Apple’s next iPhone to feature 3.95-inch upgraded Retina display, report claims

Apple’s next iPhone to feature 3.95-inch upgraded Retina display, report claims

Apple iPhone 5 Rumor

Apple’s next-generation iPhone will feature an upgraded high-definition Retina display, according to a report published on Tuesday morning. Without stating where its information came from, 9to5Mac on Tuesday reports that Apple is still testing multiple potential designs for the next-generation iPhone, which BGR reported will launch this fall. The site claims that Apple is still testing several new iPhone models enclosed in locked shells, and at least one of these potential new iPhones includes an upgraded 640 x 1,136-pixel Retina display that measures 3.95 inches diagonally.

With an aspect ratio of close to 16:9, the new Retina display is said to be the same width as the current model but taller, and Apple is reportedly toying with adding a fifth row of icons to the home screen in a version of iOS 6 that could be exclusive to the new iPhone in order to take advantage of the new display real estate.

Beyond potentially posing issues for app developers, the site’s claims contradict earlier reports from both The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, which stated that Apple has already placed orders with its suppliers for new display panels that will be included in the next iPhone. If the Cupertino, California-based company is still testing different displays, panel orders could not yet have been placed.

BGR exclusively reported this past December that a completely redesigned iPhone will launch this fall with a new antenna system and an aluminum case.

Apple iPhone 5 Rumor 4-inch Display

Following a report that Apple is currently testing multiple next-generation iPhone prototypes with a taller Retina display, images of a purported front panel from an unreleased iOS device may provide further evidence that Apple is working on a new iPhone with a larger display. MacRumors on Tuesday published two images of what its unnamed source claims to be the front panel from an upcoming refreshed iPod touch. The opening for the display panel is taller than the one on Apple’s current iPod touch, measuring 4.1 inches diagonally. If the part is authentic, it suggests that the next iPod touch — and Apple’s upcoming sixth-generation iPhone — will include a larger Retina display. The Wall Street Journal and Reuters both reported last week that Apple plans to release a new iPhone this year with a display that measures at least 4 inches. Another image of the purported iPod touch front panel follows below.

Next-gen iPhone rumored to have 1136 x 640 resolution, redesigned dock connector

Following a flurry of reports earlier this month of Apple ordering up new 4-inch displays for its next iPhone, 9to5 Mac is today joining the rumor mill with affirmation that Apple is indeed in the process of testing a new model with a larger and higher-resolution display. Citing an iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2 that are presently in the pre-EVT (Engineering Verification Test) stage of internal testing, the site claims both variants will be equipped with a 3.95-inch screen spanning a more elongated 1136 x 640 resolution. Though this would break the aspect ratio that has been a constant in Apple’s smartphone since its very beginning, there’s also word that an updated version of iOS 6 is also being worked on, adding a fifth row of icons to the…

3-year-old iPhone 3GS primed for revival

3-year-old iPhone 3GS primed for revival

Apple iPhone 3GS Prepaid

Apple’s iPhone 3GS was unveiled nearly 3 years ago in June 2009, and some found its familiar styling and modest hardware upgrades to be disappointing. The handset went on to be Apple’s best-selling smartphone until its successor launched the following year, and the iPhone 4 would be Apple’s best-selling iPhone until the iPhone 4S launched last year and drove the biggest quarter in Apple’s history. The iPhone 3GS will be 3 years and 3 generations old when Apple’s sixth iPhone is unveiled later this year, but one analyst believes the Cupertino, California based company is ready to breathe new life into the handset.

According to Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek, Apple has signed a deal with a “major global distributor” that will target emerging markets around the globe by making the iPhone 3GS available as a less expensive prepaid phone. The analyst doesn’t provide much detail surrounding the deal in his note to clients, though he does believe the wholesale cost of Apple’s third-generation iPhone will drop from $ 375 to the $ 200 to $ 250 range.

Ever the Apple bull, Jefferies also upped its iPhone estimates for the June quarter while the rest of Wall Street panics and Apple’s stock price tumbles. Misek wrote that firms aren’t properly accounting for iPhone production in Hon Hai’s new Brazil plant, and he believes Apple will build between 28 million and 30 million iPhones this quarter, ahead of the Street’s estimates, which range from 26 million to 28 million units on average.

