Developers begin bringing ‘Magic Lantern’ firmware to Canon 5D Mark III

Developers begin bringing ‘Magic Lantern’ firmware to Canon 5D Mark III

The developers of Canon hacked firmware “Magic Lantern” have begun porting the custom software to the 5D Mark III. Earlier today, Alex Dumitrache of the “Magic Lantern firmware development” group posted the image above of the 5D Mark III displaying a rudimentary “Hello, World!” string. This might seem insignificant, but it indicates that Canon hasn’t taken drastic measures to prevent the firmware from being modified. The Magic Lantern Team has brought the custom firmware to the 5D Mark II, the T2i, and many other models.

The firmware is targeted at film makers, unlocking a variety of options and settings that Canon holds back right out of the box, like adjustable audio levels instead of an automatic gain control. However, photographers…

New 3DS firmware now available with folder support (hands-on video)

New 3DS firmware now available with folder support (hands-on video)

3ds firmware update

The 3DS firmware update that Nintendo announced at the weekend is now available worldwide. It adds folder support to the device, allowing users to organize their home screens in a less cluttered fashion. The functionality is simple but effective — tapping an empty space on the system’s home screen will give the option to create a new folder, which pops up in place. Adding icons to the folder is a matter of dragging them on top just like in iOS, and you can keep up to 60 applications in each. You can give your folders a name, though you’ll only be able to read it on the top screen — the icon itself only displays the first character, so for example folders named Game Boy and Game Boy Advance would appear identical on the touch screen….

Nintendo announces ‘New Super Mario Bros 2′ and major 3DS firmware update

nintendo mushroom 3ds

Nintendo has announced New Super Mario Bros 2 for 3DS. The game will be out in August in Japan, and is in the same 2D/3D style as the previous New Super Mario Bros games on DS and Wii. The company also announced a major 3DS firmware update coming April 25th that will enable folder organization (finally!) and allow game patches and upgrades to be issued easily.

Also on the way this year is a 20th anniversary compilation of Kirby games for Wii, along with a confirmed autumn launch in Japan for Tobidase: Doubutsu no Mori, the 3DS iteration of the Animal Crossing series.

The news comes via a webcast currently being broadcast to Japanese audiences.

Nokia confirms Lumia 900 data problem, offering exchanges and $100 credits; firmware update around April 16th

Nokia confirms Lumia 900 data problem, offering exchanges and $100 credits; firmware update around April 16th

Nokia Lumia 900 software (555px)

Nokia has just confirmed the data connection problems that some early buyers (and reviewers like ourselves) have seen on the Lumia 900, describing it as a “memory management” issue. That’s the bad news; the good news, however, is that the company claims that it’s strictly a software bug, not a hardware issue or a problem with AT&T’s LTE network. New phones with updated software are apparently already on their way to stores — Nokia expects them to arrive within a couple days — and if you don’t want to exchange yours for a new one, you’ll be able to update your current device using the Zune client on or around next Monday, April 16th.

Regardless, anyone buying a Lumia 900 between launch and midnight on April 21st will qualify for a…

Third Nokia Lumia 800 firmware update reportedly improves battery life

Third Nokia Lumia 800 firmware update reportedly improves battery life

Gallery Photo: White Lumia 800 hands-on photos

Nokia has started to rollout its latest Lumia 800 firmware update. Version 1600.2487.8107.12070 allegedly brings a number of fixes to Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone, including improvements to idle battery discharge and screen brightness controls. WPCentral says the latest firmware update, rolling out to users in Singapore via the Zune desktop client, “tripled” the battery life of its Lumia 800.

Nokia has also reportedly addressed an issue with the lack of audio bass through headsets, improved the auto-white balance of the camera, and changed the illumination of the capacitive hardware buttons. Nokia’s last major firmware release (1600.2483.8106.11500) addressed some battery issues with the Lumia 800, but the company seemed confident it…

Apple releases EFI firmware update for 2011 Macs

Apple releases EFI firmware update for 2011 Macs

MacBook Pro EFI software update

Apple has released an EFI firmware update for its entire 2011 Mac line, including the iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro. While it doesn’t offer any new features on the front end, the update (varying in size from 3.7 to 4.2MB depending on your computer) is still one worth downloading, offering fixes to several stability issues. The update also promises to improve the reliability of booting from a network, address an issue that can prevent HDCP authentication after a reboot, and will resolve an issue with boot device selection when a USB storage device is hot-plugged into your machine. If you haven’t yet received the prompt, fire up Software Update to install, but be warned: a computer restart is required.

PS3 firmware update speeds up web browsing

PS3 firmware update speeds up web browsing

If you signed into PSN on your PS3 to, say, try to buy a Vita game, you’ll have run into this already: surprise! There’s a new mandatory system update. According to Sony, version 4.10 accounts for the change in the name of your account, from “PSN account” to “SEN account.”

The update also makes improvements to the PS3 browser, including “improved display speed.” We’d compare it for you, but the one time I personally tried to use the PS3 browser in the past, it froze my system and I had to pull out the power cord to reset. So if the new browser doesn’t do that, it’s a dramatic improvement.

Vita gets more Remote Play titles with hacked PS3 firmware

Vita gets more Remote Play titles with hacked PS3 firmware

Several YouTube videos have popped up, showcasing PlayStation 3 titles being played via the PlayStation Vita’s Remote Play function — titles usually not supported by the feature. Officially, the Vita is currently restricted to a handful of titles, but a hacked version of PS3 firmware 3.55 (reportedly susceptible to the infamous PS3 “jailbreak” hack) allows users to play many more titles.

The Vita appears as a “mobile phone” in this configuration, and offers up a wider variety of choices than the normal Vita Remote Play. The videos in question, uploaded by YouTube users homer49, feature Batman: Arkham Asylum, Battlefield 3 (shown above), Alice: Madness Returns, Mortal Kombat and Red Dead Redemption. The games display a hefty amount of input lag.

Sony still plans to expand the official Remote Play library going forward. The company previously showed Killzone 3 running via Remote Play at the Tokyo Game Show and stated that developers would soon receive tools to help implement Remote Play on upcoming and previously released titles.
