David Cronenberg sides with digital: ‘I have no particular affection for film whatsoever’

David Cronenberg

David Cronenberg unequivocally offered his stance on the movie industry’s move away from film and towards digital today, telling the Toronto Sun at the Cannes Film Festival that “it’s about time that film died its natural death and it’s doing that.” The seasoned filmmaker (director of movies like The Fly, Videodrome, and A History of Violence) was at Cannes for the premier of his upcoming sci-fi film, Cosmopolis, as well as that of his son’s first feature, Antiviral. Both films were shot using (RED competitor) Arri Alexa cameras, of which Cronenberg said: “what you do as a director, how you work with the actors and what the lens do and what the light does is exactly the same” between digital and film. Like others in the digital camp, the…

Preserving video games in the digital age

Preserving video games in the digital age

Flickr Super Nintendo

Digital preservation is an issue for just about every medium — from film and literature to the web itself — and video games are no different. And when it comes to keeping the Super Nintendo alive, Byuu is one of the most prominent figures thanks to his bnes emulator, which attempts to emulate Nintendo’s 16-bit console as accurately as possible. This March, after years of work, the project finally managed to accurately emulate each and every SNES coprocessor — leading to an emulator that could play every officially released game. He’s even gone a step further with the SNES Preservation Project, in which he has spent more than $ 10,000 to gather every Super Nintendo game released in North America. The collection is complete, and he’s…

SOL: Exodus flying to all digital distribution systems, European retail this summer

Space combat invigorater SOL: Exodus is heading to European boxed retail this summer and all digital distribution systems shortly. Developer Seamless struck a deal with publisher Iceberg Interactive to the bring the game to physical shelves in the UK , Ireland, Scandinavia, Benelux and other territories beginning June 22.

SOL has definitely been a labor of love for us, and we can’t wait to hear from fans and players from around the world.” Seamless Studio Director Dan Magaha said, “As a small indie developer working in the town where Wing Commander was born, it’s been an enormous honor to build our homage to the classic space games we loved when we were young, and we hope that passion comes through in the quality of our work.”

SOL: Exodus launched on Steam earlier this year and, for whatever hiccups it may have as an indie project (many smoothed since launch), it’s still totally worth it for $ 10.

Does digital publication guarantee preservation?

Does digital publication guarantee preservation?

St. Johns College (Cambridge) Library

As the publication world is dragged, kicking and screaming, into the digital world, a lot of complex issues come up. One of the most important, especially for librarians and archivists (not to mention students of history looking to the future), is the question of preservation. Logic tells us that the move from physical, degradable old books to ebooks will be a positive one for the evolution of preservation, that we should be able to save more — or even everything — moving forward into the glorious clouded future.

The problem, says Barbara Galletly reporting for Digital Book World, is that the foundation for such a transition has not been properly laid, digital preservation is a largely chaotic, random affair right now, and the…

Minecraft XBLA was profitable within an hour, broke digital sale records

Minecraft XBLA was profitable within an hour, broke digital sale records

Minecraft is digging its own grave with its latest release on XBLA — and by “grave” we mean “lavish, gold-plated throne room with indoor pool and grape-feeding robots.” Minecraft was profitable within an hour of its launch on XBLA, developer Markus “Notch” Persson tweeted today. That’s on top of Notch’s multi-million-dollar PC version.

Based on leaderboard participation numbers, Minecraft sold more than 400,000 copies in 24 hours, Notch said. Minecraft broke digital sales records for the console, selling more than any other XBLA title in its first day, according to Microsoft.

Earlier today, Notch tweeted that he had sales numbers for Minecraft (turns out they were the above leaderboard figures), which sparked a conversation about the inner workings of XBLA developer contracts with Fez‘s Polytron. Polytron still doesn’t know Fez‘s exact numbers, even though it came out a month ago.

“Standard procedure” according to Polytron is “you find out how much you sold when you get your first check three-four months later.” Notch thought getting immediate numbers was standard, but he avoided contract negotiation and doesn’t know what it says on the subject, he replied.

Minecraft also gets free updates, “which is something every other developer on the platform is told is simply not an option,” Polytron wrote. Notch replied: “We had to fight for that, and we got a limited number of them. Not sure why they don’t like it.”

We may have discovered Notch’s hidden talent and secret to his success: fighting for something in a contract while avoiding contract negotiation, and winning.

AT&T Digital Life home automation platform set for Dallas and Atlanta trials this summer

AT&T Digital Life home automation platform set for Dallas and Atlanta trials this summer

AT&T Digital Life

Ahead of the CTIA show in New Orleans this week, AT&T has announced Digital Life, a home automation and security platform that will be offered as a professionally-installed system directly through the carrier’s stores (among other places). AT&T is leaving the range of devices and capabilities offered through Digital Life somewhat open-ended, but users will be able to set up cameras, window and door sensors, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, automated door locks (akin to Schlage Link), thermostats, and power control, for starters. “Any web-enabled device” will be able to control the system in your home, AT&T says, including PCs, tablets, and smartphones — and you don’t need to be using an AT&T phone to do so.

AT&T’s move looks to be…

Windows 8 to support Dolby Digital Plus audio codec after all

Windows 8 to support Dolby Digital Plus audio codec after all

Dolby Logo Crate Stock 1020

Dolby has announced that Microsoft will build support for Dolby Digital Plus stereo technology directly into all Windows 8 computers. The codec (also known as Enhanced AC-3) will enable 5.1-channel surround sound in desktop and Metro-style apps on both X86 and ARM devices. It will be included on the full OS lineup, including Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, or Windows RT — the latter of which has us dreaming of an ARM-based, Metro Media Center, just a little.

While Dolby’s Digital Plus has been found in Windows Vista and Windows 7, in August of last year Dolby stated that its technologies were “not currently included in the Windows 8 operating system under development,” leaving the future of the relationship up in the air. Should the…

Bose Wave Music III and Wave Radio III come with digital radio for international listeners

Bose Wave Music III and Wave Radio III come with digital radio for international listeners

via dl.dropbox.com

Bose just launched the Wave Radio III and Wave Music III today — the Music is almost identical to the radio but adds a CD player. The big change here over their predecessors is the addition of an integrated digital radio tuner that can receive DAB, DAB+, and T-DMB signals, which removes the need for the £150 (around $ 240) Acoustic Wave DAB module. If you’re upgrading from an earlier Wave system all of your other accessories are compatible, and an FM radio is still on board.

Another thing that hasn’t changed is the hefty amount you’ll have to pay to get hold of one: the Wave Radio III is $ 349.95, while the larger Wave Music III is $ 499.95, or £449.95 (about $ 730) and £599.95 (roughly $ 970) respectively in the UK. It’s worth noting…

Visa digital wallet V.me launching in UK, Spain, and France this fall

Visa digital wallet V.me launching in UK, Spain, and France this fall

V me visa

Visa has announced that its digital wallet solution V.me will be launching in the UK, France, and Spain starting this fall. The service, which was announced last year, lets users combine their bank accounts with credit and debit cards into a payment service that’s accessible with a username and password, much like PayPal. Visa says that V.me will be available through its member banks and will let users add multiple cards to their wallets. At launch it will only be available as a website, though mobile apps and NFC-based payment solutions are expected to be added in the future.

In addition to the initial launch countries, Visa also announced a partnership with digital payment company WorldPay, which will help develop the service in the…
