent to the entire American corn crop failing, along with all of our fruit crops,” Reid explained during a recent TED talk. “As well as wheat, tobacco, rice, sorghum — whatever sorghum is.”

Apple to release iOS 5.1 today for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

Apple on Wednesday announced the release of iOS 5.1 during a press conference in San Francisco, California. Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch combined to make up 76% of the company’s revenue in the fourth quarter last year. Apple sold a combined total of 315 million iOS devices in 2011, and 62 million in the fourth quarter alone. New features in iOS 5.1 include the addition of Japanese language support to Siri and more. iCloud has also been updated to support movies, which can be purchased once and then re-downloaded from iCloud in full-HD 1080p resolution. iOS 5.1 will become available for download on Wednesday in the U.S. and in the coming weeks in Japan.

Pictures of iPod nano with camera re-emerge

Last year a number of leaks and photos suggested that Apple had a redesigned iPod nano with an integrated camera in the works. The new device wasn’t released last time Apple refreshed its iPod family, but now another round of pictures has surfaced that lends credence to the possibility that such a device may launch in the near future. The images show a camera-equipped iPod nano complete with its signature clip design, and the device appears to be the same size as the current-generation iPod nano. It remains unclear if Apple will ever release an iPod nano with a camera but the source, Apple.pro, has published early details surrounding Apple hardware in the past that ended up panning out. Capcom releases Mega Man X for iPhone and iPod touch

Capcom releases Mega Man X for iPhone and iPod touch

We were huge Mega Man fans back when the game made its debut on the NES — and later on the Game Boy — and now we can finally relive some of those amazing gaming days by playing Mega Man X on the iPhone and iPod touch. Capcom released the title in the iTunes App Store recently and, while it’s a bit expensive at $ 4.99, it should be worth the purchase. Mega Man X features Game Center support and 60 different levels following a 20-level opening “Story Mode” campaign. It currently has a 4.5 rating in the iTunes App Store, with just a few complaints from users who aren’t fans of the controls. Unfortunately, the game does not currently support