Sprint luring iPhone users on competing networks with $100 trade-in credit toward iPhone 4S

Sprint luring iPhone users on competing networks with $100 trade-in credit toward iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S stock

As rumored earlier this week, Sprint is now offering prospective subscribers $ 100 in trade-in credit for their old iPhone to put towards a shiny new iPhone 4S. The promotion is the latest in the company’s ongoing efforts to lure subscribers to its network and offset the four year, $ 15.5 billion deal it made to procure the iPhone earlier this year. The offer lasts from today until June 1 and is limited to new subscribers who sign up for a 2-year service agreement. The amount offered by the program is subject to the company’s trade-in terms, which depending on the model and its condition could fall below or exceed the $ 100 amount advertised.

Apple’s next iPhone may feature one of Steve Jobs’s last designs

Apple’s next iPhone may feature one of Steve Jobs’s last designs

Apple iPhone 5 Design

Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone may be one of the last products unveiled by the Cupertino, California-based technology giant that was designed by Steve Jobs. The company’s late co-founder and chief executive worked very closely on the retooled iPhone before his untimely passing last October, Bloomberg reports. The news organization also reiterates earlier claims that the next-generation iPhone will feature a larger display than the 3.5-inch panel utilized by its predecessors. BGR exclusively reported last year that Apple plans to launch a completely redesigned iPhone this fall that features a new antenna system and a new case, likely comprised of glass and aluminum. Apple’s sixth iPhone is also expected to include a larger 4-inch display and 4G LTE connectivity.

Windows Phone overtakes iPhone in world’s largest smartphone market

Windows Phone overtakes iPhone in world’s largest smartphone market

Windows Phone Market Share China

Analysts repeatedly harp on how important China is for Apple’s iPhone. The Cupertino, California-based consumer electronics giant’s iPhone 4S launched in China earlier this year but despite reports of continuing negotiations, China Mobile — the world’s largest telecom carrier — still does not offer Apple’s iPhone to its massive subscriber base. But as Apple continues its efforts to make headway in the world’s largest smartphone market, an underdog has reportedly taken an early lead.

According to Michel van der Bel, chief operating office at Microsoft for the Greater China region, Microsoft’s Windows Phone market share now sits at 7% in China. At last count, Apple’s share of the smartphone market in China was 6%, Emerce reports.

“We have only just begun,” van der Bel said. He continued, noting that the combination of Windows Phones and Windows 8 tablets will help Microsoft succeed in the Chinese market. “Our smartphone and tablet-pc are hybrid, making them suitable for the consumer, but also easy to insert within an existing company infrastructure. This will allow us to better anticipate the consumerization of IT than many competitors.”

The first Windows Phone-powered smartphone for the Chinese market launched less than two months ago.

Steve Jobs was ‘closely’ involved in upcoming iPhone redesign, says Bloomberg

iphone stock

The next iPhone will have a larger screen than the 3.5-inch form factor that has characterized Apple’s smartphone through all five of its iterations so far — that’s what The Wall Street Journal told us two days ago, Reuters affirmed yesterday, and Bloomberg is reiterating today. An extra bit of information coming out of Bloomberg, however, is that Apple’s former CEO, Steve Jobs, “had worked closely on the redesigned phone before his death in October.”

Back in 2010, Jobs famously criticized the move to larger form factors, opining that “no one’s going to buy” a big phone, though the overwhelming trend since then — particularly in Apple’s home market of the United States — has been toward ever-larger devices. Today’s revelation would…

4-inch iPhone rumors reaffirmed by Reuters sources

apple iphone stock logo

Reuters has added the weight of its own sources to yesterday’s Wall Street Journal report that Apple is ordering up larger displays for its next-generation iPhone. Whereas the WSJ had word of a new display measuring “at least” 4 inches, one of Reuters’ insiders states that it will be exactly a 4-inch screen. Otherwise, there’s agreement between the two news outlets in terms of the suppliers and timing, with both identifying South Korean and Japanese display makers as getting the orders in from Apple for production to begin in June. Reuters goes on to speculate that Apple may be ready to begin manufacturing the next iPhone in August, provided it adheres to its usual cadence.

Given the typical ramp-up times required to reach sufficient…
