Touchscreen iMac could be in the works according to Apple patent

Apple certainly helped shape the mobile space by popularizing multitouch screens on smartphones and tablets, but can it do the same for desktop computing, too? The United States Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday published an Apple patent application that describes a desktop computer — likely the iMac — with a touchscreen display. Dell, HP and plenty of other firms have introduced all-in-one PCs with touchscreens, of course, but Apple’s invention may make some applications more intuitive. Read on for more. According to Patently Apple, Apple’s patent describes a series of hybrid knob and slider controls that could be used, for example, in a music application for controlling input levels. “The visual augmentation could include displaying an outline and/or fill

The patent, which was filed only three months ago, builds upon the functionality of the Nike+ iPod system, which allows a user to complete his or her workout and then upload and share the results with others. Apple’s solution, however, would allow users to share live data with other iOS users. Read on for more. Rumors of a February Apple event debunked

Apple has no plans to hold a media event in February according to a new report. Loop Insight’s well-connected Jim Dalrymple on Thursday debunked part of a rumor that began circulating early Thursday morning. The original report claimed Apple had plans to hold an “unusual” media event some time this month that would not be product related, and then its highly anticipated iPad 3 would be unveiled at a separate event in early March. While Apple’s plans for the iPad 3 may or may not align with Macotakara’s report, Apple will not be holding any type of media event this month according to Dalrymple. “This is not going to happen, according to my sources,” he wrote in a blog post. “Apple

His formal duties at Apple remain unclear — Burrowes’s profile only states that his role involves “App Store Marketing” — but the executive’s background suggests gaming will be a strong focus. Apple has hired a number of executives with experience in the gaming market recently, including Nintendo’s former head of public relations Robert Saunders and former Activision, EA and Xbox PR head Nick Grange. iPad 3 to be announced in March following ‘unusual’ Apple event this month

Apple is planning to unveil its next-generation iPad 3 at a media event in early March and it will launch the new tablet later that month, Japanese blog Macotakara reported on Thursday. Prior to that press conference, however, Apple is said to be planning a separate “unusual” media event in early February. The subject of Apple’s supposed February event is unknown, however Macotakara states that it will not be product-focused. The iPad 3 is widely expected to feature a slightly thicker case than its predecessor to accommodate an upgraded high-definition display and a larger battery pack that will reportedly double the battery life of the iPad 2. BGR published evidence on Wednesday that Apple’s next-generation iPad will also feature a quad-core

Apple taking NFC payments mainstream with iPhone 5

Apple taking NFC payments mainstream with iPhone 5

Ed McLaughlin, MasterCard’s head of emerging payments, sat down with Austin Carr of Fast Company to discuss the future of credit cards. “We’re rapidly moving to a world beyond plastic,” said McLaughlin. “In many ways, plastic is just convenient packaging.” The future of on-the-go payments may lie in the hands of near-field communication but unfortunately, adoption and availability have been extremely slow and limited. While NFC technology has been featured in a number of Android devices, MasterCard seems to think it won’t go mainstream until an iPhone is equipped with the mobile payment solution. Read on for more. “The timeline is always as rapid as it makes sense for consumers,” McLaughlin said. “That’s a combination of having a critical mass
