Fiat 500 parked at Volkswagen HQ in Google Street View prank

street view fiat volkswagen

We imagine many people would hide at the sight of the Google Street View car for fear of being recorded for all eternity, but Fiat had other ideas. The Italian carmaker apparently decided to use the opportunity to prank Volkswagen when Google was shooting Street View footage in Sweden recently — and what better way than parking a Fiat 500 right on the doorstep of its German rival’s local headquarters? It’s possible that it was all a coincidence, but since you can see the 500 playfully trailing the Street View car on other shots it doesn’t seem likely. Resume.se says that Fiat’s marketing director unsurprisingly declined to comment, but in any case the damage has been done.

Google Music deauthorization limit poses a problem for rooters

Google Music deauthorization limit poses a problem for rooters

Google Music Deauthorization Limit

Similar to Apple’s iTunes program, Google Music only allows a certain number of devices to be connected to the service at one time. Google allows users to upload up to 20,000 song for free, which can then be accessed by up to 10 “authorized” devices. Once the limit is reached, a user can “deauthorize” a device to allow another a different phone or tablet to take its place. The problem, however, is that Google has limited device deauthorizations to just four per year. While Google’s limit may not affect the average Joe, rooters, ROMers, enthusiasts and even bloggers may run into some trouble. Custom ROM users in particular may run into trouble — Google Music often has difficulties handling custom ROMs and will occasionally de-register and re-register it as a completely new device. According to XDA-Developers, the change is relatively new, and was rolled out over the last 60 days. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gmail adds contact info in search, new Google+ integration

Gmail adds contact info in search, new Google+ integration

Gmail logo

Google has made Gmail search a bit more helpful today, thanks to a new feature that will show rich contact information when you search for a contact’s email address. Previously Gmail searches have only brought up relevant emails, but now you’ll get a picture of your contact, and links to email, text, video chat, or call from within Gmail. Additionally, you’ll get a chronological list of your email history with that contact below that information. Of course, Google+ has a hand in all of this — the contact info that you receive will stay updated with any changes that your friends make to their profiles. If you refuse to use Google+ despite the company’s advances, the info will populate from your regular contacts section of Gmail. Power…

Google Maps adds quick shortcuts to ‘home’ and ‘work’

Google Maps adds quick shortcuts to ‘home’ and ‘work’

Google Maps Desktop my places work

We’ve gotten used to Google pushing out small, helpful new features to Google Maps, and the company continued with that practice today. You’ll now be able to type in “home” or “work” into Maps and it will auto-suggest the addresses that correspond to those locations — if you’ve already given Google that information. That means that if you’ve entered your addresses in Google+ or Latitude, for example, you can now easily get directions to either of those locations. Additionally, there’s now a little (hard-to-see) icon that will pop up in Maps to identify the two places. The new search feature is working now on the desktop version of Maps as well as the Android app, but if Google somehow doesn’t know where you live yet, you can head over…

Google+ is a ghost town, study says

Google+ is a ghost town, study says

Google+

Google’s emerging social network Google+ may boast big user numbers, but a new study suggests that social activity and user engagement are anything but impressive. Intended to give Google a stronger grip on the massive amount of data shared by users on social networks, Google’s answer to Facebook opened its doors to the public last September. After using some user acquisition methods that seemed a bit desperate, Google revealed in December that Google+ was then home to 62 million users. Google+ boasted an impressive 100 million users as of early April, but according to eCommerce analytics firm RJ Metrics, the social network is not the waterfall of data Google hoped it would be.

Fast Company on Tuesday revealed the findings of an RJ Metrics study that analyzed data from a sample of 40,000 public Google+ accounts in an effort to determine just how successful the crown jewel in Google’s social network portfolio really is. According to the firm’s findings, Google+ is a ghost town.

The RJ Metrics suggests that an average post on Google+ gets fewer than one “+1,” the equivalent of a “like” on Facebook, and fewer than one reply as well. Links and other items shared publicly by Google+ users are re-shared just 0.17 times per post on average. Users covered by the study averaged about one post every 12 days, and usage per user declines each month after they make their first public post.

In what is perhaps the most concerning stat from the firm’s study, about 30% of users who make a public post on Google+ never make a second one.

In a statement provided to Fast Company, a Google spokesperson claimed that RJ Metrics’s findings are not accurate.

“By only tracking engagement on public posts, this study is flawed and not an accurate representation of all the sharing and activity taking place on Google+,” the Google spokesperson said. “As we’ve said before, more sharing occurs privately to circles and individuals than publicly on Google+. The beauty of Google+ is that it allows you to share privately–you don’t have to publicly share your thoughts, photos or videos with the world.”

Patent testimony wraps up in Oracle vs. Google as damages phase looms

Patent testimony wraps up in Oracle vs. Google as damages phase looms

Oracle pic

Oracle and Google rest their respective cases today in the patent phase of the infringement trial, marking what Judge Alsup called “a milestone” — but things are still far from over. Doctors David August and John Mitchell faced off in what amounted to a technical expert duel, each rebutting the other’s testimony in connection with the two patents Oracle has accused Google of infringing. Closing arguments will begin tomorrow.

Several rulings this morning also provided a clearer picture of what the rest of the trial will look like. On Friday, both Google and Oracle had discussed dropping the damages phase of the trial altogether, but Oracle’s decision to reject statutory damages in lieu of going after Android profits caused Judge Alsup…

CloudOn releases Android tablet office app, Google Drive integration

CloudOn releases Android tablet office app, Google Drive integration

Cloudon android

CloudOn, which has allowed iPad users to connect to its cloud-based versions of Microsoft Office apps for some time now, has released an Android tablet version of the app. As with the iOS version, you can sync it up with either Box.net or Dropbox, and with the release of the Android app CloudOn is naturally adding support for Google Drive to the mix. Otherwise, it’s essentially the same interface and feature set as you’ll get on an iPad, which is to say a full version of Office hosted in the cloud along with a side of Adobe Reader for other files.

Office’s desktop interface is obviously far from tablet-optimized, but the tradeoff in this free app is that you shouldn’t have to worry about losing formatting or not having access to that…

Google in talks acquire Meebo, says All Things D

Google in talks acquire Meebo, says All Things D

Meebo Logo

Meebo began life in 2005 as a browser-based instant message app and since then has morphed through several iterations, offering products like smartphone IM apps, a content sharing bar for websites, chat rooms, and most recently a service that recommends stories based on an “interest profile” you build up by clicking a custom bookmarklet. One of those many products (or, just as likely, the team that built them) seems to appeal to Google, as All Things D reports that the search giant is in talks to acquire Meebo. Apparently the price is said to be a cool $ 100 million, though neither company is commenting on the rumored deal. If the buyout goes through, we suspect the users of Meebo’s free IM apps on smartphones shouldn’t expect that app to…
