Research In Motion’s latest BlackBerry 7 devices has=ve been granted Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC). Android and iOS regain market share in January as BlackBerry slides

Android and iOS regain market share in January as BlackBerry slides

Google’s Android platform and Apple’s iOS regained mobile operating system market share last month after both mobile platforms curiously showed declines in December. Analytics firm Net Applications on Wednesday released mobile phone and tablet operating system share data for January 2012, and the new numbers suggest that Android showed the biggest gains last month. Google’s mobile OS remained in the No.3 spot while rising to an 18.12% share from 16.15% in December, while Apple’s iOS rose to 53.65% from 52.10% a month earlier. RIM’s BlackBerry OS showed gains in December but the platform’s OS share fell to 2.59% in January, its lowest point since October 2011. Java ME retained its No.2 position despite sliding to 19.19% from 21.27% last month,

BlackBerry London shows up again with fresher design

BlackBerry London shows up again with fresher design

We first saw the BlackBerry London make it way onto the internet a few months back, though I reported that the version that would come to market would look a bit different, and not so Porsche-designed by Porsche Design. CrackBerry got a hold of an internal slide with, surprise, a refreshed BlackBerry London, what will be RIM’s first BlackBerry 10 smartphone due to launch this fall. Read

BlackBerry users are older and wealthier than average smartphone users, study suggests

BlackBerry users are older and wealthier than average smartphone users, study suggests

BlackBerry owners tend to be older and wealthier than other smartphone users according to a new report released this week. Data from comScore Data Mine suggests BlackBerry users are “more likely to have a household greater than $ 75,000 when compared to average smartphone owners.” BlackBerry owners were also more likely to have at least part of all of their monthly mobile bill paid for by their employers. We’re not surprised, taking into consideration the vast number of enterprise users that still own a BlackBerry for work. “BlackBerry users over indexed in all age segments 35-64 in November 2011, with the 55-64 age bracket showing the highest index of 120,” comScore said in its report, which found the fewest number of

Sprint has updated the company’s end-of-life list to include two of its tablets. Shipments of the carrier’s BlackBerry Playbook and HTC EVO View 4G will come to a halt and supplies will run down within the coming weeks, according to the EOL list obtained by SprintFeed. Both tablets will be phased out by the end of of January, possibly leading to the announcement of an LTE tablet from the Overland Park-based company. At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Sprint announced two new LTE-powered smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper, which will launch some time this spring. The company is looking to roll out its 4G LTE network by mid-2012 in select locations.  Read

Apple’s iOS and BlackBerry most popular mobile platforms among IT pros

Apple’s iOS operating system is the most popular mobile platform among corporate workers according to a survey from Check Point Software. The firm polled over 700 IT professionals and found that iOS accounts for 30% of usage, with RIM’s BlackBerry platform just behind at 29%. Check Point Software found that 71% of mobile devices have contributed to increased security incidents. Google’s Android operating system was considered to produce the greatest security risk, however, 72% of polled users claimed careless employees were a greater security threat than hackers. iPhone, iPad owners see glass half full while BlackBerry users are down in the dumps

iPhone, iPad owners see glass half full while BlackBerry users are down in the dumps

In what is certainly one of the most bizarre mobile-related studies we’ve seen published in recent months, a new survey found that iPhone and iPad owners are generally very optimistic relative to owners of other handsets and tablets. The most pessimistic mobile users, according to the same survey, are BlackBerry owners. Consumer electronics recycler and reseller Gazelle recently published the findings of a survey conducted on the CES show floor that sought to establish a correlation between a person’s outlook on life and the mobile devices he or she carries. The firm’s findings, while anything but scientific, paint an interesting picture that suggests users of iOS and Android devices have a better outlook on life than BlackBerry users. Read on for more.
