Chrome passes Internet Explorer to become world’s most popular browser

Google Chrome Market Share

Google’s Chrome Web browser has continued to gain market share since its introduction in 2008. Despite surpassing Internet Explorer in select regions and on weekends, Google’s browser has never been able to dethrone Microsoft in global usage share. According to new numbers from StatCounter, however, Google’s browser has finally averaged higher traffic than Internet Explorer for the first time over a full seven-day stretch. From May 14th through May 20th, the Internet giant’s Web browser garnered a 32.76% share, ahead of Microsoft’s 31.94% and Mozilla Firefox’s 25.47% share. At the start of this week, however, Chrome’s share began to slide, falling to 31.88%, just ahead of Internet Explorer’s 31.47% share.

Hulu looks to take on Netflix with new original shows

Hulu looks to take on Netflix with new original shows

Hulu Original Shows

Hulu on Monday announced 10 original and exclusive TV shows that will premiere this summer, including one from writer-director-actor Kevin Smith. Smith, known for the cult classic Clerks and numerous other films, will host a half-hour movie “revue” for movie lovers, which will be available on Hulu and Hulu Plus beginning June 4th. “I have always wanted to do a show that provides an open forum for real fans to discuss real movies in real time and that’s what ‘Spoilers’ is about. As a filmmaker and lover of movies, I understand that ultimately it’s the fans who make the film. So in this show, we do not review movies, we revere them,” said Smith. In August, Hulu will launch a travel series called “Up To Speed” from filmmaker Richard Linklater, and in the same month, the company will premiere “an edgy male comedy” called “We Got Next.” The streaming website will also carry seven TV shows that have never been available before in the U.S., including “Rev.,” “The Yard,” “Pramface,” “Derren Brown: Inside Your Mind,” “The Promise” and “Little Mosque,” along with the second season of the sci-fi thriller, “The Booth at the End.” Hulu’s press release follows below.

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Proving that summer doesn’t have to mean the start of rerun season, Hulu today announced a full slate of new original and exclusive TV shows that begin premiering on June 4th on Hulu and the Hulu Plus subscription service. Hulu’s summer lineup offers new TV shows for all kinds of entertainment fans, from comedy, sci-fi, travel, reality and even a little magic. For a preview of the upcoming programming, visit www.hulu.com/hulu-summer-series.

The summer slate announcement kicks off with “Spoilers,” a half-hour movie “revue” for movie lovers hosted by beloved filmmaker and podcasting maven Kevin Smith (“Clerks,” “Red State”). “Spoilers” launches on Hulu and Hulu Plus on June 4th.

“I have always wanted to do a show that provides an open forum for real fans to discuss real movies in real time and that’s what ‘Spoilers’ is about. As a filmmaker and lover of movies, I understand that ultimately it’s the fans who make the film. So in this show, we do not review movies, we revere them,” said Kevin Smith. “Hulu really lends itself well to a show like this because they have an audience that is passionate and active when it comes to shows they love. And frankly, those are the people I want to hang with.”

In August, Hulu will launch the highly anticipated travel series “Up To Speed” by acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater (“Bernie,” “School of Rock,” “Dazed and Confused”) and starring Speed Levitch (“The Cruise”). August also brings the premiere of “We Got Next,” an edgy male comedy co-created by Kenya Barris (co-creator of “America’s Next Top Model”) and Hale Rothstein (writer, producer of “The Game”).

Hulu exclusively offers fans seven popular TV shows never before available to U.S. audiences with the premieres of “Rev.,” “The Yard,” “Pramface,” “Derren Brown: Inside Your Mind,” “The Promise” and “Little Mosque,” along with the second season of the sci-fi thriller, “The Booth at the End.”

“In an on-demand world, viewers are going to actively choose to watch TV shows that they really love. At Hulu, we want to offer exclusive shows and make original TV programming that speaks to a passionate group of fans. Because today, you don’t have to settle for watching something mildly entertaining,” said Andy Forssell, senior vice president of content for Hulu. “We are proud of our summer line-up of Hulu Original Series and Exclusives, and we look forward to delighting our users.”

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon comes to Facebook [video]

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon comes to Facebook [video]

Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Facebook

Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site, is filled with a large selection of social and casual games, such as Draw Something, Words With Friends and FarmVille. While the topic of Facebook gaming is widely discussed, there isn’t much there in the way of titles that would attract the hardcore gaming crowd. Ubisoft is looking to change that, however, with the release of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Commander. The game, unlike its console counterpart, is not a first-person shooter but instead a 2D game with an overhead viewpoint that contains both social and more complex aspects. Players are given the option to invite and team up with their Facebook friends to form alliances and complete a variety of missions. The Facebook game is also integrated with “Ghost Recon Future Soldier” on consoles, allowing players to unlock characters, experience points and currency that can be used in both games. Ghost Recon Commander is available now on Facebook, and Ubisoft’s trailer follows below.

