Kinect and Canon 5D combine for candid 3D imagery

kinect 3d depth

In our Lytro review, we mentioned seeing a preview of an upcoming mode that allows you to manipulate the perspective of a photo after the fact, using 3D data captured by the camera’s unique sensor. While the Lytro won’t be widely available for a while, you may already have technology with the potential for similar functionality under your TV stand in the shape of Microsoft’s Kinect. James George and Alexander Porter have exploited this in a series of CCTV-inspired images, using custom software to combine the Kinect sensor’s depth information with images from a Canon 5D. The results are striking — George and Porter took candid photographs of passengers on the New York City subway, once intended to have a high-tech surveillance system of…

Canon EOS 5D Mark III launches in March for $3,499: all-new sensor, faster CPU, improved video (hands-on preview)

Gallery Photo: Canon EOS 5D Mark III hands-on photos

When Canon introduced the EOS 5D Mark II in late 2008, it was something of a cinematic revolution — its HD-capable, full-frame sensor granted access to the world of cinematic depth of field at a fraction of the usual price. However, a lot’s changed in the three and a half long years since the camera broke cover, plus now Nikon’s making a major play for DSLR video shooters with the bold new D800. Canon’s response? The new EOS 5D Mark III. It’s a full frame DSLR with a 22.3-megapixel sensor, a fast new processor, much-requested video fixes and additions, and a number of features ripped from the camera’s high-end brother, the EOS-1D X.

All these new features come at a cost, though — the camera will launch at the end of March…

Canon announces 5D Mark III accessories: Speedlite 600EX-RT, Wi-Fi file transmitter, battery grip, and more

Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT

To go along with the just-announced EOS 5D Mark III, Canon has introduced a new series of accessories that will be rolling out over the next few months. Most notable is probably Canon’s new flash, the Speedlite 600EX-RT. This $ 629.99 flash is Canon’s new top-of-the-line model and is the first Speedlite on the market with a built-in wireless radio transmitter, which eliminates the need for accessory radio units. The 600EX-RT can be used as a master unit and trigger up to 15 off-camera “slave” 600-EX-RTs, as long as they’re within 30 meters of the master unit.

The flash itself is more powerful than its predecessor (the 580EX II), as well — it now covers a zoom range of 20mm to 200mm, and has a guide number of 60 meters. To go along with…

Canon EOS-1D X won’t quite make March, will release in late April

Canon EOS-1D X won’t quite make March, will release in late April

via cdn2.sbnation.com

We’ve received official word from Canon that April is now the month photo professionals will be able to get their hands on its latest flagship DSLR, the EOS-1D X. The company had originally aimed to have the full-frame 18.1-megapixel camera — complete with three processors and a 51,200 max native ISO — in shops by March, but Canon admitted to Amateur Photographer that “development delays” would push it to late April. We were mighty impressed with the EOS-1D X when we first held the camera back in October, and it’s fair to say those with deep enough pockets for the $ 6,800 (body-only) asking price have an all-around powerhouse of a DSLR headed their way just a couple months from now. Need a refresher on the specifications for the…
