Lawsuit outs West and Zampella’s salaries, bonuses at Infinity Ward: Projected $13M bonus in 2010

Former Infinity Ward studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella had projected salaries of $ 420,000 in 2009, with projected bonuses of more than $ 3 million each, emails between Activision bosses in 2009 show.

The spreadsheet lists the expected salaries of the top 20 Infinity Ward employees in 2009 and 2010. The 18 remaining employees — the bulk including software engineers and game designers — had projected salaries between $ 71,500 and $ 173,000. The seven employees under West and Zampella each expected a bonus of $ 603,000, while staffers seeing the lowest percentage of the bonus pool (1.5 percent) had a projected $ 278,000.

In 2010, the year Activision fired West and Zampella, they were each expected to earn $ 437,000, with projected bonuses of $ 13 million each. The rest of the top 20′s projected salaries and bonuses rose accordingly, with salaries between $ 74,000 and $ 180,000, and bonuses ranging from $ 1.4 million to $ 2.5 million.

“If you recently worked on a hit FPS, read this and see how incredibly underpaid you are,” ngmoco general manager Benjamin Cousins tweeted about the documents.

The emails were released into public record in the lawsuit between the Infinity Ward Employee Group and Activision; West and Zampella sued Activision in 2010 claiming they were owed $ 36 million in royalties associated with Modern Warfare 2, after Activision fired them earlier that year. West and Zampella now claim $ 1 billion in damages and the case is set for trial May 29.

Scourge: Outbreak spreads to PSN, XBLA, Mac this summer

Scourge: Outbreak spreads to PSN, XBLA, Mac this summer

Image
Tragnarion Studios, who you may (may!) remember from the DS game Doodle Hex, is working on a futuristic third-person shooter for XBLA, PSN (PS3), and Mac. Yes, those are the correct platforms.

Scourge: Outbreak introduces the “Echo Squad,” a group of mercenaries hired to take out the Nogari Corporation, conveniently located on Nogari Island. Four players can team up to infiltrate the “alien-infested facilities,” locate a double agent, destroy the Nogari, and gain control of the “Ambrosia” power source. Functionally, this means co-op shooting, with story segments coming through as flashbacks from the four separate characters.

Scourge: Outbreak will allow players to stop both the scourge and the outbreak this Q3, “later this summer.”

PSN Tuesday: Sorcery, Doctor Who

PSN Tuesday: Sorcery, Doctor Who

Image
Sorcery arrives on PSN today, allowing players to turn their PlayStation Moves into magic wands that only work within their televisions. It’s joined by Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, about a man who wields a sonic screwdriver, which is basically a magic wand powered by pseudoscience, and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, about people who can toss magic projectiles sans wand.

Both PSOne Classics (Alone in the Dark New Nightmare) and PS2 classics (Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain) are available on PS3 today, along with a mess of old Sega games.

Meanwhile, on Vita, Table Top Tanks provides AR tank battles.

Max Payne 3 has shipped 3 million units since hitting shelves last week, publisher Take-Two Interactive revealed in its FY 2012 financial report.

Take-Two also announced Max Payne 3 is now scheduled with an international PC release date of June 1. Rockstar initially planned to launch Max Payne 3 for North American PCs on Tuesday, May 29, but has pushed that back to meet the standard European launch day of Friday that week. All’s fair in love and gritty, noir-style war.

Dungeon Hearts was made in the back of Devolver Digital’s bus, out early 2013

Dungeon Hearts was made in the back of Devolver Digital’s bus, out early 2013

Devolver Digital has teamed up with Cube Roots to publish the indie puzzle RPG Dungeon Hearts on PC, Mac and mobile in early 2013. Before any of you smart alecks ask: No, it’s not a mashup of Dungeon Defenders and Kingdom Hearts.

Dungeon Hearts features a “nostalgic” blend of classic RPG elements and match-three puzzle mechanics for a “wholly unique experience,” Devolver promises. It has 99 character levels and 16 unique environments, and players will use the matching game to perform powerful attacks in the game’s mystical world.

