MechWarrior Tactics, the upcoming turn-based strategy game by Acronym Games and Roadhouse Interactive set in the BattleTech universe is entering a “friends and family” closed beta program on May 22.

Those that register on the game’s forums will receive a beta key “sometime after” May 22, according to an official post on said forums. As of now, it has yet to be determined if you are expected to play the game with friends and family, or ignore them.

In Star Drill you only have one goal: to grab as many diamonds as you can before you die. It’s a kamikaze mission to be sure, but it’s no less addictive because of it. It’s yet another excellent game from the most recent Ludum Dare competition, and it plays sort of like a sci-fi version of Dig Dug. You play as a tiny spaceship burrowing your way through planets in order to harvest diamonds, but along the way you’ll need to avoid incoming projectiles, lava explosions, and even explosive charges buried beneath the surface. A QA tester at TT Games (Lego Harry Potter, Lego Star Wars, et al.) has tweeted an image of a Wii U tablet that appears to have undergone a redesign since we saw one out in the wild during last year’s E3, saying that the unit

Most importantly, the concave 3DS-esque circle pads have been replaced with Wii-style analog sticks. The Wii U logo has been moved to the bottom left-hand side of the unit, while the plus and minus buttons have been moved to the right. Two mysterious button-ish indentations exist below the d-pad and between the power button and battery life indicator; their function, if any, remains unclear. Update: Well that didn’t take long! The tweet in question has been removed, but a screenshot of said tweet has been safely ensconced after the break.

Additionally, eagle-eyed commenter Anthony noticed a couple more disparities between this unit and those seen at E3, namely that the Home button appears to be surrounded by an Xbox 360-style ring light, and that the tablet’s edges look more dramatically beveled than previously seen. We’ve also noticed that the gates surrounding the analog sticks are circular, rather than octagonal, as seen on the Wii Nunchuk and Classic Controller.

Getting to speak with Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of Lost and screenwriter of Prometheus, was undoubtably an On The Verge highlight. EA Sports Canada recently announced the feature set for NHL 13, which is due for release on September 11 in North America and September 14 in Europe on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Among the more noteworthy features listed are the additions of “True Performance Skating” and “EA Sports Hockey I.Q.”

True Performance Skating is the latest in EA Sports’ apparent efforts to introduce physics-based engines to player movement. Much like FIFA 12‘s Player Impact Engine, True Performance Skating promises to deliver the “explosiveness, momentum and top end speed displayed by today’s NHL players,” while utilizing over a thousand new player animations. The result, according to the team, should allow for more realistic and creative player movement.

NHL 13 also features EA Sports Hockey I.Q., and unfortunately it isn’t a sports-themed quiz show. EA Sports elaborated on the shortcomings of the computer A.I. in last year’s game, saying that “players were only aware of skaters in their immediate proximity and goalies could only react to the player in control of the puck.” EA Sports Hockey I.Q. is expected to encourage, you guessed it, more intelligent decisions by computer-controlled players, who will now “read the whole ice.”

The series’ Be a GM mode, traditionally a single-player feature, will allow players to pit their teams against one another in a full 30-team online league in NHL 13. EA Sports Canada says there will be a “companion mobile app” for players to connect to their online leagues as well.

EA Sports also listed details on collector’s edition versions of the game, which mostly includes Hockey Ultimate Team card packs. Both the standard and collector’s editions of the game are available to pre-order now from the Origin store.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and the Associated Press, Google had to agree to keep Android free and available for anyone to use for at least the next five years in order to gain China’s approval to purchase Motorola Mobility. There’s no more information given on the exact reason for this request, but it seems likely that it was included to allay fears that Google would give Motorola preferential treatment compared to other Android manufacturers. This stipulation removes the possibility of Google closing off Android to other OEMs — though its worth noting that Google has never given any indication that it was considering such a move.
