PSA: EA shutting down Dragon Age Legends servers June 18

PSA: EA shutting down Dragon Age Legends servers June 18

Electronic Arts and BioWare’s social soiree in Ferelden will be coming to an end on June 18, 2012, according to the official Dragon Age Legends website. E-commerce for the title ended yesterday, meaning that while the game it still active for the time being, it’s no longer possible to convert your real-life dollars into fake Dragon Dollars crowns for use in Ferelden’s many shops.

BioWare has also initiated a “massive fire sale” on all in-game items until the servers go down, so anyone with stockpiles of fake internet money can get their fake internet money’s worth, at least for a few weeks. If the thought of living without a weird Facebook adaptation of the Dragon Age world is too much to handle, take heart: A single-player version of the game will be made available on the official site “shortly after the current version of the game shuts down.”

Dragon Quest X goes online in Japan August 2

Dragon Quest X, the Wii continuation of Square Enix’s real flagship series – and the one that is an MMO this time – will launch in Japan on August 2, Square Enix announced today. The base retail price for the actual disc and stuff is ¥6,980 ($ 86); this includes 20 days of free play. A limited edition will include a USB memory stick for an extra ¥2,000. A Wii U version is still on the way, but all details are “undecided.”

Of course, there are also the fees to contend with. For ¥1,000 ($ 12.35), you can get a 30-day voucher allowing you to play with up to three characters; 60 days runs ¥1,950 ($ 24), and 90 days costs ¥2,900 ($ 36). Wii Points can also be used to buy DQX time, in equivalent denominations.

Kamehame-hope nobody sees us playing Dragon Ball Z for Kinect

Kamehame-hope nobody sees us playing Dragon Ball Z for Kinect

Image

We knew Dragon Ball Z For Kinect (that’s the official name!) was going to be a silly experience, since Dragon Ball Z is inherently silly, but we simply were not prepared for the reality of standing still in your living room punching the air.

Even in this trailer, which does its best to make the game look cool and exciting, we can’t help but notice the almost total lack of lower body motion as the player punches and occasionally pops a squat. Except, of course, for the infrequent kick out into the air. Meanwhile, as you stand motionless, a dramatic aerial battle is happening on screen, complete with (extra) dramatic dialogue. Y-You monkey!

RED announces Dragon 6K sensor upgrade for Epic and Scarlet cameras

RED announces Dragon 6K sensor upgrade for Epic and Scarlet cameras

via dl.dropbox.com

High-definition specialist RED has announced that an upgrade is coming for its Epic and Scarlet cameras, allowing users to add 6K native video recording (6,000 x 4,000) to their already specced out video shooters. Dubbed “Dragon,” the sensor also promises 15 stops of native dynamic range as well as the ability to record at 120fps in 5K. This is a significant upgrade for the cameras, which can currently only shoot at 4K while still maintaining any kind of fluid frame rate.

RED’s cameras are designed with this kind of upgrade in mind, with a modular design meaning that users can easily add new features or lens mounts to their cameras at a later date — hardly something that Canon’s new cinema range can boast. These modules (and avoiding…

Dragon Ball Z Kinect powering up this October

Dragon Ball Z Kinect powering up this October

Months after a Korean rating started us thinking up ridiculous fantasies about Dragon Ball Z Kinect, Namco Bandai has announced the game at a press event in Las Vegas, due in October. Players will get control of over 50 characters (including Mr. Pointyhair, karate guy, green man, and the little one) and perform real DBZ-style moves gesturally.

QR codes will (somehow) be distributed to unlock extra characters, because trying to focus a lamp on a card so the game will read it is a super important part of Dragon Ball lore.

Double Dragon Neon flickers with signs of life

Double Dragon Neon flickers with signs of life

The first time I laid my hands on Double Dragon Neon, I was not impressed. The bright ’80s colors weren’t doing it for me. The character models for protagonists Jimmy and Billy looked hunched and unnatural. Their attacks were stilted and limited. The enemy designs were silly and altogether over the top.

The second time I played it, however, I slipped on a pair of headphones and something happened. The classic Double Dragon music washed over me, reworked with 80s synth and electric guitar, and I saw something I hadn’t noticed before: potential.

BioWare done with Dragon Age 2, fully moving on to next phase

BioWare done with Dragon Age 2, fully moving on to next phase

BioWare’s Dragon Age 2 team has officially packed up its tents, put out the fires and left camp, executive producer Mark Darrah announced on the BioWare forums.

“While we will still be keeping an eye out for any issues that might crop up in DAII and supporting the community should any emergencies should [sic] arise, we’re moving the entire team’s focus to the next phase of Dragon Age’s future,” Darrah wrote.

The “next phase of Dragon Age’s future” could be too vague for some, so creative director Mike Laidlaw clarified in a TL;DR Twitter update: “We’re done development on Dragon Age II, and the team has fully moved onto The Next Thing(tm).”

BioWare halted production on Exalted March, an expansion pack for Dragon Age 2, because “other Dragon Age opportunities came up,” Darrah tweeted. It’s safe to reason that stopping production on DLC probably wouldn’t happen for anything less than work on a shiny new title, and with these scraps of evidence and previous unintentional outings, we feel safe to propose that BioWare is now working on Dragon Age 3.

Moving the franchise into the future involves looking at the past, Darrah said. “This past year, we’ve spent a lot of time both going back to the ‘BioWare vault’ of games and re-examining them, and looking at some new possibilities that today’s industry allows,” he wrote. The Dragon Age team may not have to look very far in BioWare’s history to find things it should avoid, such as “endings.”

Dragon’s Dogma takes dragon fighting to new heights

Dragon’s Dogma takes dragon fighting to new heights

Yes, we do mean that in Dragon’s Dogma you fight dragons in the sky — just in case that wasn’t clear. You should probably make things even clearer by watching one such dragon get totally stabbed in mid-air in the trailer above, preparing you for the upcoming undated demo on XBL and PSN.

Crimson Dragon spreads its wings in a new trailer

Crimson Dragon spreads its wings in a new trailer

When we first heard Microsoft was backing a game called Project Draco, we thought it was a Harry Potter spinoff title featuring Draco Malfoy, Winky the house-elf and Minerva McGonagall in a Three’s Company-style RPG. Turns out it’s a flying shooter for Kinect starring dragons, which is way cooler, we admit.

Director Yukio Futatsugi described some specifics of Crimson Dragon, the official title for Project Draco, at a Microsoft event, listed by Famitsu and unofficially translated by XBLA enthusiast @lifeflower. According to the translation, Crimson Dragon will allow players to ride six different dragons, but Futatsugi showed three, the Blood Skin, Dark Shoulder and a hairy number called Snow Wing.

Check out a few pictures from the event showing off some blurry, big dragons, right here.

Crimson Dragon is Project Draco’s final name, game still gorgeous

Crimson Dragon is Project Draco’s final name, game still gorgeous

Try and look surprised: the Australian classification of Panzer Dragoon-esque on-rails shooter Project Draco as “Crimson Dragon” was accurate, as the game has been officially renamed. The new title was confirmed during an Xbox 360 event in Japan this week, wherein a handful of new shots were shown off as well. As you can see for yourself, the game is looking gorgeous (Avatar-esque, if we can), and Famitsu was feeling notably positive on the Kinect-controlled XBLA title. Crimson Dragon is expected to launch at an unnamed point in 2012.

And yes, it is highly unlikely the renaming has anything do with infamous TNA wrestler Chris Hamrick, in case you were wondering.
