Hasselblad discounts several pro cameras, still a lot more than your average Canon

Hasselblad discounts several pro cameras, still a lot more than your average Canon

via cdn3.sbnation.com

Hasselblad — the maker of professional grade, medium-format cameras — has reduced the pricing of its H series cameras in an effort to appeal to a larger audience of creative professionals. The camera maker is discounting the H4D-31 and the H4D-60 by approximately 20 percent, which puts them at $ 11,995 and $ 30,995, respectively. Both have medium-format sensors, but the H4D-31 clocks in at 31-megapixels and the H4D-60 comes in at a whopping 60 megapixels

Hasselblad is also dropping the price of a few other models as well, like the H4D-50, H4D-50MS, H4D200-MS, and the CFV-50. Make no mistake, the company’s “reduced” pricing still puts this gear firmly outside the reach of mere mortals. If you’re a professional photographer, though —…

Developers begin bringing ‘Magic Lantern’ firmware to Canon 5D Mark III

Developers begin bringing ‘Magic Lantern’ firmware to Canon 5D Mark III

Photo

The developers of Canon hacked firmware “Magic Lantern” have begun porting the custom software to the 5D Mark III. Earlier today, Alex Dumitrache of the “Magic Lantern firmware development” group posted the image above of the 5D Mark III displaying a rudimentary “Hello, World!” string. This might seem insignificant, but it indicates that Canon hasn’t taken drastic measures to prevent the firmware from being modified. The Magic Lantern Team has brought the custom firmware to the 5D Mark II, the T2i, and many other models.

The firmware is targeted at film makers, unlocking a variety of options and settings that Canon holds back right out of the box, like adjustable audio levels instead of an automatic gain control. However, photographers…

Canon plays down 5D Mark III light leak issue, will provide free camera ‘inspections’

Canon plays down 5D Mark III light leak issue, will provide free camera ‘inspections’

Gallery Photo: Canon EOS 5D Mark III hands-on photos

Canon has completed its promised investigation into the light leak issue reportedly plaguing the new 5D Mark III. Some users have complained that keeping the top LCD panel’s backlight on can affect the automatic exposure in low light situations, but the company has found that while the displayed exposure value may indeed be affected, the actual captured image itself will not. In short, your camera should still be exposing pictures correctly, but you might need to be confident of your settings — the screen may not be giving you trustworthy information.

We’re not convinced that this will prove satisfactory to Canon’s customers, however, and if you’re convinced that your hardware is faulty the company is offering to perform inspections…

Canon EOS C500 and EOS-1D C: hands-on with Canon’s newest 4K cameras

Canon EOS C500 and EOS-1D C: hands-on with Canon’s newest 4K cameras

Gallery Photo:

NAB is all about the best of the best in camera technology, and Canon kicked off this year’s show with a bang. The company crowded a theater with industry professionals, press, and just lovers of cinema, and showed off its new EOS C500 and EOS-1D C, the 4K cameras the company launched this week.

The cameras themselves aren’t huge departures from cameras we’ve seen before. The 1D C looks a lot like the 1D X, but rather than a still camera that shoots great video, this is most assuredly a video-first camera. It shoots 4K video at 24 frames per second, and can output uncompressed 1080p footage as well. It’s a very light and mobile camera, at least considering its competition, and the sample we saw — a short called “The Ticket” that was…

Canon admits 5D Mark III backlight can confuse light sensor, is working on ‘countermeasures’

Canon admits 5D Mark III backlight can confuse light sensor, is working on ‘countermeasures’

Gallery Photo: Canon EOS 5D Mark III hands-on photos

See the top LCD panel on that gorgeous new Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera above? Early adopters say that light can leak through that spot and confuse the camera’s Automatic Exposure (AE) sensor… and Canon isn’t disagreeing with them. In fact, the company has admitted the issue today. “In extremely dark environments, if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change as a result of the AE sensor’s detection of light from the LCD panel,” a Canon product advisory reads.