At GDC in February, Cube Roots founder Chris Pavia got on a bus with Devolver Digital’s Fork Parker as part of the Pitch Fork Parker Project. Pavia pitched Dungeon Hearts, left the bus, and by the end of the night his game was signed.

“The original pitch was for Dungeon Hearts to be a medieval brothel simulator,” Parker said. “I recommended we shift development toward the puzzle/RPG hybrid because medieval brothel simulators just don’t sell anymore.”

Uncharted 1 and 2 discover PSN on June 26

Uncharted 1 and 2 discover PSN on June 26

Nathan Drake’s first two Uncharted adventures will be digitally distributed on the PlayStation Network starting next month. On June 26, both Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Game of the Year Edition will be available in boxless form. Oddly, Sony has announced no price for the digital copies as a set nor individually.

On that note, it should be noted that the Uncharted Greatest Hits Dual Pack, which includes the first two games in the series, is available at retailers and online for a suggested retail price of $ 40.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier review: More than just a soldier

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier review: More than just a soldier

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is a game that, at first glance, may seem like an advertisement for ‘murica’s armed forces circa 20XX. “Sign up. You can rock Pantera in the barracks, blow up helicopters and assassinate evil warlords every day,” I imagined the end credits might read.

But between every clichéd cutscene, showing the four members of Ghost squad swilling beer and talking car engines while they wait for their next mission, are a bounty of excellent gameplay scenarios: VIPs to rescue, things to blow up and stealth missions that require diligent adherence to caution and calculation rather than simply making sure you move slowly and stay out of sight. No two missions in Ghost Recon: Future Soldier are the same, and the diversity in locales and armaments means there’s always something new to see – and shoot.

Take the sounds of Sanctuary with you with the Diablo 3 soundtrack

Take the sounds of Sanctuary with you with the Diablo 3 soundtrack

Here’s the perfect way to keep your excitement going while you wait to get into the Diablo 3 server. The 23-track Diablo 3 soundtrack is now available for download on iTunes for $ 11.99 – a soundtrack that was acclaimed by iTunes reviewer BigJeff71 as “Surprisingly good and not too scary.”

If you’re still waiting to play after those 23 tracks elapse, you can also buy “The Music of Diablo 1996-2011,” a $ 12 anthology of classic tracks, and the Diablo 2 soundtrack.

Entering the Rzhev Meat Grinder in Company of Heroes 2

Entering the Rzhev Meat Grinder in Company of Heroes 2

Image

If seeing Soviet forces engage the Germans in the PC-exclusive Company of Heroes 2 taught me anything, it’s that the war would have be lost if I was at the helm of the world’s defense.

At a pre-E3 event in Los Angeles last week, Vancouver-based developer Relic Entertainment revealed the newest entry to its strategy series. Company of Heroes was a landmark title for the developer, solidifying its presence in the genre with one of the best RTS games ever released, followed by standalone expansions. I sunk hours pushing Jerries back from the brink of world destruction in the original Company of Heroes and it’s expansions, but the newest game seems unrelenting.

3DS sells over 6 million units in Japan

3DS sells over 6 million units in Japan

Image
The 3DS has crossed six million units sold in Japan, according to Enterbrain data reported by Enterbrain-owned magazine Famitsu. The last news about Japanese 3DS sales milestones came when it passed 5 million after less than a year, more quickly than any system to date. The system has sold 17.13 million units worldwide as of March 31.

Regional sales totals are not available for the 3DS’s main competitor system the PlayStation Vita, which was released in Japan about ten months after the 3DS and two months later worldwide. However, the 1.8 million systems sold to date worldwide provide contrast.

The 3DS suffered similarly slow sales in the period before its price drop and holiday releases; as of April of last year, it was at 3.6 million worldwide. Which is slow, even if it is twice the Vita’s current life-to-date total.