Motorola layoffs imminent after Google buyout, report claims

Motorola Layoffs 2012

Following China’s recent regulatory approval, Google’s $ 12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility is expected to close in the next two days. Motorola employees may not be celebrating, however. TechCrunch reported on Monday that layoffs will be hitting the manufacturer imminently. When Google purchased DoubleClick, the company had 1,600 employees, 40% of that which were laid off following the buyout. At the time Google’s acquisition was announced, Motorola Mobility had 19,000 employees. The struggling vendor has already laid off 800 employees as part of a restructuring plan, and now it looks like the company may be forced to go through another round of job cuts.

CableWiFi to offer more than 50,000 free access points to cable subscribers

CableWiFi to offer more than 50,000 free access points to cable subscribers

CableWifi Hotspots

Five major U.S. cable companies have teamed up to offer more than 50,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots to subscribers. The service will be known as “CableWiFi,” and will be offered to customers of Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable. The service initially launched in New York City and central Florida earlier May, and is set to expand to other markets in the coming months. “This effort adds great value to our high speed Internet customers by providing free wireless Internet access on all of their WiFi enabled devices in our markets and additional areas across the country,” said Nomi Bergman, President of Bright House Networks. The joint press release follows below.

Major U.S. Cable Companies Join Forces on WiFi

Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable Will Share Access to over 50,000 Hotspots, Expand WiFi Availability and Simplify Access for their High Speed Internet Customers

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable today announce that they will enable each other’s high-speed Internet customers to access their metro WiFi networks, totaling over 50,000 hotspots. To simplify access, a new network name, “CableWiFi”, has been created for subscribers to use when accessing the WiFi hotspots outside their home market. The first implementation is already complete as Bright House Networks and Cablevision launched “CableWiFi” alongside their branded WiFi networks in the New York City area and central Florida earlier this month. Over the next few months, the “CableWiFi” network name will be added by each of the cable companies to their branded WiFi hotspots.

“This effort adds great value to our high speed Internet customers by providing free wireless Internet access on all of their WiFi enabled devices in our markets and additional areas across the country,” said Nomi Bergman, President of Bright House Networks.

“We believe that WiFi is a superior approach to mobile data, and that cable providers are best positioned to build the highest-capacity national network offering customers fast and reliable Internet connections when away from their home or business broadband service,” said Kristin Dolan, Cablevision’s senior executive vice president of product management and marketing. “We’ve built an extensive WiFi network in our own service area, and see real value and potential in other leading providers joining with us to extend that connectivity to major markets across the country.”

Dave Watson, Chief Operating Officer of Comcast Cable added, “Mobility is an increasingly important part of our Xfinity services product roadmap. WiFi technology, coupled with our agreements with Verizon Wireless, are two significant ways we are executing on our strategy to deliver the best in- and out-of-home communications experience for our customers.”

“The way customers are using our service continues to evolve,” said Jill Campbell, Cox Communications COO. “This is a new area of opportunity that we need to explore.”

“We have long been the leading providers of high-speed internet services in our customers’ homes. Through our rollout of WiFi and the benefits of this collaboration we greatly increase the value and reach of our high-speed internet service, providing access to broadband outside the home and in cities across the country,” said Rob Marcus, President and COO of Time Warner Cable.

When traveling outside their home markets, high-speed Internet subscribers of the participating companies will look for the “CableWiFi” network and through a simple sign-on process connect using the same credentials as when accessing their providers’ WiFi networks. In the coming months, users will be able to have their devices auto-connect to the Internet when located in any of the “Cable WiFi” hotspots.

The participating cable operators currently offer more than 50,000 WiFi hotspots located in New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area, Los Angeles, Tampa, Orlando, and Philadelphia. The operators plan to continue to grow the number of WiFi hotspots and expand into several additional cities. The network has both indoor and outdoor WiFi hotspots located in popular, high traffic locations, such as shopping districts, cafes, malls, arenas, restaurants, parks and beaches. Subscribers will be able to find the nearest WiFi hotspots by visiting the WiFi homepage of their current cable provider or going to www.cablewifi.com.

This is the largest and most inclusive WiFi sharing effort among cable operators to date. In early 2010, Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable entered into an agreement allowing their customers in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Connecticut to access WiFi hotspots offered by each operator in these areas.

