Verizon says global capabilities coming to select Android handsets this summer

Verizon Adding Global Capabilities

Verizon Wireless on Monday confirmed that the DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX, HTC Rezound, and DROID 4 will receive global roaming capabilities later this summer, enabling the handsets to access voice and data services in more than 200 countries, Droid-Life reported. “Customers will see a notification on their device when the software update is available for their device,” a Verizon spokesperson said. “After the software update, customers will be able to take their smartphone overseas and use voice service in more than 220 countries and receive data in more than 205 countries.” While the carrier didn’t give a specific timeline, there is a possibility the update may be included with the smartphone’s upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich updates, which are also slated for a summer release.

Facebook App Center to offer ‘Send to Mobile’ installs for iOS and Android

Facebook send to mobile

As Facebook counts down the days to the opening of its new App Center, it is spotlighting another piece of functionality that it intends to include: easy installs. The App Center, if you don’t recall, will be a centralized place where Facebook will allow users to browse (and install) apps that utilize Facebook connect – including HTML5, iOS, and Android apps. Today the company announced that iOS and Android users can expect a streamlined app install and launch experience on App Center.

When browsing from a phone, you’ll see options to directly launch an app if you have it installed, or a link to install it if you don’t. The latter will open up the App Store on iOS or Google Play on Android. A slightly more interesting variation comes…

Amazon Appstore now allows Android users to Test Drive apps

Amazon Appstore Test Drvie

The Amazon Appstore was updated on Monday to include the company’s popular Test Drive feature on Android devices. The retail giant previously allowed users to test apps using desktop browsers prior to purchasing them, but now trials can be tested on devices. “Today we begin the beta rollout of Test Drive on Android phones,” Amazon said. “Now customers can instantly try apps on their phone — where a majority of app purchases take place — without downloading or installing anything.” The Test Drive feature is currently available on more than 5,000 apps and is compatible with select Android handsets, however Amazon promises the feature will be rolled out to “many more” devices in the coming months.

Motorola won’t update DROID 3, DROID X2 to Android 4

Motorola won’t update DROID 3, DROID X2 to Android 4

Motorola DROID 3 DROID X2 Updates

Motorola recently updated its Android release timeline and revealed that certain devices will remain on Android 2.3 rather than receiving an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The handsets in question are both modern and more than capable of running the latest Android operating system, however the vendor claims the latest software won’t “improve” the devices, and that’s why updates will not be released. Both the DROID 3 and DROID X2 will remain on Android 2.3, despite the fact that both handsets run dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors and were released not even a year ago.

Motorola: if Android 4.0 won’t improve a device, we won’t upgrade it

Motorola Droid RAXR maxx logo (1020)

When Motorola updated its Ice Cream Sandwich timeline, some users were upset that the Droid 3 and X2 would forever remain on Android 2.3. In response, Motorola has detailed its process for deciding whether or not a given phone or tablet will be getting an upgrade. “We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update,” it said in a statement. “And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done — well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.”

A more detailed Ice Cream Sandwich page shows users a four-step Android upgrade process, but while it does give a sense of what each phase means, it doesn’t elaborate much on what Motorola thinks…

China approves Google’s Motorola buy, demands Android remain open

China approves Google’s Motorola buy, demands Android remain open

Google Motorola Acquisition Approved

The United States Department of Justice approved Google’s $ 12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility this past February, but the massive deal awaited the blessing of one more major regulatory body before it could go through. This past weekend, China’s Ministry of Commerce followed the DOJ’s lead and granted Google permission to acquire the struggling vendor. China’s MOC did have a condition Google must honor if it moves forward with the deal, however: Android must remain open-source and freely available. Google announced last August that it intended to acquire Motorola Mobility for $ 12.5 billion, and the deal is expected to close in the coming months.
