iOS game ‘Papa Quash’ looks remarkably JS Joust-like

Johann Sebastian Joust, the game of players attempting to jostle one another to set off accelerometers, would work great on iPhone (if a bit dangerous), and in fact it looks like it does work great. Too bad developer Die Gute Fabrik wasn’t the one to put it there.

Papa Quash by developer ustwo looks exactly like Joust. Players walk slowly, deliberately around a space, trying to slap, push, or otherwise put each other off balance until only one winner is left unperturbed.

It’s just on iPhone instead of a computer using Moves, and has “wacky characters” and dubstep. Oh, and in-app purchases (it’s otherwise free on iTunes). We’ve placed a video of Joust after the break for comparison. Either two people had the exact same incredibly creative idea, or some “inspiration” was taken from Joust.

Of course, this isn’t the first time an iOS clone has beaten an official indie game port to market. Radical Fishing developer Vlambeer found Ninja Fishing on iOS ahead of its own mobile version, and one game, One and One Story, was cloned on iOS from the original code.

Three more playable characters for new Double Fine game

Three more playable characters for new Double Fine game

Image

Double Fine is building up an intriguing cast of characters for its mysterious, bone-themed game. First we had the monk, the hillbilly and the time traveler, and now we have three more random occupations to ponder: the adventurer, the scientist and the knight.

Double Fine’s Ron Gilbert posted images of each of these characters on his blog, Grumpy Gamer. The only other information gleaned from the reveals appears to be that the knight isn’t exactly Sir Bravery, but we could have gotten that from the little shaking knees in his picture.

Newcastle University neuroscientists use video game for stroke rehab

Newcastle University neuroscientists use video game for stroke rehab

Image

Video games aren’t neuroscience, unless they’re helping stroke victims recover physical function in a scientific, medical capacity: then they’re totally neuroscience. The above video shows off Circus Challenge, an action game from Newcastle University and Limbs Alive Ltd designed to help stroke patients regain motor control of their weakened hands and arms.

Circus Challenge uses “next-gen” motion controllers – not the Wii, as other rehab systems have – to have patients fling pies at clowns, juggle, dive and perform other Big Top-inspired feats, with the difficulty progressing as motor skills improve. Newcastle received £1.5 million from the Health Innovation Challenge Fund for its project, and hopes to use the funds to provide remotely monitored, at-home therapy for stroke patients.

Aside from all the philanthropy and innovation in the Circus Challenge project, we think the game design is pretty pretty as well. Check it out for yourself up top.

Borderlands 2 fixes voice chat, framerate issues from first game

Borderlands 2 fixes voice chat, framerate issues from first game

The folks over at Gearbox Software have been busy with a lot more than designing fancy collector’s editions, according to Borderlands 2 producer Matt Charles. Answering fan-submitted twitter questions on the PlayStation Blog, Charles addressed several technical problems suffered by Borderlands – by and large, the news is positive.

Voice chat issues that plagued the first game, for instance, are currently being worked on and the system “will be working for everyone when the game launches.” Charles also said that while it’s “too early for me to give any final numbers,” Borderland 2‘s framerate will “see an improvement over the first game.”

He also mentioned the upgraded user interfaces we’ve talked about before, and that players will now automatically pick up ammo and currency dropped by felled villains: “There’s a lot more useful data for gear comparison and also more descriptive text on the item cards as well. Having said that, the best way to know what a gun does is to use it.”

Watch this: ‘Community’ video game finale is a dazzling retro adventure

Watch this: ‘Community’ video game finale is a dazzling retro adventure

Community

Fans of NBC’s Community are no stranger to bizarre and unexpected twists, since the show’s creator has often taken dramatic license with its format from episode to episode. And Thursday’s finale, set in a beautifully conceived video game world, is probably one of the most unique and exciting primetime episodes of television we’ve seen in some time. The episode tracks the Greendale Community College’s infamous study group as it travels through a rougelike retro gameworld in pursuit of the character Pierce’s (Chevy Chase) inheritance. While the game itself is obviously a far-fetched creation, it’s a joy to watch the characters figure out how to grapple with its challenges as they face off against a devious archenemy played by the…

Game of Thrones gets June 8 UK release date

Game of Thrones gets June 8 UK release date

Game of Thrones, the latest RPG from Cyanide, is set to take over the UK and Ireland on June 8 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Based on the world first penned by George R.R. Martin, players guide two playable characters through locales both new and familiar to the series.

Players land in Riverspring, a new location to the Game of Thrones world and the home of Alester Sarwyck, who seeks to put a stop to his sister’s marriage. Also starring in the game is Mors, a brother of the Night’s Watch that guards the wall.

Those wanting to seize the iron throne while living across the sea (you silly Targaryens!) can check out our review of the game and then try for themselves in June.

‘Time Traveler’ is another playable character in Double Fine’s mystery game

‘Time Traveler’ is another playable character in Double Fine’s mystery game

ImageDouble Fine’s Ron Gilbert has revealed another character from his puzzling new title, this one called “the time traveler.”

She is one of “three playable characters” that Gilbert has unveiled in three days on his personal gaming blog, Grumpy Gamer. Yesterday and the previous day Gilbert revealed the monk and the hillbilly.

The time traveler’s silhouette is visible in the background of the puzzle Double Fine sent us earlier this month. We have to admit, she looks way cooler with glowing blue (we assume time-travel-inducing) accessories than as a vague, whispy shadow.

The plot, and the question, thickens: What do a hillbilly, a monk and a time traveler have in common?

GameStop Mobile: video game retailer sells cellular service on AT&T’s 3G network?

GameStop Mobile: video game retailer sells cellular service on AT&T’s 3G network?

GameStop Mobile 640

GameStop is looking at several new ways to make money, but here’s the most interesting we’ve heard yet: after you trade in your used games, you might be able to walk out of the store with a GameStop-branded cell phone plan. GameStop Mobile is the name of the company’s new initiative, according to a new, highly detailed webpage on the company’s site, and it seems to be a wireless mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) offering 3G voice, data and text messages by piggybacking on AT&T’s nationwide GSM network. While GameStop sells used iPhones, the idea seems to be that you wouldn’t buy the phone from GameStop itself, but rather just buy a SIM card and stick it into your compatible GSM device.

According to the website, prices start at $ 20 a…

‘Indie Game: The Movie’ reveals the people behind the pixels

‘Indie Game: The Movie’ reveals the people behind the pixels

Indie Game The Movie

You don’t need to be a walking video game encyclopedia to understand why the plot of Indie Game: The Movie makes for such a compelling story. The Sundance award-winning documentary, which premiered in New York City last night, explores plenty of familiar themes about creative individuals struggling to make it in a highly-competitive industry. But the film’s heavily-cropped focus on the relatively uncharted topic of independent video game development evolves into a unique and emotionally rich human drama, hurling viewers up close (at points, unsettlingly close) to four celebrated figures who have shunned the studio system to create games that act as deeply personal expressions.

Filmmakers James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot, who spent…
