Steam Wallet store displays arrive at GameStop

Steam Wallet store displays arrive at GameStop

Image

It looks like Steam vouchers are definitely headed to GameStop. Images sent to Joystiq by an anonymous tipster reveal an in-store display for Steam Wallet voucher cards in both $ 20 and $ 50 amounts. This bolsters the image that made the rounds last week, providing further evidence that the cards will indeed be going on sale at GameStops very soon.

The upshot of all this, of course, is that GameStop will be selling gift cards for one of its major competitors, which is especially intriguing as the company has been working to build its own digital distribution platform for several years. We’ve contacted GameStop and will provide updates as this story develops.

Sharp now building world’s first IGZO panels for thinner, more energy efficient displays

Sharp now building world’s first IGZO panels for thinner, more energy efficient displays

sharp logo

At its plant in Kameyama, Japan, Sharp has started production on the first LCD panels that feature indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) semiconductors, which will lead to thinner displays with lower energy consumption. Production on the panels actually kicked off last month, but Sharp said today that it has ramped up its efforts due to increased demand. The IGZO semiconductor material lets Sharp produce LCD panels with much smaller transistors, and the company is also utilizing the same photo-alignment technology found in its Aquos TV line for better image quality. The Kameyama plant is focusing on building small and mid-sized displays for devices like tablets and monitors, which, based on sample specs provided, includes displays as large as…

Samsung’s flexible, ‘unbreakable’ AMOLED displays to be called ‘Youm’

Samsung’s flexible, ‘unbreakable’ AMOLED displays to be called ‘Youm’

Samsung Flexible display ad

Samsung’s upcoming flexible AMOLED displays now have a name: “Youm.” The branding comes from a new page on the Korean Samsung Mobile Display website, which offers little else other than the new name. The company has entered an application to the US Patent and Trademark Office for Youm, and the logo below is included in the filing. Other than the name, Samsung’s site offers a quick comparison between the new technology, LCD, and OLED. The only difference between the standard OLED and its flexible counterpart is the use of film instead of glass, which the company claims makes the display “thinner, lighter, and unbreakable.” A name certainly means we’re one step closer to seeing these displays hit the market, but Samsung’s estimate of a…

Google+ now pulls and displays information from Google Contacts

Google+

Google+ has been updated to pull data from Google Contacts and display it in the profiles of your Google+ friends, starting today. If you’re a Gmail or Android user, chances are you’ve got a well-populated contacts list, and now information on that list will automatically show up in a Google+ user’s “about” section — for your eyes only. It’s a minor update, but a useful one, and something that most smartphones and other services already do when they sync contact information from multiple sources.

Redesigned iMacs may feature anti-reflective glass displays

Redesigned iMacs may feature anti-reflective glass displays

A redesigned family of Apple’s iMac computers may feature anti-reflective displays, DigiTimes reported on Monday. The Taiwanese publication claimed that G-Tech is ramping up its production capacity of cover glass from 1.8 million units a month to 3 million units, and the company is estimated to produce up to 30% of the total cover glass orders for Apple’s iPad in 2012. According to “industry sources,” G-Tech is also expected to supply anti-reflective glass for Apple’s iMac lineup, which will expand the company’s growth within the industry. The next-generation iMacs are rumored to arrive in the second half of the year, and they will reportedly be slimmer and lighter than the current models.

LG, not just Samsung, is supplying iPad Retina Displays according to Reuters

LG, not just Samsung, is supplying iPad Retina Displays according to Reuters

Following a report suggesting Samsung became the sole supplier of Retina Displays for the new iPad after panels from LG Display and Sharp failed to meet Apple’s quality standards, a new report claims this is not the case. Reuters on Wednesday reported that LG Display is indeed supplying Retina panels for the new Apple tablet. ”LG is also in a panel supply deal with Samsung for the new iPad,” the site’s anonymous source is quoted as having said. Reuters did not address whether or not Sharp might also be supplying display panels for the new iPad, which goes on sale at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, March 16th.

Samsung to supply iPad displays after LG, Sharp quality fails to meet Apple’s requirements

Samsung to supply iPad displays after LG, Sharp quality fails to meet Apple’s requirements

Despite numerous ongoing legal battles between the two rivals, Samsung Electronics is reportedly the sole supplier of displays for Apple’s new iPad tablet, which is set to launch this coming Friday. While speaking with Bloomberg, IHS iSuppli analyst Vinita Jakhanwal said that high-resolution display panels supplied by LG Display and Sharp did not meet Apple’s quality requirements. As a result, Apple’s 2,048 x 1,536-pixel Retina Display panels will be supplied exclusively by Samsung at launch. ”The display specifications on the new iPad are very demanding in terms of the very high resolution,” Jakhanwal told Bloomberg. “Achieving this high resolution without compromising on the power consumption and brightness and maintaining Apple’s quality standards are supposedly proving to be a challenge for LG Display and Sharp.”

Future Samsung smartphones to feature flexible displays

Future Samsung smartphones to feature flexible displays

Late last month, Samsung confirmed that it will start mass production of flexible displays this year. The first set of screens will come off the line in the second or third quarter of 2012, with the second batch will be built in the second quarter of 2013. The South Korean manufacturer has dabbled with contoured displays in the past, however a flexible display could allow a device to be fully folded and unfolded like a book. According to Samsung, the displays are capable of decreasing power consumption by cutting the supply of operating power to a display based on the degree to which it is bent, PatentBolt reported on Monday. In a recent patent filing, the company states that flexible displays are bendable, can be made to appear crooked, and can be folded and rolled up like a magazine, all while maintaining the visibility and other features common among flat displays.