Europe gives Google one last chance to end antitrust investigation

Europe gives Google one last chance to end antitrust investigation

Google Antitrust Investigation Europe

European Union antitrust regulators launched an investigation into Google’s search practices in November 2010 after rivals accused the company of promoting its own services ahead of theirs. EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia on Monday said regulators and Google were not looking at a lengthy proceeding, and if the Internet giant could meet certain demands, the antitrust investigation could be brought to a close, Reuters reported. “Google has repeatedly expressed to me its willingness to discuss any concerns that the Commission might have without having to engage in adversarial proceedings, this is why today I’m giving Google an opportunity to offer remedies to address concerns that we have identified,” Almunia said, adding that he wanted a proposal from Google “in a matter of weeks”. The Commission can fine companies up to 10% of their global turnover for breaching EU rules and in the past has fined both Microsoft and Intel, among others.

‘Copyright cop’ system for U.S. ISPs delayed

‘Copyright cop’ system for U.S. ISPs delayed

Anti-piracy ISP System Delayed

The new “six strikes” anti-piracy policy soon to be implemented by a number of major Internet service providers in the United States will reportedly stumble out of the gate. The policy, which is set to be adopted by Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon, Time Warner Cable and other ISPs, will see action taken against users caught downloading pirated files in six steps, ultimately resulting in bandwidth throttling or even service suspensions. The system responsible for managing the new policy may not be ready on schedule, however, and the targeted launch date of July 12th may slip back as a result.

According to a recent report from TorrentFreak, the newly formed Center for Copyright Information and major U.S. ISPs will not implement the new system on schedule this July. The go-live date for the new policy, which is the result of an agreement struck between major ISPs, the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America, will be pushed back for the second time as the companies involved finalize a number of details.

“The dates mentioned in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) are not hard deadlines but were intended to keep us on track to have the Copyright Alert System up and running as quickly as possible and in the most consumer friendly manner possible,” a CCI spokesperson told TorrentFreak. “We do not intend to launch until we are confident that the program is consumer friendly and able to be implemented in a manner consistent with all of the goals of the MOU. We expect our implementation to begin later this year.”

The group also clarified that while repeated offenses may result in bandwidth throttling and service suspensions for those caught downloading pirated material, no permanent service disconnections will result from this new policy.

3-year-old iPhone 3GS primed for revival

3-year-old iPhone 3GS primed for revival

Apple iPhone 3GS Prepaid

Apple’s iPhone 3GS was unveiled nearly 3 years ago in June 2009, and some found its familiar styling and modest hardware upgrades to be disappointing. The handset went on to be Apple’s best-selling smartphone until its successor launched the following year, and the iPhone 4 would be Apple’s best-selling iPhone until the iPhone 4S launched last year and drove the biggest quarter in Apple’s history. The iPhone 3GS will be 3 years and 3 generations old when Apple’s sixth iPhone is unveiled later this year, but one analyst believes the Cupertino, California based company is ready to breathe new life into the handset.

According to Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek, Apple has signed a deal with a “major global distributor” that will target emerging markets around the globe by making the iPhone 3GS available as a less expensive prepaid phone. The analyst doesn’t provide much detail surrounding the deal in his note to clients, though he does believe the wholesale cost of Apple’s third-generation iPhone will drop from $ 375 to the $ 200 to $ 250 range.

Ever the Apple bull, Jefferies also upped its iPhone estimates for the June quarter while the rest of Wall Street panics and Apple’s stock price tumbles. Misek wrote that firms aren’t properly accounting for iPhone production in Hon Hai’s new Brazil plant, and he believes Apple will build between 28 million and 30 million iPhones this quarter, ahead of the Street’s estimates, which range from 26 million to 28 million units on average.

Some HTC phones released from Customs after Apple patent ploy stalls shipments

Some HTC phones released from Customs after Apple patent ploy stalls shipments

HTC Smartphones Customs

HTC on Sunday announced that some of its smartphones have already been inspected by United States Customs and have been released to carriers. The Taiwan-based vendor hit a roadblock last week when its devices were held up in Customs due to an ongoing legal dispute with Apple. “Each imported HTC model must be reviewed by Customs and will be released once Customs officials have completed the inspection,” the company wrote on its website. “Some models have gone through inspection and been released to our carriers customers. We don’t have the status of each specific device model at this time, but we are working closely with Customs. We remain confident that this issue will be resolved soon.” Earlier reports suggested that HTC is using a custom Android build in the U.S. to dodge the Apple patents in question, which revolve around a “data tapping” functionality.