Before you consider returning your $ 3,500 investment, though, or canceling your pre-order, you should know that this won’t be an issue for all shooters — only those that shoot in low light, and with that backlight turned on. In normal scenes, the…

Canon EOS 60Da lets you shoot the night sky with its modified IR filter

Canon EOS 60Da lets you shoot the night sky with its modified IR filter

canon 60da

Canon has announced the EOS 60Da DSLR, a modified version of its 60D exclusively designed for astrophotography. The camera uses an infrared filter that triples the transmission of light at the Hydrogen Alpha line wavelength, allowing for photographs of “red hydrogen emission” phenomena like the Horsehead and Rosette nebulae. Normal IR filters are tuned for the human eye, but block out wavelengths that many astral objects emit light along — while the 60Da’s filter fixes this, Canon doesn’t recommend its use for standard photography as your images will have a reddish color balance.

Elsewhere, it looks to be the same 18-megapixel 60D, maintaining the normal ISO range of up to 6400. The company claims the screen is improved for stargazing,…

Real-world Canon 5D Mark III image and video samples show off ISO improvements

Real-world Canon 5D Mark III image and video samples show off ISO improvements

Gallery Photo: Canon EOS 5D Mark III hands-on photos

Now that the Canon 5D Mark III is officially on sale, various publications are putting the camera through its paces, and we’re getting a glimpse at what it can do in the wild. Easily the most impressive upgrade to the 22-megapixel shooter is improved noise reduction during HD video recording. Vimeo user Saika has a great video comparison showing how much cleaner clips from the Mark III are compared to the Mark II. Canon claims its new sensor and DIGIC 5+ processor offers significant improvements over the previous model when it comes to shooting high-ISO video, and we’re certainly seeing a marked improvement in this comparison. We have a feeling a lot of 5D Mark II videographers are going to want to make the upgrade for the noise…

Canon EOS 5D Mark III kit with 24-105 F/4 L lens available at B&H, Adorama

If you’ve been waiting for the high-end Canon EOS 5D Mark III full-frame DSLR to hit stores, now might be your chance. We haven’t been able to find the $ 3,499 camera body alone in stock anywhere, but both B&H and Adorama have the Mark III kit — which includes an EF 24-105mm F/4 L lens — on sale for $ 4,299. Adorama says it’s only got a few left, but B&H expects to not sell out for a day or two, so you stand a good chance of getting a camera from at least one of them. Free shipping is available for both kits. You can also check out our first impressions of the Mark III here.

93-year-old lens hacked onto a Canon 5D Mark II with amazing results

93-year-old lens hacked onto a Canon 5D Mark II with amazing results

jason bognacki 5d

Three things we generally enjoy here at The Verge: great photography, vintage gadgets, and hacking things together. Which is why we’re kind of in love with what director Jason Bognacki has created. Curious as to whether a 1919 Contessa-Nettel Piccolette folding camera he had lying around would still produce images, Bognacki set out to find a way to test nearly century-old device. While you can still get type 127 film — the Piccolette’s required stock — we’re unsure whether his particular camera was still functional enough to advance a few frames. But that doesn’t really matter, because Bognacki decided to add a modern touch by finding a way to attach the retro camera to the mount of his Canon 5D Mark II. The lens-camera-camera combo…

Canon to hold cinema-centric event in Las Vegas on April 15th, 4K camera on the way?

Canon event invitation las vegas 2012

Well, what do we have here. Canon has sent us an invitation to an April 15th event in Las Vegas that seems sure to be about the company’s professional EOS Movies camera line — especially since the invite is reminiscent of the one we received for the unveil of the Canon Cinema EOS C300 camera last year. It’s also a good time for the company to show off its cinema chops as plenty of movie-types will be in Vegas for the National Association of Broadcasters Show that week. There’s no telling precisely what Canon has in store, though we suspect it may be more info on that 4K-capable EOS DSLR prototype we saw last year. While we’d love to see some new hardware, the invite says that it’s a “very exclusive screening,” so maybe we’ll just being…
